Chapter 16: The Dawn of a New Age
Everything went silent.
Aeryn found herself suspended in an endless sea of swirling darkness, the Abyssal Heart surrounding her like a vast, insatiable force. She could feel its hunger, its desire to consume everything. But there was something inside her that burned brighter—something that refused to be swallowed by the dark.
“Aeryn,” a voice called softly, and she turned to see Kaelen, his form glowing with light as he reached out toward her. “You can do this. You have the strength to fight it.”
Aeryn’s heart surged with warmth at the sight of him. “I can’t. I’m not strong enough.”
“You are,” Kaelen said firmly. “You’ve always been. The darkness can’t consume you. It can only feed on your fear. Let go of it.”
Her heart clenched, and for the first time in so long, she realized something she had been too afraid to acknowledge. The darkness was powerful, but it was nothing compared to the light that had always been inside her.
She reached out toward Kaelen, and in that moment, a powerful wave of light burst from her, radiating outward and shattering the darkness around them. The Abyssal Heart screamed, its form writhing in agony as the light enveloped it, breaking it apart piece by piece.
With a final, blinding flash, the Heart was gone. The temple crumbled around them, and the darkness dissipated, leaving only the quiet echo of their breaths.
Aeryn and Kaelen stood together in the ruins, the world slowly beginning to heal once more.
“We did it,” Aeryn whispered, her voice full of exhaustion and relief.
Kaelen smiled, his eyes warm with pride. “Together.”
The storm had passed, and as they stepped into the rising dawn, Aeryn knew that their world was not the same as it once was. But it was alive, and that was enough. They had faced the darkness—and together, they had conquered it.
The future was theirs to build.
