The Day the Strongest Man Died
The strongest man in the world was dying. Kael Ashford stood alone in the ruins of the Imperial Palace, surrounded by fire, broken weapons, and thousands of dead soldiers. Rain poured from the blood-red sky. Yet none of it mattered. His eyes were fixed on the seven people standing before him. Seven warriors. Seven legends. The Seven Thrones of Humanity. They were the strongest warriors in the world. They were also the people Kael had once called his friends. The woman standing at the front slowly raised her sword. Her golden hair was soaked by the rain, and her white armor was covered in dust. "Kael," she said quietly. Kael looked at her. "Why?" She lowered her eyes. "You already know." "No." Kael's voice was tired. "I want to hear you say it." Silence filled the ruined courtyard. Behind them, the sky twisted violently. A gigantic black portal floated above the Imperial Capital. The Abyssal Gate. Monsters had been pouring through it for three days. Cities had fallen. Kingdoms had burned. Millions of people were dead. Kael had fought without rest. He had fought dragons, demons, and creatures that had existed long before humanity. He had protected the world. And now the people he protected had surrounded him. One of the seven warriors stepped forward. "The world cannot survive another Shadow King." Kael laughed bitterly. "Another?" "You call me a monster because I became stronger than you." "You became something worse than a monster." Kael's expression changed. "Worse?" "You became uncontrollable." Kael looked at them one by one. "So that's the truth." He slowly raised his hand. A small crystal floated above his palm. The Heart of Eternity. The most powerful artifact in existence. It contained the original source of time magic. With it, the Abyssal Gate could be sealed. Without it, the world would eventually be destroyed. The woman in white armor stared at the crystal. "Give it to us." Kael smiled. "You don't want the Heart." She said nothing. "You want me to give you the Heart so you can kill me." No one answered. Their silence confirmed everything. Kael looked toward the burning capital. He remembered the first time he had entered those gates. He had been sixteen. A nobody from a forgotten village. He had possessed almost no magical talent. People had laughed at him. They had called him useless. But Kael had refused to accept his fate. He trained. He fought. He entered dangerous ruins. He learned forbidden magic. He survived battles that should have killed him. Eventually, he became the strongest warrior humanity had ever seen. People gave him a name. The Shadow King. He never wanted the title. He only wanted enough strength to protect the people he loved. His grandmother. His friends. Luna. His home. But somewhere along the way, the world began to fear him. Kael looked at the seven warriors again. "Tell me something." His voice became quiet. "Was everything planned?" The woman looked away. Kael understood. The Awakening Ceremony. The strange seal inside his body. The Shadow Temple. The wars. Even the people who had guided him toward becoming stronger. Maybe none of it had been an accident. Maybe someone had been controlling his entire life. His fingers tightened around the Heart of Eternity. "I spent twenty years protecting this world." He looked at the Abyssal Gate. "And this is how it ends." The woman raised her sword. "Kael, please." Kael smiled sadly. "You should have trusted me." He closed his eyes. Then he made his decision. The Heart of Eternity began glowing. The seven warriors realized what he intended. "Stop!" "Kael!" "Don't!" Too late. Kael crushed the crystal. CRACK! A blinding light exploded from his hand. The sky screamed. The Abyssal Gate began collapsing. The seven warriors were thrown backward. Kael fell to his knees. He felt something tear through his body. The Heart of Eternity was not simply an artifact. It was connected to time itself. By destroying it, Kael had broken the boundary between the past and the present. His vision became blurry. He heard voices. He heard screams. He heard the woman calling his name. Then everything disappeared. --- Kael woke up choking. He immediately reached for his sword. Nothing. He opened his eyes. A wooden ceiling stared back at him. He froze. This wasn't the Imperial Palace. There was no fire. No blood. No Abyssal Gate. No Seven Thrones. Kael slowly sat up. His breathing became faster. He looked around the small room. A wooden table. An old bookshelf. A cracked window. A faded blanket. He knew this place. "No..." He jumped out of bed. His legs nearly gave way. He rushed toward a small mirror hanging on the wall. A young boy stared back at him. Black hair. Gray eyes. Smooth skin. No scars. No battle wounds. Kael touched his face. His fingers trembled. "This is..." He looked at his hands. Sixteen-year-old hands. His heart pounded. He knew exactly what had happened. The Heart of Eternity had sent him back. Twenty years into the past. A knock came from the door. "Kael?" His entire body froze. That voice. He knew that voice. The door opened. An elderly woman entered carrying a bowl of soup. Silver hair. Gentle eyes. A warm smile. Kael stared at her. The bowl slipped from her hands. It crashed onto the wooden floor. "Kael?" He couldn't speak. His eyes filled with tears. "Grandma..." She looked confused. "What's wrong?" Kael rushed forward and hugged her. His grandmother froze. For several seconds, neither moved. Then she gently placed her hand on his head. "Did you have a bad dream?" Kael closed his eyes. "Yes." "What did you dream about?" He held her tighter. "Everything." She smiled. "Then forget it." Kael slowly pulled away. He looked at her face. She was alive. In his previous life, she had died when Kael was twenty-four. He had arrived too late to save her. But now he had another chance. This time, he would protect her. No matter what it cost. --- Later that morning, Kael discovered the date. The seventeenth day of the Harvest Moon. Twenty years before his death. The day of the Awakening Ceremony. Kael remembered it clearly. This was the day his life had supposedly gone wrong. The day everyone discovered that he possessed almost no magical talent. The day he became the laughingstock of Graystone Village. But now he knew something they didn't. His power had never been weak. It had been sealed. Someone had deliberately hidden his true potential. Kael stared at his reflection. "Not this time." He had twenty years of memories. He knew where ancient treasures were hidden. He knew which kingdoms would fall. He knew which people would become heroes. He knew which people would betray humanity. Most importantly, he knew the future. But the future could change. His return had already changed it. That meant he couldn't simply follow the path of his previous life. He needed to become stronger. Much stronger. And this time, he would discover the truth before it was too late. --- The village square was crowded by noon. Sixteen-year-old boys and girls stood in a long line around the Awakening Crystal. The ceremony was the most important event in Graystone Village. A powerful awakening could change someone's entire life. Those with high magical talent could enter academies. Some could become knights. Others could become nobles. Kael stood quietly among them. He recognized many faces. Some had once been his friends. Some had become enemies. And some had died before reaching adulthood. At the front of the line stood a girl with long silver hair. Luna Evernight. Kael stared at her for a moment. In his previous life, Luna had eventually become one of the greatest mages in the world. She had also been one of the few people who never feared him. But Kael quickly looked away. He had more important things to worry about. "Kael Ashford!" The village elder called his name. The crowd became quiet. Kael walked toward the Awakening Crystal. Whispers immediately spread. "That's him." "The Ashford boy." "I heard he has no talent." "He's probably going to awaken F-Rank magic." Kael ignored them. He placed his hand against the crystal. For several seconds, nothing happened. Just like before. The villagers began laughing. Then... Crack. A black line appeared across the crystal. The laughter stopped. The elder frowned. "What?" Another c***k appeared. Then another. Black mist began leaking from the crystal. The elder's face turned pale. "Everyone, move away!" BOOM! The Awakening Crystal shattered. A wave of darkness exploded through the square. People screamed. Kael remained standing in the center. The darkness surrounded his body. Then it entered his chest. His vision suddenly went black. A voice echoed inside his mind. "You came back." Kael's eyes widened. "Who are you?" The voice answered. "You failed once." A strange symbol appeared before him. A black crown surrounded by seven stars. "This time..." The voice became colder. "...don't make the same mistake." Kael stared at the symbol. "Tell me who you are." Silence. Then the voice whispered: "The one who remembers your first death." The darkness vanished. Kael dropped to one knee. The village square was completely silent. The elder stared at the shattered crystal. "What kind of power..." Kael slowly stood. He could feel something inside his body. A strange energy. It wasn't the same power he remembered. It was older. Deeper. And somehow... It felt as if it had been waiting for him. Kael touched his chest. A black mark had appeared over his heart. Seven tiny stars surrounded it. His expression became serious. His return was not an accident. Someone had brought him back. Someone knew he had already lived this life once. And that meant there was a secret even Kael didn't know. The village elder finally spoke. "Kael..." Kael looked at him. "I don't know what you are." Kael looked toward the distant mountains. A faint smile appeared on his face. "Neither do I." He turned toward his grandmother. "But I'll find out." She looked at him with concern. Kael walked toward her. "Grandma." "Yes?" "I'm going to become stronger." She smiled. "How strong?" Kael looked toward the sky. He remembered his death. The seven warriors. The Abyssal Gate. The burning capital. His expression hardened. "Strong enough that no one will ever decide my fate again." Far above Graystone Village, seven black stars briefly appeared in the sky. Then they vanished. Deep beneath the earth, inside a sealed chamber, an ancient man opened his eyes. He had been asleep for hundreds of years. "The Shadow Heir..." A second voice echoed from the darkness. "Has he returned?" The ancient man smiled. "Yes." "Should we kill him?" "No." His golden eyes glowed. "Let him grow." "Why?" The ancient man looked toward the surface. "Because sooner or later, the boy will lead us to the one who killed the gods." Back in Graystone Village, Kael knew nothing about the ancient conversation. He only knew one thing. His second life had begun. This time, he would not blindly follow destiny. He would not become someone else's weapon. He would uncover every secret. He would protect the people he loved. And he would become stronger than anyone in the world. Even if he had to challenge kings... Even if he had to fight gods... Even if the entire world stood against him. Kael Ashford would never allow himself to die powerless again. His journey had begun.
