"I'm not sure there is much to talk about," I look down at my water, my fingers playing with the plastic straw, shying away from his penetrating gaze.
"What about your family? Any siblings?" I look up, but my eyes hold loneliness in them.
"I'm an only child. I've been alone for as long as I can remember. I only have small memories of my parents, when we were in a not-so-good situation," I don't get sad because I don't remember them enough to feel any sad feeling. "What about you?" I ask him before he can comment on my story.
"I never met my parents, no memories of having any. All I remember is growing with people around me. Almost like a feeling I was just born, since the memories, I have felt somewhat made. Not sure," He looked to the side and took a sip of his water.
"You said you like dogs. Do you have any pets?" I try to change the family topic; even though none of us is affected, it's still not comfortable for me to talk about it.
"I actually do. Their names are Alpha and Rex, Rex being 'king' in Latin," He smiles proudly at the name of his dogs.
"Those are some powerful names; I like them. But do their names make justice to their size? I've heard a neighbor say the couple next door had a dog named Zeus, the Greek God. One would think the dog was big and scary, but it wasn't any bigger than a fluff ball," I giggle as I remember seeing the said Zeus walk out of my building and almost getting run over.
"Oh no, they make more than justice to their names. Quite scary dogs, if I'm being honest," He chuckles softly. "Good thing they only listen to me and act like lovesick puppies when I get home."
"What breed are they?" There aren't many dogs in Topia, big dogs that is. People either have small dogs for the company or dog fights. They are skinny and scabby from the lack of food and fights they often get in. The only pretty, well-fed, and behaved dogs I see are in Gaia when I go to school.
"They are actually-"
"Here are your orders," Gav interrupted Ego as he placed our food plates on the table. "Some pecan and cardamom buns and hot chocolate for the lady," He but a bowl with a couple of buns and a smaller one next to it with jelly and butter.
"And a dark chocolate strudel for the gentleman," He placed Ego's plate that came with a ball of vanilla ice cream and his iced coffee. "If you need me, press the button on the side of the table."
"That looks delicious," I pointed to his strudel with my knife.
"It sure does," He grinned. "Do you want to try it?" He gestures the delicious sweet pastry with his fork.
"Umm, if it is okay with you," I reply, unsure. Internally my mouth is watering, and I'm almost taking that strudel for myself. But my exterior is calm and hesitant.
"It's no problem. I wanted you to try anyway," He used his fork to cut a piece and scooped it before handing the fork to me. I gently grabbed it, careful not to touch his hand, then grabbed the piece with my teeth, not knowing if he minds saliva on his fork.
In a second, an explosion of the sweet and bitter chocolate that melted in my mouth hit me with full force. My eyes slightly watered from the heavenly taste I never had the opportunity to experience, even with all the lavished food opportunities I've been having.
"So, did you like it?" I open my eyes, which I didn't notice closing, then quickly wipe them as if something had fallen in them.
"I loved it," I cover my mouth with my hand, afraid there might be some piece left on my teeth. A couple of seconds later, I lowered my hand and smile, not showing my teeth.
"You have- you- there's something on your," Ego the side of his mouth, leaving me confused. "Here, let me help," He stands up and reaches over the table, making me freeze on my seat. His hand cups my cheek as his thumb grazes over the side of my lips. He then sits back in his place and licks his thumb clean from the chocolate previously on the side of my mouth. "There you go," He smirks as he licks his finger clean.
What just happened?!
