Wilt and Higgs crouched in the shadow of the window and watched the three figures as they entered the alley. The two larger men stopped and turned to the shorter man. He gestured angrily at them. Wilt relaxed his mind and sent his senses out.
‘Be careful, Wilt.’
He’s not here.
But I thought you could lead him.
He must be stronger than we thought. Forget it. Move on. If he’s that developed he can probably hear us even now.
Without our sensing?

Wilt flinched then as a single thought sang out, impossibly loud, as though an entire choir of voices was yelling directly into his ear.
Next time, little thief.
Then all thought was abruptly cut off and Wilt was knocked onto his haunches.
‘Wilt!’ Higgs turned to help him up. But Wilt waved him back, his head spinning.
