“Yeah,” she answered. “Are you?” “I don’t matter right now,” he said. Ani turned to him and gave him a kiss. “You always matter, Cam.” Cam’s insides ached from Ani’s unselfish words. He eased away from her and stared into her eyes. “I’m sorry, Ani. I never meant to pull you into any s**t like this.” “It’s OK. I’m OK. I’m just a little freaked out, I guess.” Jacobs returned with three coffees. He handed one to Ani, then opened the back door and gave one to Cam. “They’re all black one sugar, the way I like it. You don’t like ’em, you don’t have to drink ’em,” he said, slamming the door after he got back in. “Thank you,” Ani said. “You’re welcome,” Jacobs replied, lifting the top off his cup and sipping it, reacting to its heat with a squint.
