Chapter 1
I held my purse under my arm while I tried so desperately to remove my truck keys out from my back pocket. It’s really late and I am having a really bad feeling that someone is following me. As I was leaving the office I kept hearing footsteps behind me, very heavy and quick footsteps. I turned to try and see who it was but I didn’t see anyone. I didn’t really expect to see anyone since I was the only person working in my office. I am a private investigator for missing persons. People go to me to seek help in finding lost loved ones, and I had just finished a horrible case which left me on edge. As I finally retrieved my keys I quickly opened the truck door and jump into the driver seat, locking the door as soon as it was closed. I had to take a deep breath before starting the engine to my 2005 Ford Expedition. My trusty and very rusty red tuck has gotten me in and out of a lot of trouble over the last fifteen year. When I had bought the truck I fell in love with it within the first few minutes of the test drive. Although it is in way worse shape than when I had purchased it, it still runs like a champ. I had put the truck into drive and left the parking lot with thoughts of my warm bed drifting through my mind. As I started to make a right turn to get onto the highway something speeds past the front of my truck and I have to slam on the breaks, causing me to stop hard. I felt my heart racing as if it is about to jump out of my chest. “Get a grip Mar it was probably just a large bird” I told myself out loud knowing all too well it probably wasn’t. After the last three weeks I have had I would probably believe someone if they had told me that fairies existed. I rushed home as fast as I could while still within the speed limit. As I turned into the driveway of my house I started to feel as though someone was following me again so I took a quick look around to be sure it was safe to open my garage door. Once I knew it was safe I quickly drove into the garage and closed the door before getting out of the truck. As I made my way into the house I felt myself relaxing a little and I soon started to think about taking a nice hot shower and lying in my warm bed. Before that could happen my stomach growled really loud and I knew I needed to eat something or I might starve in my sleep, so I made myself a sandwich and grabbed a bag of chips, I headed for the shower to soak in its warm embrace. After getting dressed, I headed straight for my oversized bed and crawled under the covers. As I laid there trying not to think of what has happened over the last few weeks, I finally find myself slowly drifting off to sleep. **Dream 1: I am walking on clouds, I feel weightless as if I were filled with helium. It is dark though, no moon light to help guide me through the clouds. All I can see is a small dim light very far away. As I start to float closer and closer to the light I can see things more clearly. The small light slowly starts to reveal a man’s figure. “Who are you?” I asked in a low whisper, really hoping I didn’t already know. He looked oddly familiar and yet so strange. He wasn’t looking in my direction, but from the back I could tell he was tall and strong with broad shoulders. He was wearing a dark grey shirt, which hugged him in all the right places, showing off his well defined arms. He is wearing a pair of tight fitting dark colored jeans and no shoes; I could see that his legs were also very strong and well defined, and that ass! It looks as though he was made from stone. I could feel myself getting warm in all the right places, when suddenly he started to turn around and just before I could see his face it all disappeared.** I woke with the sun shining through my curtains. My head was pounding and my body aching as if I had run a marathon in my sleep. I look at my alarm clock and grumble to myself at the fact that it is already noon. I had slept in late, not meaning to, and now I am going to be late for lunch with my friend Jessica. Jessica would understand though, she always does. She has been my best friend since middle school; we are as thick as thieves some might say. We always agreed on everything except on who was prettier; which it is her, whether she believes me or not. Jessica is a few inches taller than me; we both have dirty blonde hair, although hers is so wavy it almost curls. She is very curvy in all the right places, I have plenty of curves to but I unfortunately am a little more filled out around the waist and thighs, and although my breasts are a size bigger, hers are perkier. She has high cheek bones the same as me, but hers compliment her freckled face perfectly. Her eyes are a wonderful piercing light green with a hint of deep forest green around her irises, whereas all I have is plain brown eyes. Our lips are about the same, plump and in the perfect shade of light red. People always get us confused and think we are sisters. Although we do look a lot alike, the truth is, unfortunately we are not. As I get dressed I start to think about the case I had just handled and I can feel my heart pick up speed. Just the thought of what those poor girls went through is horrifying. When we found them there wasn’t much anyone could do for them, physically they were in decent health, but their minds had gone to another place altogether. Ashley and Dana are the sisters who disappeared together about two months ago, by the time I had gotten the case they had been missing for about a month. I traced every step they took for weeks meeting some very scary people who were into some very illegal things, I wanted to call it all in but I needed to earn their trust to find the girls. The things I had seen will forever be burned into my mind, all the blood, drugs and body parts was enough to make the strongest of men run for the hills, but I had to keep going. I would normally have called it off at the first sign of serious trouble, but the family was paying me triple my normal rate and they seemed very desperate to know what had happened to them. I almost lost hope until I finally I had caught a break with a lead that had lead me to find them locked away in what looked to be an underground night club. They had been chained to filthy beds with other girls. I was able to rescue a total of four people that day. My thoughts were racing through all the horrible things I had seen when suddenly there was a knock at my front door and I nearly jumped out of my skin. After collecting my nerves I walked to my front door and looked through the little peep hole to see Jessica standing there with a bright smile from ear to ear. I open the door and she comes rushing in with so much energy it washes the remaining thoughts of the past away. “Oh. My. Gosh! Girl, why are you not ready yet?” she said in a very subtle country twang. “What are you talking about? I am ready” I respond with a gesture towards my outfit. She had the look of disappointment written all over her face before grabbing my arm and practically dragging me back to my closet. “You are not going out like that; you look like a dang librarian in that getup.” She starts going through my closet and when she finds what she was looking for she throws it at me. “Put that on while I go get the makeup ready.” She turned towards the bathroom while I assess the situation. She had handed me the one and only dress I owned, and hadn’t worn in a very long time. It is a cute dress that hugs my upper body, but flows very loosely from the waist down to just above my knee. The colors are amazing in the right lighting; it starts from the top as a very dark blue and fades into a light blue. I put the dress on with amazement that it still fits. She comes back into the room with some makeup and my hairbrush and gets to work. About 20 minutes later she is finally done. “There, now you are ready!” She said as she finishes up with my hair. She kept it all simple with the makeup and hair but when I looked in the mirror I almost didn’t recognize myself. It has been far too long since I dressed up like this. “What’s the occasion?” I asked her, confused as to why we are all dressed up for lunch. “It’s a Secret” she replied with a wink. She grabbed my hand and led me to her car and we took off. We were driving for about an hour just jamming to our favorite music when I got this feeling that someone was following us. I looked behind us and there was no one else on the road, which is weird for this time of day. I turned down the music, “So where are we going?” I asked Jessica trying to steady my voice. “You will see it’s going to be a little bit of a drive though.” She said with a sly smile. She turned the music back up when a good song came on and I tried to push the foreboding feeling aside and sang along with my friend. We drive for another hour or so when we pull up to this nice looking restaurant but by now, it is around dinner time. Before we get out we check our hair and makeup and she turns to me “Okay, so do not get mad at me, but the surprise is kind of a blind date.” As she said this to me I can feel my heart racing and my palms starting to sweat. “Why Jessica, You know I am not into this whole ‘dating’ thing.” She smiled sweetly before continuing. “I know, I know, but I found this guy online and he said to bring a friend along so his brother can have a date as well, he told me a little about his brother and he seems like a perfect fit for you. He stays to himself, works alone, loyal and isn’t into the whole ‘dating’ thing as well.” I looked at her with a blank face, “I don’t stay to myself, I have you.” I defended myself with a smirk. We sat there looking at each other for a few seconds before busting out laughing and agreeing with each other that this guy and I are a lot alike and it has to be too good to be true. I sigh "Fine, I will let you drag me into this date, But be ready for a 'I told you so' when everything burns" I say as we step out of the car. We walk up to the door together and a nice looking man opens it and welcomes us inside. As soon as the door was opened I can smell all the delicious food just emanating from inside. Jessica gave the hostess our table name and we were quickly sat down at a table. I look at the menu and nearly have a heart attack at the prices. I give Jessica a stern look and before I can open my mouth she holds up her hand, “I know what you’re thinking but don’t say it, the guys picked the place and offered to pay for everything.” I quickly shut my mouth, just in time for the waiter to come around and ask us what we would like to drink. We both order the same wine and start talking about anything that comes to mind while we wait for the guys to show up. Jakes P.O.V. We had arrived at the restaurant way to late and my brother Derrick and I hoped the girls hadn’t left already. It took him forever to find someone connected to the one woman we have been looking for. We walk into the building and we are assaulted with the smell of food. As soon as I am able to filter out the smell of the food I am hit with another sense. I can’t find the source but I know there is someone here, someone my brother and I have been looking for, for a very long time. I search the room and don’t see anyone out of place and then I saw her, sitting and laughing with her friend. She isn’t the one I was getting the awful sense from but at that moment nothing else mattered. I couldn’t take my eyes off her *MATE* a very loud voice inside me yells and I want to run to her and wrap my arms around her and never let go. Her friend looks up and starts gawking at my brother and I and that is when she turns around and looks up, her and I lock eyes and the room starts to fade until it seems to be only her and I in the room. She breaks eye contact first when her friend says something to her. My brother and I glance at each other. "That's them." he says and we start walking towards the table they are sitting at. Marlene’s P.O.V. All of the sudden in mid sentence Jessica’s eyes widen and she stops talking. I follow her gaze and find my eyes bulging as well. Two men at the door and they were drop dead gorgeous. The one on the right was tall with jet black hair that was slicked back and a very chiseled jaw line, he was dressed in a very expensive looking dark grey suit and it fit well but it didn’t do much to hide his very obvious muscular frame. With a clean shave and a narrow nose he looked like he was superman from the movies. The man on the left was a few inches shorter with dark brown almost black hair with what looks to be a hint of deep blue that was slicked back in the same fashion as his friend; he was wearing almost the same suit the only difference was the color of his tie. His facial features and muscular build is very similar to his friend which made me believe those two men are actually brothers. Maybe even the ones we came here to meet. I locked eyes with the man on the left and a surge of electricity ran down my spine and butterflies filled my stomach. Everything in the room around me started to fade as we looked into each other’s eyes. Jessica said something and it knocked me out of the trance I was in. I looked away and the room came back into focus. *what the hell was that* I thought to myself. My assumptions were correct; they were both headed in our direction. I was so nervous my heart was racing and my palms were sweaty again. They approached our table with such grace it was almost inhuman. The taller one reached out his hand to Jessica and introduced himself then his brother. “Hello, you must be Jessica. This is my brother Jake I was telling you about.” “Derrick, it’s nice to finally meet you, Jake it’s nice to meet you too. This is my friend Marlene, everyone calls her Mar.” Jessica introduced herself and me with a huge smile on her face. Both the men looked at me and I could feel electricity crawling up my spine as I held my hand out to the two men. “Hello” I barely managed to croak out. I shook Derricks hand first and then Jake’s, as soon as our hands touched there was a tingling sensation at his touch that made me want to wrap my arms around him, I don't know how I managed to stop myself, but it took all of my willpower. We all sat down and ordered some food and more wine. After some brief small talk I felt I bit more comfortable. Every time I looked towards Jake he was staring at me with what to look like deep desire almost as if he would rather devour me instead on the food. Time seemed to have slipped by us and before I knew it dessert was ordered and the wine was getting to me. I had a few more than Jessica and she seemed to be holding it together better than me, I stand to excuse myself to go use the restroom and I stumble. Jake reacted quickly and had his hand out to catch me before I could even blink. The feel of his strong hand on the back of my arm felt so electrifying I almost jumped back. “Th-Thank you” I stammered, “the wine must be getting to me more than I thought.” I said with a shaky voice. “I don’t drink very often, I’m sorry.” The look he had in his eyes had been so full of concern and understanding it surprisingly startled me. “No need to apologize, I’m just glad I was able to save you from a nasty tumble.” I nodded not knowing if my voice would work and started towards the bathroom again. Jessica started to get up “Would you like help to the restroom?” She offered, I looked at her and shook my head. “I should be fine thank you” Jake still had his hand on my arm until this point and when he let go I felt like a piece of me went with him. *What is wrong with me, I hadn’t had that much to drink* I thought as I started towards the bathroom again. As I was about to reach the door to the bathroom I got that feeling again that someone was watching me, I looked around the restaurant and almost missed the guy who seemed so out of place. He was sitting alone at a table with his head down just enough that I couldn’t make out his face. He was wearing a dark red sweat shirt and had the hood pulled up. As I stood there staring at him trying to remember where I had seen him from the bathroom door swung open and smacked me right in the face. All I remember after that was the feeling like I was falling and then nothing. Dream 2: I am in the clouds again. Searching for something but I don’t know what, all I know is I am looking for something important. I don’t see anything around me this time no light, no man, nothing. What am I looking for? I feel around and after what feels like forever I find something on the ground it is almost like a rope or a thick string. I tug on it and one side feels like it is attached to something so I start to follow it. As I am following it I can hear something, or rather someone calling my name in a whispered voice “Marlene…..” It almost sounds like someone telling me to open my eyes but it is mumbled like I am under water. Then I hear it again, but more clear this time “Wake up and open your eyes Marlene”. Then all of the sudden I am falling, and all I see is a bright light.
