THE PLOT
"Mum, I will never forgive Victory". Evelyn reiterated the third time. Her face was filled with tears as she agitated over Victory her supposed best friend's behaviour towards her.
Out of jealousy of Evelyn's intelligence, Victory had purposefully fitted up Evelyn to be involved in an examination malpractice of that term. Her frame up looked so real that the principal never investigated the case and placed Evelyn on suspension.
"Evelyn", Mr Tony called. "I have known you as a student with high self- worth, why did you have to descend too low as to bringing foreign materials into the examination hall?"
"I am innocent sir, I know nothing about that"
"Shut up! You have your handwriting clearly written on the papers, and you stand here to deny the accusation?"
"Actually sir, that was the paper I used to study". Evelyn defended.
"How then did it got into the locker you're sitting on? Why didn't you put it back in your own locker after studying?"
"I did sir, but I don't know how it got into the locker I was sitting on."
"You don't know how it got into the locker, but you know it was in the locker?"
"No sir". Evelyn said amidst tears.
"So why were you opening the locker while exam was going on?"
"I didn't open the locker sir."
"Evelyn!"
"Yes sir".
"Do you mean to tell me that all your classmates were lying against you?"
"God is my witness sir".
"Evelyn, you've proven to be a good liar. You to think I would be stupid to believe your lies? Well, for involving in examination malpractice and also lying to cover up, you've been suspended from continuing this term's examination. And if you would come back to this school next term, you must write a letter of apology and also promising never to indulge in examination malpractice again.
Evelyn burst into tears, she pleased with Mr Tony to have a rethink of his decision, but instead,he sent her out of his office.
Dismissal bell was rang, the students of Holy girls secondary school came out to the assembly ground and stood in their lines. The chapel prefect made the prayers after which the series of anthems were recited. The principal then came up to address the students.
"Good afternoon students"
"Good afternoon sir". The students chorused.
"Today being the second day of the examination, I want to commend those of you that have seriously read your books for the exam". He stopped, took a deep breath and continued. "But for those of you that are depending on malpractice, I promise you that all of you must be fished out one after the other and given your due punishment." He stopped talking and looked around as if he was searching for someone.
"Evelyn". The principal called her out, and she walked out with her face down to the floor. The students began to murmur as she came out.
"Quiet!" Mr Tony shouted as he continued talking. "Evelyn the school senior prefect who was supposed to be an example to other students was caught in an exam malpractice, and her due punishment which is suspension has been given her, so don't think you'll be smarter".
After the principal finished addressing the students, all the students began murmuring. Some murmured in disbelief of what the principal said, while some murmured that she had been a hypocrite.
Evelyn went to Victory to confront her of the accusation, but Victory sighed and walked away from her. The rest of the team burst into laughter.
"Evelyn" Onyinye called.
Evelyn turned and saw Onyinye one of her classmates and stopped to know why she was calling her.
"Why do my own friend and other girls in our class lie against me knowing fully well that I am innocent?" Evelyn asked Onyinye as if she knew she had the answer to her question.
"Victory paid them off"
"But why? How do you know that?"
"I overheard there discussion"
"Then why didn't you come to vindicate me?"
"Victory noticed my presence and threatened to deal with me and my family if I divulged her secret."
"And you agreed to that? So why are you telling me now?" Evelyn asked furiously.
"I'm sorry, I wish I could help you."
"Let me be." Evelyn screamed and ran home in tears.
