The Man Behind the Desk
Chapter One: The Man Behind the Desk
Layla Greene didn’t believe in fate. But when she stepped onto Blackthorn University’s campus, something in her gut whispered that her life was about to change — and not in a way she could control.
She wasn’t here for romance. Or redemption. She was here to disappear.
At least, that was the plan.
Until she read his name on her course list:
Professor Cole Ashford.
Room B214. Thursdays at 3:00PM.
The name alone sent a strange chill through her. Not fear. Not attraction. Something heavier — like warning and gravity all at once.
Two days later…
She stepped into the lecture hall with fifteen minutes to spare, choosing a seat near the back. The room buzzed with low chatter, shifting notebooks, and the sound of a girl two rows ahead reapplying lipstick.
Then the door opened.
Silence fell like it had been trained to.
He entered.
And the world stilled.
Cole Ashford wasn’t just handsome — he was devastating. Sharp. Composed. The kind of man who didn’t need to speak to command attention. His presence filled the room like smoke, like a story you weren't supposed to read but couldn’t put down.
He wore black. Every line of his body clean and deliberate. No tie. Sleeves rolled. A scar near his wrist, faded but not forgotten. His eyes were storm-gray, unreadable. And when they found her, Layla forgot how to breathe.
He looked at her like he already knew.
Already knew the lie she carried.
Already knew the truth she didn’t.
“Good afternoon,” he said, voice like ice melting in fire. “This class is not about fairy tales or heroes. If that’s what you’re looking for, I suggest you leave.”
No one moved.
“Literature,” he said, “is where monsters tell the truth. And sometimes, the most dangerous ones sit in plain sight.”
He turned to the board and wrote:
MONSTERS WEAR DISGUISES.
Layla didn’t hear anything else after that.
All she could think about was the scar on his wrist. The tension in his jaw. And the strange pull inside her that said:
This man i
s not safe.
And I’m going to let him ruin me anyway.
