Chapter I
Amidst the chaos of the battle, my initial embrace of warfare transformed into an overwhelming surge of exhilaration. The deafening roar of the bear reverberated through my ears, its fiery breath invading my nostrils and sparking a primal thirst for violence. The desperate gasps of the boy behind me sharpened my senses, causing my nails to dig into the earth. With a defiant growl, I confronted the larger predator, daring it to challenge my position. In a brief moment of respite, amidst the turmoil, I risked stealing a glance at the boy, and my heart raced in response. His right hand pressed firmly against the wounds on his thigh, blood seeping through his fingers and staining his jeans like dark brushstrokes. His torn clothing barely concealed the crimson gashes on his chest. An involuntary snarl escaped my throat. Crouching low, my muscles coiled, poised to strike. The grizzly bear reared up on its hind legs, yet I stood my ground, unyielding. "Sera!" Malissa's urgent cry echoed in my mind. Emerging from the depths of the forest, a sleek, brown wolf darted forward, launching an attack on the bear's vulnerable flank. The bewildered grizzly turned its attention towards the unseen assailant, spewing droplets of saliva with each furious motion. Malissa, swift and agile, evaded the bear's lunges, always one step ahead. Seizing the opportunity, she delivered another provocative bite. Capitalizing on the momentary distraction, I leaped forward and tore into the bear's heel. In pain, the bear swung around to face me, its eyes filled with untamed torment. Malissa and I moved stealthily along the ground, encircling the colossal creature. The scent of the bear's blood heightened my senses, sending waves of anticipation surging through my body. We continued our intricate dance, with the bear's gaze tracking our every movement. I sensed its doubt, its mounting fear. Emitting a sharp, harsh bark, I bared my fangs, causing the grizzly to snort before it turned and lumbered away into the depths of the forest. Raising my muzzle, I released a triumphant howl. Suddenly, a groan pierced the air, drawing me back to reality. The hiker stared at us, wide-eyed. Curiosity compelled me toward him. In that moment, I realized the extent to which I had betrayed my masters and violated their laws, all for the sake of this stranger. Why? My head drooped low as I inhaled deeply, the scent of the hiker's blood wafting over his skin and mingling with the pooling crimson on the ground. Its sharp, metallic aroma cast an intoxicating haze over my conscience. I fought the overwhelming temptation to taste it. "Sera?" Malissa's voice carried alarm, breaking my fixation on the fallen hiker. Leave, I snarled, baring my teeth at the smaller wolf. She lowered herself, slithering along the ground toward me. Then, she raised her muzzle and gently licked the underside of my jaw. What path will you choose? Her piercing blue eyes silently questioned me. She seemed terrified. I wondered if she believed I would kill the boy for my own pleasure. Guilt and shame trickled through my veins. "Mere seconds, Mal," I whispered under my breath, my voice a mere echo of my inner turmoil. "Just a few more moments, and I'll have to make my stand." She hesitated, her amber eyes pleading for understanding. Reluctantly, she emitted a soft whimper, her retreat executed with utmost caution, slipping away stealthily beneath the protective canopy of towering pine trees. My loyal companion understood the gravity of the situation, her instincts urging her to respect the boundaries set by those who held dominion over these lands. Approaching the hiker, I advanced with measured and deliberate steps, every movement calculated. My senses were on high alert, the forest alive with whispers and murmurs that guided my path. My ears, finely attuned to the surroundings, swiveled back and forth, capturing the ambient sounds—rustling leaves, distant birdcalls, and the subtle crackle of twigs underfoot. But amidst the symphony of nature, one sound rang out above all else—the labored breaths escaping his lips, revealing the pain and terror etched deeply on his face. His thigh and chest bore deep wounds inflicted by the savage claws of a grizzly bear. The flow of blood from his injuries remained unyielding, painting a stark contrast against his pale skin. A surge of frustration gripped me, my growl resonating with resentment towards the vulnerability of his human form. I yearned to protect him from the dangers that lurked in these untamed woods. He appeared to be a boy of similar age to mine, approximately seventeen or eighteen years old. His tousled brown hair possessed a subtle, golden shimmer as it fell untidily across his visage. Sweat had affixed strands of hair to his forehead and cheeks, evidence of the physical exertion he had endured. His lean and muscular physique bore testament to his ability to navigate mountains, evident in his successful passage through the treacherous trail leading to this secluded territory. Fear enveloped him, teasing my primal instincts, yet beneath its surface, another scent lingered—a fragrance reminiscent of spring, of burgeoning leaves and thawing earth. It carried a subtle essence of hope and possibility, subtly enticing. My heightened senses detected the underlying warmth of his spirit, even amidst the throes of agony. It was a rare combination that captivated me, drawing me closer to his side. With each step I took towards him, I became acutely aware of my own desires, though their fulfillment would necessitate a second, more significant violation of the revered Keepers' Laws. Attempting to retreat, he gasped and crumpled onto his elbows, his pain incapacitating him. My gaze swept over his countenance, noting his sculpted jawline and prominent cheekbones twisted in agony. Even amidst his torment, he exuded a captivating beauty, his muscles alternately tensing and relaxing, exemplifying his strength and the desperate struggle of his body against imminent collapse. The yearning to aid him consumed me, tempting me to defy the very principles that governed my existence. The sight of his impending doom was unbearable to me. Without fully understanding the consequences, I transformed from a white wolf into a girl with mesmerizing golden eyes and flowing platinum blond hair. The boy watched in astonishment as I knelt beside him, my graceful descent causing his entire body to tremble uncontrollably. As I reached out my hand towards him, I felt a surprising tremor running through my own limbs, a fear unlike anything I had ever experienced. A raspy breath broke the silence. "Who are you?" the boy asked, his eyes a delicate shade between green and gray, resembling the hue of winter moss. His gaze held a multitude of questions, overshadowing the pain he was enduring. Bringing my inner forearm to my lips, I willed my canines to sharpen, piercing my flesh until my own blood mixed with my tongue. Then, I extended my arm to him. "Drink. It is the only elixir that can save your life," I spoke in a low but determined voice. The trembling in his limbs intensified, and he shook his head in refusal. My voice transformed into a menacing growl, filled with resolve. With unwavering conviction, I urged him, "You have no choice but to obey." As I spoke, my glinting canines served as a stark reminder of the deep wound on my arm caused by my own fierce bite. I hoped the sight of my formidable wolf form would strike fear into him, compelling him to submit to my command. However, to my surprise, instead of terror, his eyes shimmered with awe and wonder. Perplexed by his unexpected reaction, I blinked at him, struggling to remain motionless while blood slowly dripped from my arm, staining the ground beneath us crimson. Reacting to a surge of fresh pain, he tightly shut his eyes, his face contorting in a grimace. I pressed my bleeding forearm against his parted lips, and as his touch met mine, an electric sensation surged through my veins, scorching my skin. Suppressing a gasp, I marveled at the unfamiliar and unsettling experiences that coursed through me, a mix of fear and fascination. Though he flinched from the sensation, I swiftly wrapped my other arm around his back, immobilizing him, while my blood continued to flow into his mouth. The closeness between us intensified the heat within me. I could sense his desire to resist, yet he lacked the strength to do so. A smile tugged at the corners of my mouth. Even as my own body reacted in unpredictable ways, I knew I could control him. A shiver ran through me as his hands gripped my arm, pressing into my skin. The hiker's breathing became effortless, slow, and steady, surrendering to my influence. A deep ache stirred within me, causing my fingers to tremble. The longing to caress his skin, to trace the healing wounds and explore the contours of his muscles, consumed me. Biting my lip, I fought against the overwhelming temptation, engaging in a constant inner battle, reminding myself, "Come on, Sera, you know better. This isn't like you." Reluctantly, I pulled my arm free from his grasp, and a disappointed whimper slipped out of the boy's throat. The sudden absence of contact left me feeling a profound loss. But I knew I had to gather my strength, tapping into the primal instincts of the wolf that resided within me. It was my true nature. Letting out a warning growl, I shook my head and tore a strip of fabric from the torn shirt of a hiker nearby to bind my own wound. The boy's moss-colored eyes followed my every move, observing me closely. As I rose to my feet, he surprised me by imitating my action, although he stumbled slightly. Frowning, I took a couple of steps back, watching his reaction. His gaze flickered between my retreat and his torn clothing. Tentatively, he played with the tattered shreds of his shirt. When our eyes met again, a sudden dizziness washed over me. I couldn't tear my gaze away from his lips—plump and curved with curiosity, devoid of the terror I had expected. His eyes held numerous questions, begging for answers. I knew I had to leave. "You'll be okay. Get off this mountain and never come back," I commanded, turning away, determined to put distance between us. A jolt coursed through my body as the boy's hand tightened its grip on my shoulder. His surprise was evident, but fear seemed to be absent. That raised concern within me. Heat surged through my skin wherever his fingers held me firmly. For a brief moment, I hesitated, studying his face intently, committing every detail to memory. Then, with a snarl, I shrugged off his touch, trying to ignore the pull I felt towards him. "Wait," he pleaded, taking another step closer to me. What if I chose to freeze time, to suspend my life in this very moment? What if I allowed myself to indulge in stolen moments, in the forbidden desires that I had suppressed for so long? Would it be a moral transgression? I knew I would never cross paths with this stranger again. What harm could come from lingering here, from staying still and discovering if he could fulfill my deepest longings? His scent confirmed the accuracy of my thoughts, his skin pulsating with adrenaline and emitting a musky fragrance that revealed his own desire. I had let this encounter go on for far longer than was wise. Regret tugged at me, and I tightened my fist. I examined his body, recalling the sensation of his lips on my skin. He offered a hesitant smile. That was enough. With a swift and forceful blow, my fist collided with his jaw, sending him crashing to the ground in a heap of defeat. I knelt down, cradling the fallen youth in my arms, while draping his backpack over my shoulder. The scent of nature, fresh meadows, and dew-kissed branches filled the air around me, awakening a deep, unfamiliar yearning within me—a physical reminder of the betrayal I had just experienced. As twilight cast its elongating shadows upon the mountain, I knew I had to reach the base before nightfall, carrying him with me. By the glistening waterway that marked the boundary of the hallowed grounds, a weary pickup truck stood solitary. Bright orange letters on black signs sternly warned against trespassing on the private property lining the creek bank. With a forceful swing, I unlocked the door of the worn-out Ford Ranger, nearly tearing it from the rusty vehicle. Carefully, I positioned the lifeless body of the young man across the driver's seat, his head slumping forward, revealing an intricate, dark cross tattoo adorning the back of his neck—a symbol of both trespass and conformity. In a way, I found solace in disliking something about him. Tossing his backpack onto the passenger seat, I slammed the door shut, causing the tired truck's frame to groan in protest. Still trembling with frustration, I transformed into my wolf form and swiftly disappeared into the forest, carrying the scent of the fallen youth and my unwavering determination. However, a new scent hung in the air, amplifying my sense of betrayal. "I know you're here," I growled in my thoughts, a snarl accompanying my words. "Are you okay?" Malissa's voice resonated with genuine concern, intensifying the fear pulsating through my trembling muscles. Moments later, she ran alongside me. "I told you to leave," I grumbled, but the sudden relief I felt in her presence was undeniable. "I could never abandon you." Malissa effortlessly matched my pace. "And you know I would never betray you." Increasing my speed, I darted through the deepening shadows of the forest. I relinquished my futile attempt to outrun fear, shifting back into my human form and stumbling until I found support against the comforting embrace of a tree trunk. The rough bark scraped against my skin, failing to distract from the swarm of nerves buzzing within my mind. "Why did you save him?" she inquired, her concern evident in her voice. "Humans mean nothing to us." Though I kept my arms wrapped around the tree, I turned my face slightly to meet Malissa's gaze. No longer in her wolf form, the short and wiry girl stood with her hands on her hips, her narrowed eyes silently demanding an explanation. I blinked, trying in vain to hold back the intense burn that surged through my eyes. Uninvited tears formed and followed the contours of my cheeks, marking their presence. Malissa's eyes grew wider in astonishment. I wasn't known for shedding tears, especially not in front of others. I averted my gaze, hoping to escape her watchful eyes, but I sensed her silent scrutiny, free from any hint of condemnation. I had no explanations to offer her. And just as much as I lacked answers for her, I found myself utterly bereft of any answers for myself.
