Chapter 21

Eli: She flinched. It wasn’t much, just a slight grimace and a blink, but she flinched. I should have expected it, but it still caught me off guard. She looked up at me through the window of my car with large terrified eyes and I had to look away. Look at something else because I couldn’t watch her be afraid of me. I looked around, making sure no one saw. The gun had a silencer, so no one heard. Why hadn’t I checked for witnesses before I shot him? I don’t know I just reacted. I reached down and checked the pulse, there was a chance he was still alive. He wasn’t, his eyes stared up at me like he was alive though. It was unnerving and freaky. I was calm. I had to be calm because I knew Grace was probably freaking out. I walked over to the minivan and opened the back door. There might be clues as to who this guy was. I should have given him more chance to answer but he wasn’t going to. He didn’t care about his own life, just the mission he was on. There was nothing but a small duffle bag in the back, which I grabbed. I then set to work on dragging the man’s body into the back of the van. I glanced over at Grace as I patted the mad down looking for anything. I found a wallet and a pass card of some kind. Perfect, I could use those. I pocket them and started to drag the man back to the van. He wasn’t overweight, he was just older, but not too heavy. I needed to get Grace back to the hotel. They obviously knew where we were going to be and when today. I was wracking my brains for some way they could have found out about this. Nothing came to mind. I pulled out my phone and pressed the number two speed dial. Two rings before someone picked up. “Agency, this is Rachael.” a female voice came over the line. “This is Agent Fisher; I need a body disposal at the campus of Colorado State University.” I said looking around still trying to avoid looking at Graces terrified face. “Description please?” Rachael said. She was very professional. “The body is in a silver minivan, in the athletic fields parking lot. The Licenses plate number is YD-7893.” I read off the license plate number as I placed the man’s duffle in the back seat of my car. “Thank you, Agent Fisher, someone will be there in a moment.” Rachael was starting to sound like a machine. “I would advise using a tow truck, there is an event going on.” I glanced at Izzi on the field. The game had started, and she was playing forward. She caught the ball in her net and passed it to another player moving down the field as she went. Rachael sighed ha! Finally, emotion! “Thank you for the information Agent Fisher, we will send someone shortly.” and with that she hung up. I slipped the phone back in my pocket and went to unlock my door. As I slid inside, I glanced over at Grace, she was looking straight ahead, her eyes still wide, her face still pale. She looked like she was going to be sick. “I’m going to ask d**k to bring the girls back when the game is finished.” I said watching her carefully. She nodded but didn’t say anything. I flipped on the radio and drove across the parking lot in search of d**k and Cammi. When I found them, I honked? d**k motioned for Cammi to stay where she was and came over with my wallet in hand. “Can you bring the girls back to the hotel when the game is over?” I asked after rolling down my window and retrieving my wallet. “What happened?” d**k asked nodding toward Grace who had started shaking. She was probably in some kind of shock. “I’ll explain when you get back this afternoon.” I said with a sigh, I had to get Grace home and I didn’t want her to have to relive everything that just happened even though mentally she probably already was. Dick nodded and turned back toward Izzi’s game. I could always count on him when I had too. I pulled out of the parking lot and started back to the hotel. “Do your sisters know?” Grace’s voice was soft and small I could hardly hear her over the sound of the tires on the pavement. “Know what?” I asked hopping she wouldn’t say what I thought she was going to say. “That you kill people?” she said her voice gained a little bit of volume, but she still wasn’t looking at me. She was looking at her hands. I sighed, “Izzi knows, and Cammi has a general idea that it was part of the job description.” “And your parents?” she asked. I frowned, I never really thought about what my dad would think about this when I took the job. I just knew I needed the job. I needed to get away from my house and my family. I just left. I had been wondering the streets, a 14-year-old kid, pick pocketing, when d**k had found me. He had looked about my age and when he offered me a job and a place to stay, I jumped at the opportunity. What my dad, or my family would have thought never came into question. The money was good. It was enough to get the girls into privet school and to pay for my mom’s move out to Colorado. “My mom knows.” I said simply. “And your dad?” she asked finally looking at me. She didn’t look as terrified as she had before. She looked… sad. Like she pitied me. I sighed and pulled over. I pinched the bridge of my nose between my thumb and my forefinger. “I only kill bad people.” I said slowly, “Mostly I get information, but I only kill people who are going to hurt other people.” It sounded like I was explaining it to a small child. I hadn’t expected this reaction from her. I work for her dad! She’s supposed to know what the job entails. “I know you kill people.” she said quietly a hand on my arm, “I’ve known that from the start, I just didn’t expect to… too see you kill someone.” I looked up at her. Her face was inches from mine, her breath soft against my cheek. “I’m sorry Grace.” I shook my head and closed my eyes, “I didn’t want you to see that either.” I felt her hand on my cheek. “I’m fine.” she smiled a little bit her eyes searching my face, “I’m just a little frightened, that’s all.” “I--” My voice cracked as I watched her eyes, I wondered what color they were. They were probably pretty, maybe a blue or a light green. It was a soft color. I knew that much. “I don’t want to scare you.” I said regaining my voice. “We sound very cheesy right about now Eli Fisher.” She said pulling away and laughing a little bit. I smiled at her comment replaying the moment in my head and realizing she was right. “That we do Grace.” I nodded and pulled back out onto the highway. She seemed relaxed now, even calm. I let out a quiet sigh of relief and made my way to the hotel.
