Chapter 7

Grace: We sat in silence for the rest of breakfast. Eli ate like he was never going to get to eat again. Combine that with the ten cups of coffee he drank I wondered how he didn’t explode. It was my fault we were back to square one. I sighed and pouted down at my pancakes. I tended to get over fights really quickly but from the look on Eli’s face every time I glanced at him told me he didn’t get over things like I did. “Who ate all the bacon?” Levi said looking pointedly at Eli who was now munching on his tenth piece of bacon covered in chocolate sauce. Eli looked up his eyes wide. Slowly he picked up his plate and offered some bacon to Levi. The problem was it was drenched in chocolate sauce with spatters of mayo and syrup. I grimaced just looking at it. Luckily this would be the last time he ate something like that for a while. “That is just wrong.” Levi said shaking his head, “You’ve ruined bacon, which is nearly impossible.” “It’s not ruined, I made it better.” Eli grinned as he started in on another slice of bacon. “No, you didn’t” Levi said shaking his head and crossing his arms, “and you hogged it all! What is wrong with you man!” “Bacon is its own food group.” Eli said, “five servings a day--” Levi cut him off quickly, “clogs up your arteries.” “Oh, like you didn’t eat more than your share?” Eli scoffed, “we cooked two packages, I only got one package worth, and bossy over here had what? Two slices?” “One.” I said my voice cold from being called bossy as I tossed my uneaten slice of bacon over to Levi who smiled triumphantly. “See you’re stealing her food too!” Eli said his voice raising a pitch. “Shut up Eli.” Levi said. “You shut up Dick.” Eli said hunching over his plate protectively. “Fine be that way, Gracie will be my new best friend.” Levi turned to me with a huge grin on his face. “Yeah some friend you are.” Eli growled, “ditching me because I ate one more slice of bacon than you did.” “Hey!” Levi said pointing a finger at Eli, “Bacon is very important, one slice can be the difference between life and death.” “Score I live!” Eli threw his hands up in the air and grinned stupidly at us. I sighed and picked up my plate along with a few of the other dirty dishes. I didn’t even want to get involved with this. Their love for bacon was beyond my comprehension. I placed the dishes in the sink and started to rinse them off. I couldn’t help but think that they had a perfectly good breakfast down stares for us to eat where we wouldn’t have to do dishes. Just as I was finishing up rinsing off the dishes and putting them in the dish washer there was a knock on the door. We all froze. Eli was halfway through his last piece of bacon. Levi was eating some eggs wrapped in a pancake. I was placing a dish in the dishwasher. We all just stayed like that frozen watching the door like it was going to eat us. Suddenly everyone moved at the same time. Eli shoved the rest of the bacon in his mouth and wiped his hands on his jeans. Levi jumped up and walked swiftly to the door. I looked between the two of them wondering what was going on. Eli grabbed my arm and propelled me to my room. “Get under the bed.” He said quietly, “one of us will come get you when it’s safe.” With that he locked my door and shut it. I crawled under the bed and tried to remember how to breath.
