Chapter 1

Leah POV: I continue to stare at the email from the council hoping that if I stared at it long enough the words would change. Of course that’s bullshit and nothing changes as I continue to stare.   Alpha Giametti, Due to the grave news of recent events, the council has decided that it is imperative to hold a meeting of all the packs within the region. Due to your pack’s strength and security procedures, as well as your central location within the region, Crescent Moon has been selected to host the gathering. It will be held in two weeks time on May 15th. More details as well as an RSVP list will follow shortly. The council appreciates your dedicated service to your pack as well as to the council.  Respectfully, Councilman Graves “Ah f**k,” I mutter as I rub my temples trying to stop the headache that is beginning to form. Of course they selected my pack to host this meeting. All of the bullshit about my location and security is just that, bullshit. They’re just using it as an excuse to spy on my pack.  Resigning myself to the fact that in two weeks I will be hosting the ranked members of the 52 wolf packs located in North East America, plus Goddess knows how many Council members, I decided to mindlink my Beta, Brett. He was able to handle these kinds of things much better than I was.  Hey Brett, can you come up to my office when you get a chance?  About three seconds later, he mindlinked back, Of course, Leah. I’ll be there in five minutes. Is everything ok? Yeah, it’s fine. I’ll explain when you get here. Realizing I should inform my Gamma of what’s going on too, I added, Grab Gabe too. I may as well tell both of you at the same time. No problem Leah, we’ll be there in a few. As pissed as I was, I knew the meeting itself was a good idea. Things were beginning to get out of hand, and we needed to work together and come up with a solid plan. Typically all of the wolf packs in the region did their own thing. As long as we stayed off each other’s territory and didn’t cause problems with each other, we all basically left each other alone.  But, in the last six months things have begun to change. Wolves started to go missing from all packs from the area. At first, it was so sporadic it was impossible to tell there was a pattern, but as time went on, more and more wolves disappeared. Not one of the 52 packs in the region had come away unscathed. In the last month alone, 15 young wolves went missing among the packs. They all fell into a certain pattern too. They were all 18 or 19 and just recently had their first shift. They were also all unmated and either warriors or junior warriors still in training. My own pack was not immune to this. We’ve had three wolves go missing over the last 6 months. Currently, there were 103 wolves who were taken.  And recently, it has only gotten worse. Not only have the kidnappings increased, but now there have been attacks on a few packs in the area as well. The most recent attack was on the Full Moon pack, and it was reported that one of their warriors recognized some of their missing members among the attackers. So if it was to be believed, not only are our wolves being kidnapped, but they were also somehow being manipulated into turning on their own packs and attacking them. It only made sense the council wanted to have a meeting, I just wished it wasn’t on my territory.  The familiar scents of my Beta and Gamma hit me from out in the hallway. Before they could knock I call out, “Come in!” My Beta, Brett Michaelson, and my Gamma Gabriel Ruiz opened the door and walked into my office. “You know Lee, just once you can allow us to knock first, at least let us pretend that you don’t hear us coming from a mile away,” Gabe said as he spread out on the black leather couch against the wall. He kicked his long tan legs up onto the coffee table while placing his hands behind his head and leaning against the couch. “You know my dad is rolling in his grave every time you put your dirty boots on that custom made table right?”  I meant it as a joke, but I could immediately see the guilt in Gabe’s eyes as he quickly brought his feet to the ground and sat up a little straighter. “Sorry Leah.” I shrugged it off. It didn’t bother me too much. But it was my dad’s favorite piece of furniture when this used to be his office, and I could never bring myself to remove it. Rolling his eyes at his best friend, Brett came and sat in the chair across from my desk. “Is everything ok Leah? What did you need to see us for?” Sighing, I turned my laptop around to allow him to read the email. Gabe stood up and stood behind Brett, reading over his shoulder. “Those little fuckers,” Gabe muttered, “All those excuses are just bullshit. They want to spy on us. They think the pack run by a girl and a queer can’t possibly be doing as well as we are and they want to catch us in a lie or some s**t. These kidnappings were just a good excuse.” I couldn’t help but laugh as Brett just shook his head. “Those were my exact thoughts Gabe, but there’s not much we can do about it. It’s not like I can turn the council down. And they are right, this situation is getting out of control. We do need to meet.” Ever since I took over as Alpha four years ago, after my dad’s death when I was 19, the Council, as well as some other Alpha’s in the area, had been looking for an excuse to get me out of power. It wasn’t against the laws to have a female Alpha, but it was almost unheard of.  The few times it ever happened, the female married or found their mate and allowed them to take over. But I absolutely refused to give up my pack. My father raised me to be Alpha and to take care of this pack and I was doing a damn good job. No way was I going to give up my birth right and legacy just because I had a v****a. If that wasn’t bad enough, two years ago Gabe found his mate, and it became public knowledge that he was gay. While our pack had accepted both of us and were loyal, many others did not feel the same way. I knew some of the council members, as well as some of the older Alpha’s were stuck in the old ways. They didn’t understand how our pack could possibly be growing and flourishing under our leadership and were convinced we were cheating somehow. Well let them look. We had nothing to hide. Brett sighed, rubbing his hands through his blonde hair. The three of us have been best friends since we were kids and have gone through everything together. Brett is the practical one out of us though. And the organized one. He knew the majority of the planning for the meeting would fall to him and Gabe’s mate, Logan. “Well, Leah’s right, There is nothing we can do about it. So we just have to make sure when the sexist and homophobic fuckers get here, they find nothing they can scrutinize. And we make sure they stay focused on the task at hand, which is stopping the kidnappings, finding these missing kids, and finding out whoever is creating an army with them.” I bark out a laugh. “Oh, is that all Brett? This meeting will be a piece of cake.”  Brett shrugged. “Well we have to start somewhere. Everyone is beginning to get restless. A lot of the parents aren’t even letting their pups roam anymore.” “I know,” I replied. It had been the biggest point of concern for my pack recently. Even though it seemed only wolves who have already shifted, and therefore at least 18, were being targeted, parents were understandably worried about their young pups. And despite our excellent security and well trained warriors, I really didn’t have many comforting things to tell them right now. Gabe leaned back in his chair. “I wonder how many marriage proposals you’ll get?” Gabe asked, chuckling. My wolf, Sienna, growled. She hated when anybody mentioned or proposed an alliance marriage to me. She was waiting for her mate, and would not settle for anything less. Me? I was terrified. While I loved the idea of meeting my fated mate and having what Gabe has, I was scared my mate would try to take over my pack, or not be happy that I had all these extra responsibilities and could not be the perfect mate for them. Sienna growled again. We would be their perfect mate. We are meant for only them. And mate will not try to take over our pack. He will be there to support  us.  I hope you’re right. I replied back even though I’m doubtful. I had yet to see a man willing to take the Luna role. I turn back to the guys. "Ok we need to prepare. We will have a pack meeting tomorrow night and delegate responsibilities. Gabe, can you have Logan work with the Omega’s and make sure we have enough space for everyone? The council members and the packs we already have alliances with can stay in the pack house. The rest, we will have to make sure we have cottages available. Hopefully the council will send us the head count within a few days.” I continue working with Brett and Gabe laying out a basic plan for the possibility of having 153 high ranking wolves staying on our territory, though most packs will probably only have the Alpha and Beta come.  As much as I hated the idea of having all of these people on my land, I was hoping these two weeks flew by. The quicker this stupid meeting was over, the better.
