CHAPTER 4: ISOLATION

1117 Words
I woke up the next morning, feeling sore and emotionally drained. The event of the previous night replayed in my mind like a dream. I opened up to him thinking maybe… just maybe the intimacy would build the bond between us but my perception was wrong. I couldn't believe Andrew used my body as punishment for something I didn't do. As I lay in bed, trying to gather my thoughts, I heard a knock on the door. It was Mrs. Vivian. “Good morning, ma’am, Mrs. Vivian said, her voice cheerful. “ Breakfast is ready.” “Thank you, Mrs Vivian,” I said, trying to sound grateful. “I’m not hungry yet.” “But Mr. Andrew is waiting for you,” she said What is he up to this time? Why is he waiting for me after what he did to me? Is he planning to humiliate me in the presence of his workers? My mind raced as different thoughts dropped into my mind. I quickly pushed the thought aside. “I will join him soon,” I said, my voice shaking. My heart beats heavily as i walk through the stairs. I took a deep breath and summoned the courage to confront Andrew. Getting to the dining room, I scanned it but couldn't see Andrew. I inhaled deeply, relieved he was not in the dining room. I shrunk back, fear coursing through my veins as I heard a voice behind me. “You must be Amanda, Andrew already told me about you,” she said with a smile. I turned and saw a lady with a cup of coffee. A trace of confusion flashed in my eyes. “Oh! Sorry, I'm Cassandra, Andrew’s cousin. You can call me Cassie,” she said sharply. “You look beautiful, I think I like you.” “Thank you, Cassie,” I said with a fake smile. Andrew’s behavior became more controlling. He would lash out at me for no reason in the presence of Cassie and his workers, making her feel less of myself. Cassie always supported Andrew but sometimes when she noticed he was overreacting she would calm him down. Cassie is the only person who can talk to Andrew and he would listen, she is the only family he has and he loves her so much. Andrew’s attitude became worse. He would leave me all to myself even when he was off work. He will stay in his library all day without checking up on me. I decided to find out why Andrew was so engrossed with the library. I felt like I was losing herself. I was no longer allowed to see my friends and family. Andrew took away my phone, I have no means to communicate with my family and friends. Andrew will often taunt me, reminding me of how he helped my life and family, telling me that i’m nothing without him and that i would never be able to survive on my own. The only person I saw regularly was Mrs. Vivian, who would bring me meals and tidy up my room. She would look at me with pity, then shake her head. But even Mrs. Vivian’s visits were always brief and awkward, she was following the instructions given to her by Andrew, just for her to protect her job. I began to feel like I was living in a bubble, cut off from the world outside. I would stand in my courtyard staring at the swimming pool, wondering what was happening beyond the confines of the house. Andrew was in his library, he was going through some documents when the phone in his drawer rang. He unlocked the drawer and brought out the phone. He smiled when he saw the caller on the phone. “Hey, any good news?” He asked “Boss, I have it here with me,” the person on the other end replied. “Good, I will be with you shortly,” he said, the corner of his mouth widened. Andrew rushed out of the library, he picked up his car keys, motioned to the car garage, and drove out. I had been in my room all day, my eyebrows furrowed as I yawned. As I heard Andrew drive out, i stretched my body, feeling delighted to walk around the compound without worries. As I walked through the hallway, i saw the door to Andrew’s library was unlocked. I entered the library and scanned it with my eyes. I checked the library but i couldn’t find anything hidden. I motioned to the bookshelf to pick a book I could read. Just as my finger creeps through the books, i heard a phone ring. I thought it was Andrew's phone, probably he forgot it. I looked at the table but i didn’t find the phone. I traced the sound of the phone to the drawer. I tried to open the drawer, but it was locked. “Why will he lock a phone in the drawer?” I murmured. I was searching for the key to the drawer when the door creaked open. My eyes wide opened, and i shrunk back, fear coursing through my veins as he walked into the library. “What are you doing in my space” he asked, suspicion creeping into his voice. “I saw the library opened,” i said my voice shaking and my hand clasped tightly in front of me. “I… I wanted to borrow a book to read.” The phone rang again. Andrew motioned to the drawer to check if it was opened. “I don’t want to ever see you here again” he warned me, his voice low and dangerous. “What are you waiting for? Shut the door behind you.” My eyes were downcast as I left the room. I stood in front of the mirror, held a pregnancy test tube and my eyes staring at the two red lines on it. My eyebrows lowered and knit together when i discovered i was pregnant. I was worried about the kind of life my unborn child would live with Andrew as a father. Tears rolled down my eyes. I couldn’t bear having a child with him. I thought of terminating the pregnancy. I decided not to tell Andrew about the pregnancy. I heard a knock on my door. I quickly kept the pregnancy test tube in my drawer. Cassie entered the room scanning every corner to know why i kept her waiting before i opened the door. “Are you pregnant?” She asked with a twisted smile, staring at the dustbin where i threw the sachet of the pregnancy test.
