Chapter 1
Eli:
This was a menial assignment. I understood completely that I was following this stupid little girl around because I screwed up my last assignment but that didn’t mean I didn't feel slighted. It wasn’t really my fault I screwed up and didn’t ‘t kill they guy, you can‘t kill when you have a time limit. But now I was stuck babysitting the boss’s daughter, which was typically something used to train people in the art of stalking. Apparently, she was the most accident-prone person on the planet. Seriously, she was just an i***t! Who the flip goes walking through dark alley ways in the middle of an unknown city? Who walks around in the dark in a strange city? Who jumps in strange cars because someone offered to give you a ride? I wondered if the boss dropped her on her head when she was a baby, or if she was naturally that much of an i***t. She didn’t necessarily act like one of those rich snobby kids that you wanted to strangle. She acted like a four-year-old who honestly didn’t know any better.
I sighed as she nodded to the guy she just stopped to ask for directions. “You know it would just be easier if I showed you myself.” The guy said. Why was it always men? Why couldn’t she ask a girl for directions. Or get a GPS on her phone? I take that back; she had tried to ask a woman for directions and managed to get hopelessly lost in one block. Men were more willing to actually show her the way. I could understand why. When I first started this stupid assignment, I would have happily followed her. She had wide light-colored eyes, thick light hair that went down to her waist, full lips, and a body that I could only imagine replicated that of Aphrodite the Greek goddess of love and beauty. In short, she was hot. Incredibly innocent and naive but still extremely hot! Of course, after two weeks of watching her be an i***t I didn’t care how she looked.
“That would be great!” she said with a smile. She had dimples when she smiled. I sighed and put down my paper. It wasn’t that hard to follow her everywhere. She didn’t pay attention to anything. I had planted a microphone in her purse. So even though I was across the street and far enough away that even if she had brains enough to look around, she wouldn’t know I was following her. She started walking beside the guy. He was short and a little older with an already balding head. He didn’t look like much a threat, but I had shot guys who were a lot like him. They were bad guys because no one suspects them.
The guy leads her down two blocks and turned to the right. I picked up pace and quickly turned the corner. This guy was starting to get on my nerves. He was walking fast. Which she didn’t do very well due to the fact that she was short. He walked her around another corner. And I growled. I hated this city. She was only supposed to stay here for a week but for some reason her dad wanted her to stay here for longer. Couldn’t he have stuck her on a ranch in the middle of nowhere? Where the only trouble she could get into is falling out of an apple tree? Why did he think Denver, Colorado was the best place on earth for her? She was already lost in downtown, and her hotel was clear on the other side of Denver.
Denver wasn’t like New York or any other city really. It was so spread out that walking around the city was nearly impossible. Everything was connected by a highway system that seemed to go over the city instead of through it. There were small train systems in certain parts of the city but other than that you either needed a car or a bus pass. There was no way little princess was taking a bus. I didn’t think she was against it, but her dad was, therefore I was.
Her stupid guide was just supposed to take her to the mall parking lot, but he seemed to be taking the longest possible route.
“Can we stop for a second?” she asked panting, “Or at least slow down?” The guy looked at her briefly.
“I’m sorry,” he said, “I’m just in a hurry.” he put on a smile. I didn’t trust this guy. I actually wanted to throttle him. Why couldn’t he have just told her where to go?
“Oh, it’s fine.” She waved her hand and smiled at him, “I just can’t walk that fast is all.”
“I apologize, we’ll slow down.” The man looped his arm into hers, “You never told me your name.”
“It’s Gracie.” she said with a small smile as she started walking again, “Gracie Mitchell.” Stupid, i***t girl! I wanted to yell at her and shake her. Didn’t her dad tell her not to give her name to complete strangers? Why was I even asking that question? He never told her not to even talk to strangers let alone let them give you a ride home or tell them your name. I smacked my hand on my forehead and some people gave me a weird look. I was going to have to start getting crafty about following them. Grace might not notice me while I was following her, but creepy old guy might. And I couldn’t risk him telling her. Finally, after turning multiple corners and me sending death glares into the guys back we actually reached the parking lot.
Grace spotted her car and smiled widely, “Thank you so much!” she said bouncing on her toes. That was another thing, when she was happy, excited, or nervous she bounced all the time. The guy smiled down at her.
“Is there anything else you need Gracie?” He asked. I hated the way he said her name. It sounded like predator.
“No, thank you again!” She said looking up at the guy, “What was your name again?”
“I’m special agent Even Ray.” The guys voice turned hard and my gut clenched, “And You’re not getting in that car.”
Grace’s eyes widened and she started backing up quickly, “But… why?” she scrunched up her eyebrows and bit her lip. Now would have been the perfect time to jump out and save her, therefore saving my job.
Special agent Even Ray smiled and grabbed Grace’s wrist, “Because you’ll be coming with me. You are a very important asset my dear.” Grace pulled back but let's face it she weighed maybe 110 pounds. I was running now. I felt like an i***t for walking so far behind! If I had gotten caught by this guy, I could have at least prevented this moment.
“Let her go!” I yelled. Yeah, because that works in movies! The guy sneered and jammed something into Grace’s arm. She squeaked and jumped back, only to fall to the ground. Great! Sleep aids, just what I needed. I was also an i***t for giving away my position. I was pretty sure I could take this guy and I was in no mood to come close to losing my job. I had been following the most idiotic girl around all day and my fuse was short. I marched up to the guy and just punched him. How dare he try to mess with my assignment.
Either I had a really good punch, or the guy was a sissy cause he pretty much just fell to the ground, knocked out cold. I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone. I pressed the number two and held it up to my ear. Someone answered on the first ring.
“World’s best agent how can I help you?” I smiled at the voice knowing I could at least get help without answering too many questions.
“Hey d**k, it’s Eli, can you send someone to get a live body?” I asked reaching down and checking Grace’s pulse. Good, she was alive.
“Are you still babysitting?” d**k asked. Great, so everyone knew about the stupidity of my assignment.
“Yes.” I growled, “But someone just tried to take her. I’ll leave him here, tied up, and take Grace back to the hotel.”
“Where are you?” He asked. I could hear typing.
“Denver.” I said with a sigh, he was probably tracking my phone. I glanced over at Special agent Even Ray, he was starting to stir. I punched him again and he went still.
“Look d**k, just send someone, he’s starting to wake up.” I hung up quickly knowing he had time to track to call and dropped the phone on the ground. I walked over to my car and pulled out some rope. Rope was one of those essential tools you should always have in your car. I walked calmly back over to where they were laying and tied up Special agent Even Ray. I hauled him over to Grace’s car and shoved him into the back seat. They would know it was him. I turned around and picked up Grace. The best thing for her would be to wake up in her hotel room and think this was all a very weird dream.
