“Again?”
Hollis could tell Vanni was trying to hide his dismay. “I’m sorry,” he replied softly into the phone.
“This is the fourth time in the last two weeks.” There was a sigh then Vanni said, “No I’m sorry. I knew to expect this. Love you, and for God’s sake be careful.”
“You know I will be, I have a real reason to now. Love you back, Vanni.”
After he’d hung up Abbie reached across the console to pat his shoulder. “Now you know how my husband’s felt for the last ten years. Vanni will get used to it in time, honest.”
“But will I?” Hollis asked. “Every time we go out I worry that something will happen to me, and then he’ll be left alone again. He’s fragile, Abbie. He doesn’t act it; he’s got this tough exterior, but underneath I can feel it. I’m not the only one who’s new
