Chapter 1
Rebecca woke up in the early morning. She used the restroom, brushed her teeth, washed her face and started breakfast. She quickly dressed in a pair of cutoff jean shorts, a white cotton blouse, and a pair of brown sandals.
Bell still fast asleep Becca sneaks in and begins singing, “wake up flower,” Bell’s beautiful chocolate brown eyes spring open, a smile on her face. “Good Morning momma I had the best dream ever about unicorns and mermaids,” Becca interrupts, “I want to hear all about it while you get ready for our day.” Bell happily told her recount of last nights dream while Becca listed intently both excited for the days adventure.
Once morning chores were finished Becca gathered their beach bag, towels, picnic lunch and placed it in the back of their yellow Jeep Wrangler. Bell was following behind with her best friend Shmelly. “Come on Shmelly let’s go to the beach, let’s go” Bell called behind her, touching her hand in the seat next to hers. Shmelly a 5 year old black lab eagerly jumps in next to Bell. B cc’s hops in orange the driver seat and off they go.
“Momma tell me about the mermaids”, Bell asks, “do you mean the mermaids that live in the lake?” Becca asks. “Yes” giggles Bell eagerly listening to the story. “It’s not a story Bell it’s true. Mermaids have lived in this lake for 100’s of years.” Becca continues on with the story as they drive Bell hanging on her mothers every word. After2 hours of driving they stop in the redwoods for a picnic lunch. This was their favorite place to stop on their way to the beach cottage. She immediately is drawn to the lush green grass. Her eyes are then drawn to the redwood trees that stood taller than any house nearby. As she walks into the forest holding Bella’s hand Shmelly quick in tow she hears the familiar sound of a the familiar stream. Their pace quickening as they get closer to the water. As they approach they take off their shoes as Becca’s feet touch the cool mountain water she feels her heart rate slow and her body relax. “Not to far from me” she calls out to Bell as she sits on a rock near the stream. Allowing herself a few moments to soak in this moment she closes her eyes and listens to the sounds enveloping her.
Something suddenly feels out of place. She calls out, “Bell, you’re to far from mommy, Shmelly come now” commanding her pup back to her knowing Bell would be with her. “We’re right here momma, come over here I met a new friend”. As she approached the scene unfolding before her. The large familiar meadow filled with wild flowers and several small animals surrounding her sweet daughter. “You got too far from momma baby, let’s go back and have our picnic, ok baby girl”, she tells Bell. “Momma you didn’t meet my new friend”, Bell turns and points to the dark haired beauty standing next to her. “Her name is Sarah, she was showing me how to talk to animals. She says you can do it too”. Sarah looks at Becca with a smile on her face. Becca turns to Bell, “why don’t you take Shmelly and your new animal friends and start having some lunch I will be there in a moment I need to talk to your new friend. “Ok momma” beams Bell with a big smile “come on Shmelly”. As she runs back towards the stream. Becca turns to Sarah not missing the look of surprise on her face.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Asks Becca “I could ask you the same thing” Sarah reply’s. “I have successfully started a life away from all of this free of werewolves and magic and anything else that lives in my past. I am raising her to be a normal little girl”. Rebecca was just getting started. “You came back home Rebecca, and you have a daughter?” Sarah says in awe of Rebecca. “It’s merely a lunch stop on the way to the beach cottage, think nothing of it, forget you saw us”. Sarah reaches for Rebecca’s hand, “please don’t go yet. We’d love to have you visit a while or even stay,” Rebecca with tear filled eyes turns to Sarah “I can’t I need to go” she gets back to the picnic and tells Bell, “eat up we have an adventure to get to”.
As Becca, Bell, and Shmelly continued on their journey they played music Becca singing at the top of her life nags when she looks over and notices Bell wasn’t singing. “Why aren’t you singing Bell, everything ok”, Bell looks up, “I’m sad we had to leave Sarah, she was nice and is a lot like you momma. Her voice is calm like yours, her hair is the same color as yours, momma is she your sister?” Becca’s eye grew big as she pulled into the driveway, “We are here”. She immediately jumps out of the car and helps Bell out Shmelly at their side. “How about we unload the car and get things put away, then” she waits for Bell to finish her sentence, “to the beach!” “Yes my love TO THE BEACH”.
The rest of the evening was spent at the Beach, roasting marshmallows over an open fire and watching Bell drift off into the most peaceful of dreams.
After getting Bell tucked in for the night Becca and Shmelly went around the humble cottage picking up from the days adventures. Becca went to the bathroom and turned on the hot water to the stone made a no in tub. Adding some lavender oil and bath salts to help tame her sore muscles. She settles into the tub and stares aimlessly out the bay window to her right contemplating the days events. As she stared blankly into the forest, her old home she thought of Sarah. She hadn’t seen her since she left 12 years prior. When she left it was quick and without notice. She chose to cut ties to her friends and family hoping she wouldn’t continue to hurt them. She was caught up in her thoughts when she noticed something flickering through the trees. She stood up and ran outside quickly shifting into a magnificent rich chocolate colored wolf her eyes stayed their shade of green mimicking the greens of the forest. . She quickly projected a barrier around she and Bell’s temporary home. She then saw him slowly emerge from between the giant redwoods. She never thought she’d see him again and now that she did she was frozen in place her body unable to will itself to move. She watched as he inched closer to her. His black wolf had gotten bigger, more powerful since they last saw one another. His pace first slow and steadily building as he got closer now a fast and steady run. His canines bared his wolf radiating frustration and anger. She braced herself for what was next.
