Ani bit on her bottom lip and gazed down at her mother’s hand as it held her in a death grip. “Please, Mom. Just for a minute. I might never get to see him again. Please,” she pleaded, yanking her arm away from her mother. “I need to see him.”
Francine’s cheek twitched mildly as she pulled in a deep breath. She knew that Ani loved Cameron, but she also sensed a lack of respect from her daughter in the rebellious manoeuvre she had pulled the night before. “I’m sorry, Ani. We’re going home.”

Francine wanted Ani to stay home from school the next day to get some much needed rest but Ani insisted on going. It wasn’t an insatiable desire for education that prompted her decision, but a plan on somehow getting to see Cam one last time before they took him away to God only knew where.
