Chapter1:Desperation
Amanda’s POV
I sat at my reading table, so disturbed as i stared blankly at the pile of bills in front of me. I buried my head in my hands, my mind numb and my heart heavy with the weight of my responsibilities.
Grrrrrr, my stomach roared for hunger. I went to the kitchen hoping to fill in her stomach. I opened the pots and cabinets but they were empty.
I was depressed. I think deeply about how I worked so hard from my tender age but yet nothing to show forth. I kept on moving from one debt to another. My mother's hospital bill was the largest, a huge amount that seemed impossible to pay. And then I was already on the verge of losing my apartment. My head spun as i tried to make sense of it all.
I had always been the strong one, the one who took care of everyone else. But now, I felt like i was drowning in debt.
My thoughts drifted back to my mother, who was lying sick on the hospital bed. She had always been my rock and confidant, but now, i felt like I was failing her.
Just as I was done sulking with my thoughts, I decided to get ready for my second job when my phone rang. As i picked up my phone and checked the number displayed on the screen, my mind raced—it was the hospital.
“Am I unto Amanda Karl?” the person from the other end asked professionally.
“Yes, you are speaking to Amanda Karl,” i answered softly.
“You are speaking with Esther from Vine hospital, we have been trying to reach you since last night but your number wasn't going through,” Esther immediately said.
My heart skipped and i could feel my heart move to my stomach in fear when i heard Esther say they have been calling my number since last night.
“Your attention is needed in the hospital,” Esther said as she continued “The doctor wants to see you urgently.”
My heart sank as I listened to the caller from the hospital. I knew I had to be at the hospital, but I had no money to pay for my mother's hospital bill.
“Okay, I will be at the hospital soon,” I said, scared out of my wit.
I immediately dressed up, picked up my phone, and headed out to get a cab to the hospital.
As I sat in the cab, feeling helpless and hopeless, my mind began to wander. Is my mum's condition getting critical, did the hospital want me to take her mother out of their hospital because she is yet to pay her bills? I questioned within myself. I thought about all the things i could do to make money, but none of them seemed feasible.
I got to the hospital and was directed to see the doctor.
On opening the door to the doctor's office, I took a deep breath to calm myself.
“Good morning, sir. I was told you asked me to see you,” I said, my voice shaking.
“Good morning, Amanda,” he replied as he packed up the files in front of him. “Yes, I demanded you see me. Last night your mother’s condition got critical but we were able to stabilize her.”
“Thank you so much, sir”
“Her condition is getting worse day by day, she needs full medical attention,” the doctor looked at me with pity. “I'm sorry, we won't be able to give her any treatment until a reasonable deposit is made.”
“Sir, please don’t stop her treatment. I will pay every dime we owe,” she said on her knees, my eyes welled up with tears. “Please sir, give me two weeks.”
He stood up and motioned to the shelf to pick up a file.
“I’m sorry there is nothing we could do without a deposit,” he said as he glanced through the file in his hand. “If you may excuse me, I have work to do.”
Just as I left the doctor's office, the welled-up tears in my eyes began to roll down uncontrollably. I headed to my mother's ward to check up on her. On my way to the ward, I pump into an elegant, handsome young man around his 30s.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to hit you,” she apologized, cleaning the tears on my face.
“I…” Before the man could say a word, I already left hurriedly.
As I entered my mother’s ward and walked closer to her bed, I tried to hold on to my tears but seeing her condition, my eyes turned reddish, the bag on my shoulder slipped off to the floor and tears began to roll down my cheeks.
I held her hand tight “Mom, I will make sure I do anything for you to get better, I promise.”
I knew wallowing in tears won’t solve any of my problems. I need to act fast on getting the deposit as soon as possible. I picked up my bag and left the hospital.
I was waiting to get a cab when a Lexus car parked beside her. “Get into the car,” the man from before ordered.
I looked around to confirm who he was talking to, then i gestured to myself, “Are you talking to me? I don't know you so why should I enter into your car?”
“I am Andrew Benz. I have a business proposal for you”
I became more tense as i raised my eyebrows, being skeptical.
“What is the proposal all about?”
Andrew smiled as he stared at me, making me confused and curious for an answer.
“Enter into the car and I will tell you about the business proposal,” he said with a smile.
I moved closer to the car, trying to figure out the look on his face.
I entered the car and questioned curiously, “What is the proposal all about?”
“Marry me,” he replied. “I will pay for all your debts including your mother's medical care.”
My jaw dropped in shock, I couldn't believe what I just heard.
“You obviously can’t be serious, right?” I asked stammering in shock.
“I’m serious about it.”
He grinned and gave me a wink seeing the shock on my face.
He smiled as he stretched forth his complementary card “I know you need time to think about it. Have it, you can give me a call on that number.”
“I accept your proposal,” my voice below a whisper.
Andrew’s smile grew wider “Excellent decision, Amanda,” he said, his voice dripping with satisfaction. “I will send a car to pick you up tomorrow at 10:00am to finalize our marriage paper by my lawyer.
