You only lose me once
In a secluded private cemetery, the funeral unfolded with a somber grace. The priest uttered solemn prayers for the departed, accompanied by the mournful wails of a group of black-clad attendees. Among them, an elderly woman, the mother of the deceased, teetered on the edge of fainting from grief. Not too far, yet not too close to the hallowed grave site, stood a tall woman in a black dress. She donned expensive sunglasses, her gaze fixated upon the cemetery with an air of elegance and calmness. In a surprising juxtaposition, she clutched a bouquet of flowers in one hand and a brimming champagne glass in the other. The onlookers were left in suspense, unable to discern whether she bid farewell to the departed or reveled in celebration. As the speaker approached to deliver the eulogy, the enigmatic woman smirked, drained her champagne in a single gulp, and nonchalantly turned away, discarding the glass in a trash bin before departing.
"He can't talk anymore," the woman said to the man over the phone as she settled into the car, instructing the driver to proceed.
Five years prior,
It was a bleak and frigid day, the relentless snowfall showing no mercy. Traffic police, combating the unyielding weather, barricaded the main roads, directing cars away from the treacherous conditions. Some were engrossed in setting up "no entry" signs, while others, shivering in the cold, flagged down vehicles, grumbling about the wretched weather. "Who must be insane to be driving in such weather!" muttered one of them. A taxi driver, facing a roadblock, lowered his window and pleaded with the officer, "We're about to miss our flight. Could you please let us through, just this once?"
With an urgent tone, he turned to Catherine and declared, "Ma'am, time is against us." Catherine swiftly handed him some cash, which he discreetly slipped beneath his ID as he handed it to the officer. The transaction secured their passage, and they raced towards the airport, their journey imbued with the urgency of time slipping away.
