"What was that about?" Amhurst asked, as she walked to rinse out our food containers.
"Cuz, just think about it, he works for the council. He was sent here to gather information. I told him what I felt he needed to know, and they ordered him to only tell me what I was allowed to know. They want to keep me calm, but there's a lot more he is keeping from me. I could sense he was apprehensive when he was telling me certain things. Like his whole story of Keenan. That's his best friend. He had to know what was going on with him but wants me to turn against him. It doesn't make sense. The only thing I felt complete honesty with was him sincerely wanting to protect me. If he is going to be a friend, I think I can now formulate a plan."
"And what's that?"
"I needed them to know we are not lovers, so they won't come after you for leverage. We won't be here much longer. I can feel my baby daddy trying to contact me. My pup is moving around like he knows too. Things will be starting soon. The blood my mom snuck in that steak is going to help. I feel like I am just about at full strength. If I siphon the magic from our cuffs, do you think you could do a spell to unlock them?"
"Possibly. That's a complicated spell, and I'm really not that strong of a witch. I am a seer."
"I'm going to help you with your power. I'll siphon the energy from the cuffs and feed it to you. We will just have to wait until this battle begins and do it in a room where there are no cameras."
"Then what? We won't be able to fight our way out of here. I'm not a skilled fighter, and you're in the early stages of labor. What if it triggers your labor?"
"I'm okay right now. I have my strength and don't feel anything besides normal pregnancy discomfort. I just know if I go into labor here, they will take my pup. We'll have to break off whatever spell they're using to track me. I rather take my chances out there. I've been working on my skills as an enchantress. I'm pretty sure I can get my pup's dad to make his witch mate to help with that. I know how to survive in the wild. Plus, I'll have you. Do you like camping?"
"I hate it! Do we have to live in the woods like wolves?"
"Maybe not. I'll probably be able to cloak us once we get out of here and we may be able to disappear in plain sight."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"How comfortable are you with humans?" I asked, intrigued about how she would react.
"Very. I can defiantly do that."
"Good. If we are at the Interspecies Council's Headquarters, we are in New York. There are a lot of supernatural species there. We could suppress our abilities and cloak our appearance and should be able to successfully blend. I can't promise that will be the game plan, but it will be an option. Aaah..Ouch.."
"Lexi, are you okay?"
"My pup. Don't worry, I don't think it's a contraction. Nope, Aah... You see how my pup is moving? They instinctively move when their father is nearby. He's just not in the most ideal position and I think he thinks my kidneys are punching bags. Now back to our plans. My baby daddy went rogue, but his family's pack is not far from where I think we are. His chosen mate is in the coven outside the pack. Once we get out of here, we won't get far if we go west of here, but there is a chance of clearing to the east. There are many means to depart. Hide maybe in the Carribean or the Virgin Islands. Ouch! He's moving more. I think we will need to take cover soon. Your room or mine?"
"I know you're saying the pain is nothing, but I think we should go to yours. I would feel better if you laid down some. I'll just grab the medical supplies from my room and will bag up whatever else they have in yours."
"Why are you getting medical supplies again? It's not going to help with the escape."
"Despite you not wanting to admit it, the doctor said you're in the early stages of labor. I'm taking everything in case something might come in handy."
"Wow. That's so smart of you." I said, but felt there was something she felt guilty about.
"Glad you think so. Now go lie down." She said, ushering me into my room.
I walked into the room, laid down, and turned the TV on the human news channel.
"Sierra, do you see this?"
"Human news? What, do you see magical activity?"
"Well, there is another public shooting of innocent people by a supernatural hunter. They're getting really sloppy. A supermarket this time. Looks like there were many human casualties. I'm glad the authorities have caught the shooter. I was actually talking about the weather. Looking outside, it looks like it's going to be a major storm, right?"
"I see now. The dark clouds are moving towards us, but there is no forecast of rain. The darkness is getting close."
"Very close," I said, looking out at the widow and seeing the darkness approach in the distance.
"Amhurst, what's taking you so long? " I asked, walking across the hall to her room. "Oh dear. Let's get you up." I said, kneeling to lift her off the ground. Looking at her face, I was wondering how she was able to receive visions as part of her magic with binders on her wrist.
"Oh there you go princess. You can't lift her alone. You're pregnant for crying out loud. What, is she epileptic or something?" An elf appeared.
"Oh, great. Who are you? What did we alert the cameras?"
"I'm sure you didn't. I'm not watching the cameras. I was sent here to check on you and remove your cuffs. Is she planning on leaving or something? What's the bag for?" he asked, as he easily put her in his arms and saw me gathering the items she dropped.
"Who are you? Who sent you?"
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. My name is Merwin. Your friend Jacob asked me to check in on you. He sent you books and his mate, Shelly, sent you some maternity clothes. I left it all in a bag in your room. I sensed you were there when I jumped in there."
"Can you carry her to my room? I just came in here when my cousin didn't answer. We were just going to watch a movie. Her bag was just medical supplies she felt might be necessary, you know, just in case I went into labor. She's not a healer or even a strong mage, but she knows I had planned on having a home birth. I wish I could be at MY home with all of my supplies and my mom doing the birthing, but we're planning on making due if we are allowed. Do you think you could help us get more supplies? Maybe some herbs for the bath. I can make a list of what is needed to ease the labor pains." I lied, hoping I could gain his aid.
"I can see what I can do. Let's see what supplies you have already. Okay, I see a stethoscope, some bandages, gloves, alcohol wipes. I don't know why you need these syringes. She has no medicine. You will probably need extra towels and maybe a scalpel, some emergency medicine and items for suture. You never know. Oh, what about one of those plunger things to suck the baby out? Let me talk to the director."
"No, you don't have to bother the director. Would it be okay if you just brought it. The sooner, the better. I have a feeling things are going to happen really quickly. The darkness is almost here." I said, looking at the window.
"Darkness? What darkness.. Oh. Black Magic! I didn't know you could see that from your suite. You don't have to worry about that. The facility is going to go on lockdown. Yes. But don't be afraid no one is going to be able to get to you if you need them to. I do understand your worry now. You don't have to worry about them getting to you. Your suite is impenetrable from the outside. No one is going to be able to harm you, but we may be occupied keeping them out and away from you if you need someone immediately. If it makes you feel better, I'll jump into the clinic area and grab a birthing kit as well as whatever herbs that should be useful for your bath and even see if there are some things that might help with your cousins' epilepsy."
"Thank you. It will make me feel a lot better. Could you do that like, right now? I just want to tend to her and don't want her panicking when she wakes up to see an unknown face." I asked.
"Umm. I guess I can. I'll also see if I can get an update to help ease your nerves."
I thanked him before he disappeared. He left just in time. From behind him, I could see Amhurst stirring. I quickly ran to the bathroom and wet a few towels. One to cover the camera in my room and another to use for Amhurst.
"Lexi, there's a gap. We can get out. We will just have to wait for the third siren," Amhurst whispered.
"That's good news. How are you feeling?" I asked.
"Just a little tired. I'll be ready for whatever may come after a nap."
That made me suspicious. Normally, her visions would have her unconscious for some time.
"How about a booster? We need to get these cuffs off quickly. I'll siphon off of yours and will feed them to you, then I will siphon from my cuffs to charge you. That should be enough to give you that booster you'll need to get out. I know we made plans for later but we need to do this now before the elf comes back. I need to enchant him."
"Elf? What elf?"
"His name is Merwin. My friend Jacob sent him to bring that bag from his mate. Shelly was kinda like a big sister to me at the academy. Anyways, hold my hand. Take a deep breath and allow the energy to enter you. Once you feel strong enough, begin the unlocking spell. I'll slowly feed you the magic from the cuffs. You ready?"
She nodded her head, closed her eyes and took a deep breath. With one hand on her cuffs and the other in her hand, I began siphoning the cuffs and slowly feeding it to her. She gasped when she first felt the surge of energy. I slowly began feeding more energy to her. Slowly she opened her eyes and whispered the spell, but instead of unlocking her cuffs she unlocked mine.
"Okay, not what we planned. How are you feeling?"
"I'm okay. I just don't think I would be strong enough to do both cuffs and escape."She said, again with a surge of guilt.
"It's okay without the cuffs, I can remove yours. Here" I unlocked her cuffs. Then, picking up both cuffs, I grabbed her hand and siphoned more into her. "Do you feel strong now?"
"Yes."
"Good. More supplies are coming. Hopefully, soon the darkness is getting closer."
"Don't worry about that. I told you, you're safe here. Oh, hello. Here's your birthing kit with the items you asked for. I also brought you something to help with your seizures. I know you can't do magic with those...oh no you removed your cuffs.. I have to ..."
"STOP!" I commanded, causing him to stop in his tracks. I walked over and put both hands on his cheek, pushing through some calming pharomones. "It's okay. Look at me. Deep in my eyes. Everything is going to be okay. I'm not going to hurt you unless I have to. Good for you, it looks like I will not need to because I am now inside of your head. Merwin, when the darkness gets here we will be leaving. They are coming to take me because they want to use my pup just like the council, and I am not going to let that happen. You, my dear, are going to cover for me after you jump us out of this room to somewhere we can escape, understand?"
"Yes mistress."
"Good, now I need to have an update on the council's findings. I want to know everything they have on me, my pup, and that darkness. I need to know how they are tracking me?"
"The darkness is assumed to be the Inimicus Clans blood witches. We are using your aura's signature energy. They spelled bound you so that you send off alerts to the council when there is a shift."
"I need someone to reverse the tracking magic." I said to Amhurst. "Please continue. What else do you know about the Inimicus Clan and the Council's plan of defense?" I asked, turning back to Merwin.
Under my compulsion, he told us all that he knew. Once he was done, I sent him to send a cover story about why my cameras were covered so not to alarm anyone.
We had to act normal until it was time. Amhurst and I were brought dinner. We ate, showered, changed and packed all the items given to us, then sat at the window as the dark cloud approached.
