Chapter Five: The Dinner

1034 Words
Andrew kept making me feel like a stranger in my home. He gave me orders like i was one of his workers. I felt sorry for my mother because after i got married to Andrew, she hadn't seen me. As he kept saying i was nothing without him, i began to believe i couldn't do without him. I blamed myself for accepting the proposal. I had been paying for my mistake for six years. Now and then, i regrets my actions. It had been six years since i married him. After so much endurance, I wanted to be free from the cage I found myself in, most especially for the sake of my son. Why did he marry me when he knew he wouldn't love me properly? It had been six years but i still remembered how harshly he treated me on the night of the charity gala, our first night together as a couple. He buys expensive gifts for me but he treat me terribly. For six years, he kept on reminding me how he pulled me out of poverty. He did not stop at neglecting only me, he also neglected our son, no father-to-son bond between them. I endured this behavior because i didn’t want my son to grow up in a broken marriage, i hoped he would change as a father but i was wrong. One evening, Andrew and Cassie invited their business partners, William Greg, and William Jason, with their family for dinner before leaving for their city after sealing a contract with them. “I will be having my business partners around this evening, make sure you comport yourself,” he said in a cold voice. His eyes scanned me from head to toe, “You look a mess, make sure you add makeup to your face and put on the white dress I bought for you.” I looked at my reflection in the mirror. I looked pale and my lips dry. It’s almost time for dinner. I did a slight makeup and put on the white dress as instructed by Andrew. I removed the bond on my hair and styled it, making it look flawless. Andrew and Cassie were having a chit-chat with Greg and Jason when i walked down the stairs with David by my side. Andrew introduced me to Greg and Jason, “Meet my wife, Amanda,” he said with a smile. I exchange pleasantries with the William family. David saw Greg’s daughter, Kayla. He was full of excitement when he saw someone of his age group he could play with. He has been all by himself from birth, with no friend to talk to or play with. “You look pretty,” Jason said. “Thank you.” The smile on Andrew’s face disappeared, and his eyes turned reddish. He hates it when people compliment me. Cassie noticed Andrew’s countenance. She tried to divert his attention, “The dining is fully set, let’s move to the dining table.” David spilled his drink. As he stood up, his hand hit the glass cup on the table to the floor. Andrew’s eyes turned red, he felt David embarrassed him in front of his guest. “Why can't you behave yourself,” he questioned, his expression was cold but harsh. I stood up to check if David wasn’t hurt. As I picked up the broken glass, Jason left the table and assisted me. Andrew’s face twisted into a mask of anger, his fists clenched as he gazed at Amanda and Jason. With the look on Andrew’s face, fear runs through my veins. I took David upstairs to change his clothes and Andrew followed us immediately. “I can see how you flex with Jason. You don't have any iota of respect for me. Now you flex with another man in my presence. I don't want to see you leave this room” he warned, his voice low and menacing. He walked towards the door, then turned back “You must not leave this room,” he repeated. Andrew slammed the door behind him. My face downcast, I pulled David close to myself and gave him a tight hug as tears rolled down my cheeks. “Mum, Dad doesn't like me,” David said. I quickly rubbed off the tears on my cheeks and reined in the tears clouded in my eyes. I cleared the lump form in my throat, pulled him from my hug, and looked at his face. “Dad loves you, just that he has been busy with work.” David looked at me and nodded but he wasn’t convinced. As the evening drew to a close, I couldn't take the thought of what David said about Andrew from my mind. I have been with him because of our son. Andrew doesn’t give David any attention to interact with him. He does not allow him to attend school like other kids. He employed a teacher to teach him at home. All his life has been him staying in the house. I couldn’t endure Andrew’s attitude anymore. I knew I had to escape, and I could only do it that night I thought of a way I could escape without Andrew noticing. I could only think of one way… just one way, the laundry room. I packed two clothes for David and myself. I held David by the hand as I peeped through the door. I quickly opened the door and sneaked through the hallway with David. I creaked the door open and entered the laundry room. I tried to open the back door of the laundry room but it was locked. I searched every corner for the key to the door. I looked at David and smiled as I sighed for relief with the key in my hand. I creaked the door opened, and the handle of the door fell to the floor. I heard footsteps walking toward the laundry room. Fear coarse through my veins, sweat dripping through my face and my hands shaking, my hope of escaping is about to be dashed. David looked at me and held her hands tight. My eyes were wide opened when the door creak open.
