Prologue
Third person POV: We have Freda
The sight of blood made Liam nauseous; how ironic coming from a Werewolf. He grumbled under his breath, the wails and screams of patient wasn’t a good mix with his heightened sense of hearing. The smell of antiseptic was heavy in the air he could almost taste it on his tongue.
He tapped his feet restlessly as he listened to the Nurse with a frown etched on his handsome face. You must be wondering why a werewolf was at a human hospital; William Canon was a pack warrior from the Blood moon pack. He wasn’t the best neither was he the worst, his life came spiraling down after he declared Lucy the Alpha’s daughter as his mate six years ago at her 18th birthday party.
He had known she was his mate for a while now since he was a few months older than her, but he wanted her to be of age before he declared it.
He could barely hold it in. When the day of her birthday came around, he was on border patrol duty, he tried to maneuver it but the Delta denied him. He was pissed, after waiting for months he still had to wait extra hours before he could finally call her his and stop all the other unmated males from eyeing her.
Seamus his wolf had been restless all day as he watched the border with lack of interest.
Few hours before his shift ended the worst happened. Lucy was gone, it was like a bad joke. He panicked when he heard the news, he expected Alpha Kane to be on a rampage along with his son Alexander but they were surprisingly calm. Rumors flew around about how she ran away with the Beta’s son who was also missing, he was furious, the thought of them together left his mouth with a bitter aftertaste.
He felt betrayed and he knew he had to ask the Alpha instead of jumping into conclusions. He finally gathered the balls to confront Alpha Kane with the issue but to his surprise it wasn’t the reaction he expected. The man he once admired turned to the devil before his eyes, the Alpha was clearly disappointed by the moon goddess’s match for his daughter and laughed in Liam’s face.
He left the office more heartbroken than angry, weeks passed and Lucy was found but she wasn’t alone. No one was surprised when she and Raymond, the beta’s son walked in together; hand in hand. Liam felt like a fool when she finally confronted him, she had know about their mate bond for about a month now. She was disappointed by the moon goddess’s match for her, she would cry all night about how unfair it was for her to end up with a nobody like him and eventually her parents found out and orchestrated a plan where Lucy and Raymond will secretly mate before she rejects him.
Liam laughed sadistically as she told her story with lack of empathy and took the rejection with pride even when all he wanted to do was scream. After two weeks it was no longer bearable being around the new found mates, so he packed his bags and left the pack never looking back.
Ever since then he lived in the human world as a lone wolf till he met his wife Rachel. Rachel might not have been his chosen mate but she was his lover, his forever, in his heart she was his one true mate.
And that was how he landed in this godforsaken hospital.
He had received a call about an hour ago that his wife was about to put to birth, he hadn’t expected it to be today, it was far too early for her to put to birth. A normal pregnancy was nine months but a wolf pregnancy was three months and Rachel hasn’t reached the full three months, he hasn’t prayed in six years but as he rushed to his wife’s assigned room he couldn’t help but utter silent prayer to the moon goddess.
He could hear her wails and screams as he got closer to the room. He wasn’t allowed inside for the time being but Rachel was made aware that he was around and he heard her release a sigh of relief at the news, his lips curling into a smile as he watched her from the window.
‘She can do it!’ He encouraged but for unknown reason Seamus was quiet. Seamus hadn’t felt the best since he left the pack, being a lone wolf was hard for him but either way he liked Rachel and that was enough to make him forget about other things. Today, he had blocked himself away from Liam which was unusual. Liam felt uneasy as time ticked away, minutes turned into hours.
He paced around as he tried to block the sounds out, he would go mad if he kept on hearing her screams and Seamus being unavailable didn’t help his case.
The sound of a baby crying broke his inner turmoils. The door opened and the doctor let him in, he smiled as he saw a pink bundle in Rachel’s arms. A weak smile was on her lips as the nurse said something to her and she looked up at him.
He grinned at her, his heart swelled with pride. This was his family. His.
He took the baby from Rachel’s hands and cooed at the little thing. He looked down at the mother of his child. She looked so weak, something was wrong; maybe it was just the stress of childbirth, she was human and the child was a supernatural, it must have taken a lot of energy.
‘Her name?’ One of the nurses asked.
‘Rachel.’ He said without missing a beat. He wanted her to be named after her mother, like mother like daughter; he thought. But his wife had other plans.
‘Freda.’ Rachel countered.
His heart melted; ‘FREDA’ ‘Peaceful’.
He smiled at the name and concurred.
He looked down at Freda, looking at her peaceful state, the name suited her.
He cooed at her but stopped as he suddenly felt suffocated, his breathe seized along with his heart, he held Freda closer as realization dawned on him; something wasn’t right, his ears caught on to it before the doctors could realize something was wrong; Rachel’s fading heartbeat.
Seamus howled from inside him, the doctors rushing to her side and the nurses leading him out as the sound of Rachel’s declining heartbeat rang in his ears.
Freda was no longer quiet, she wailed and cried as if the peace she felt minutes ago was suddenly robbed from her. The nurses carried her from her lifeless looking father. Liam was in too much shock to move, he couldn’t process it. Everything was happening so fast and all he knew was that Rachel was gone.
He could feel it. Seamus could feel it; he hadn’t stop howling in pain.
When the doctors came out from the room bearing the bad news, all he could do was weep.
He wept for Rachel and how she wouldn’t be here to see their daughter grow. He wept for his daughter’s loss and how she would never know her mother. He wept for his loss. He wept for how cruel the moon goddess had been.
All his hope and joy lost in one day; ‘lie’ Seamus released along with a pained growl. ‘We have Freda.’ He encouraged.
‘We have Freda’. He concurred quietly, shaking his head as he wept. ‘She gave him Freda’. He couldn’t help but smile through the pain.
