Leah POV
Despite my overall annoyance at the council for forcing this meeting on us, preparation went pretty smoothly, and it was now the day before all the packs were expected to arrive. I walked the grounds with Logan, Gabe’s mate, and our Gamma male as he went over everything with me.
When the Moon Goddess blessed Gabe with Logan as a mate, not only was he the best thing for Gabe, but he was the best thing for the pack as well. His organizational skills and attention to detail made him perfect for this role. While Brett handled security, Logan made sure there was adequate housing and enough food for everybody that will be staying with us.
“Keep a record of how much this is costing us Logan,” I tell him as we walk through the village where the majority of the Alphas and Betas will be staying. “I fully intend to bill the council for all of the extra expenses this is costing us.”
Logan laughed as he ran his hands through his blond hair. He was the opposite of Gabe in both personality and looks. While Gabe is tall and dark with Hispanic features, Logan has blonde hair and blue eyes and was only two inches taller than my 5’8 frame. “Oh, I already made a spreadsheet, Alpha, and fully intend to have them printed out and on the table in front of every council member’s chair.”
I rolled my eyes at the use of my title. I had told him numerous times to call me Leah, but Logan refused unless we were just hanging out as friends. If we were doing anything pertaining to the pack, he insisted on calling me Alpha. “You’re spending too much time with Gabe,” I replied laughing, “you’re becoming petty as hell.”
“Damn right I’m being petty. I would never do anything to harm our pack or bring shame to it, but be forewarned, if any of the fuckers come after Gabe or me because of our relationship or sexuality, best believe the claws are coming out. Literally,” he added as his wolf’s claws pierced through the skin of his knuckles for emphasis.
“They’ll have to get through me first.”
Logan smiled, and draped his arm around my shoulders. “Oh believe me I know, Alpha. I would never want to f**k with you.”
“Good,” I reply as I glance down at my notebook. “Ok the housing looks good. What about the warriors they’ll be bringing?”
“We have tents set up on the training grounds. This should only be for two days, so they'll be fine.”
“That’s perfect. Send me the housing assignments. I’ll get them out to the Alphas so they know where to go tomorrow. Do you mind being at the gate tomorrow with whoever is on duty? You can keep track of the guest list and make sure everyone can find their accommodations.”
Logan nodded, “Of course Alpha. Anything you need”
“Thank You. We couldn’t do this without you. Gabe is a lucky man.”
“Oh believe me, he knows.” I laugh at my Gamma’s mate as we make our way back to the pack house. I had complete faith in all my guys doing everything they could to make sure this event runs smoothly. We did everything we could. Now we just had to get through the next couple days and then hopefully we would never have to deal with these other packs again.
Silas POV:
“Hey, Si, the warriors are all set, we’re ready to go whenever you are,” my Beta and best friend Garrett Johnson said as he slammed my office door open without so much as a f*****g courtesy knock. My Gamma, and other best friend, Liam, followed behind him.
I grunt at Garett giving him a dirty look, “You know it’s customary to knock on a closed door before entering? Not f*****g break it down.”
Garrett shrugged, completely unbothered. He and Liam are the only two people I would ever let talk to me like that, and they both took advantage of it. “You should lock it then. You knew we were coming up. We need to leave.”
I leaned back in my office chair, scrubbing my face with my hands. I hated leaving my pack for any length of time, even if it’s only a few days. I especially hated leaving them without both their Alpha and Beta when pups were getting f*****g snatched right off our territory.
Don’t get me wrong, I knew Liam could handle running the pack for a few days. He was tough as s**t under that quiet demeanor. And he was damn good at his job. But still, I was an Alpha. I was used to being in charge and hated giving up that control. Even to Liam.
Sighing, I stood up from my chair. “Gar, you doubled the warriors around the border while we're gone? What about at the pack house? Liam will be the only guy in the house I don’t want to leave the ladies unprotected-”
The deep growl coming from Liam let me know I f****d up immediately, “I’m going to stop you right there,” he spit out, his eyes turning dark as his wolf, Kane tried to fight to come to the surface, “I may not be the big strong Alpha that you are, Si. Or the badass warrior that Garrett is, but I’m not some weak pathetic human either. I can and will protect my own. I would gladly die before I let anything happen to either Chelsea or Jessica,” he said referring to Garrett’s newly found mate Chelsea, and his own mate of five years Jessica, “Or any pack member. And if you don’t think I’m capable of protecting them, then maybe I shouldn’t be your Gamma.”
Fuck. I screwed this up bad. “Liam, look at me,” I repy when he turned away. Reluctantly he turned around and I could see his eyes were already back to his regular green. Good. “Listen man, I’m sorry. That came out the wrong way. I know how good of a fighter you are. I know you would lay your life down to protect any member of your pack. I wasn’t doubting your abilities. I trust you with my life, and if I ever found my mate, I’d trust you with her life as well. I’m just on edge between these f*****g kidnappings and this meeting. There is no one else in the world I’d rather be my Gamma than you.”
Liam visibly relaxed and gave me a small smile. “No worries, Si, I get it. Any time you gotta meet with the Council you’re always an asshole anyway.”
Liam shrugged and sat down on the brown suede couch in the corner of my office. I grinned. We were good. Garret barked out a laugh, “You got that right. He is always an asshole when meeting the council.”
I rolled my eyes, “You’re lucky you two are my best friends and it’s a pain in the ass to find a new Beta and Gamma, otherwise I’d kick your ass. But you’re right. Ever since what they did to my mom, meeting with them has me on high alert. Top it off with leaving my property so soon after those pups went missing, my nerves are shot.”
Ok, so they weren’t technically pups, since both wolves had turned 18 the week before and had their first shift. But still, it was only two weeks ago when the twins Bennett and Beckett were taken right off my f*****g territory while running in their wolf form. The border guards saw nothing, the security cameras saw nothing. Our trackers last found their scent right outside our border, and we haven’t seen or smelled any sign of them since. They were our first wolves taken from my pack since all of this s**t started, and it was hitting us all hard.
Garrett sighed, “I get it man. I don’t like it anymore than you. I hate leaving Chelsea alone too. This will be our first time apart since we met.”
Liam and I rolled our eyes at each other. Garrett was the biggest playboy you ever met. f*****g a different girl almost every night since we were teenagers. I’m no virgin, but the guy was insane. Liam and I were sure a girl would show up one day pregnant with his pup. But then, a month ago he met his fated mate, Chelsea, and the guy did a complete 180.
Now, he was a f*****g lovesick puppy dog. He was completely and utterly obsessed and doting to her. Liam was a devoted mate to his girl Jessica, but Garrett took it to another level. I was happy for the guy of course, but it kind of made me want to puke.
As much as I loved Chelsea and Jessica, like little sisters, and was completely happy for my best friends, it sucked being the only one unmated. I was like the fifth wheel. It never bothered me much that I was 26 and still hadn’t met my mate, until Garrett finally met his. Now it was all I could think about. And my wolf Kingston wasn’t making it any better either. He was f*****g desperate to be settled with his mate.
“Alright,” I told the guys as I headed out of the room, “Let’s get the f**k out of here before I make an excuse and bail.”
The guys followed me downstairs and out of the pack house. Jessica and Chelsea were sitting on the front porch waiting for us. In the driveway were two black SUV’s and six of our warriors standing by them, just waiting for us. When we came out, the warriors all straightened up, and our head trainer Nick walked up to us. He gave us a respectful nod, slightly baring his neck as a sign of submission, “Good morning, Alpha. Beta, Gamma,” he said nodding towards Garret and Liam, “the warriors are ready to go whenever you are Alpha. I also double checked on all of the patrols and the extra security Beta Garrett ordered. We’re good to go.”
“Great, thanks Nick. Give us a few minutes and we’ll be ready to go. These love birds need to say their goodbyes.” Nick chuckled quietly as his gaze found Garrett, who already had Chelsea in his arms and the two of them were unashamedly making out like they were in their bedroom and not in front of the f*****g pack.
“No problem, Alpha,” Nick replied before making his way back to the SUV’s and beginning to bark orders. We have one of the strongest packs and toughest warriors in the country, and the training and leadership from Nick is one of the reasons why.
I walk over so that I’m standing only a foot away from Garrett and Chelsea, my arms crossed over my chest and my eyebrow raised, waiting. Neither even noticed my presence. After a minute I clear my throat. They pulled apart, embarrassed. Both of them were darker skinned and I had no idea it was possible for either of them to turn so red. But they did.
“You have an audience,” I replied sternly even though I was laughing on the inside. But still, Garrett was the f*****g Beta, he should have some damn control. Looking over at the warriors who were all staring with an amused face, Chelsea blushed even more and then gave me an embarrassed grin.
“Sorry, Silas. It’s our first time away from each other. We got a little carried away.” I laughed and brought Chelsea into a hug goodbye. I heard Garrett growl from behind her and I fixed a gaze at him. He immediately stopped. He knew damn well I saw both Chelsea and Jessica as my little sisters and would never do anything inappropriate with either of them. Plus, best friend or not I was still his Alpha. He doesn’t get to f*****g growl at me.
Chelsea just rolled her eyes at her mate and hugged me tighter causing Garrett to stiffen and the two of us to laugh. “Be good Silas,” she said to me, “Look after Garrett for me, will you?”
“Of course Chels, I always do.”
I gave her a friendly kiss on the forehead and then brought Jessica into a goodbye hug. These girls meant as much to me as their mates did. “Bye Silas,” she said laughing, “Don’t worry about the pack. Liam and I will take care of everything.”
“I know, Jessie. I trust you two.”
Jessica hugged Garrett goodbye as I said a quick goodbye to Liam. “Call or link if you need anything. If there’s any trouble at all let me know immediately.”
Liam rolled his eyes, “I got this Silas. Go. Take care of this. This meeting is important. We’ll be fine here. I will call or link if I need you. If you don’t hear from me, it means we’re fine.” I got his point. Don’t micromanage me from afar. Easier said than done.
“Alright Si, let’s get the hell out here.”
Nodding in agreement, I followed Garrett into the first SUV and one of the warriors, Jackson, got in the front seat to drive. Nick sat in the passenger seat while Gar and I were in the back. The other 4 warriors we were taking with us filed into the other SUV, and we finally started the four hour drive to Crescent Moon’s territory.
