Chapter 1
I sit here in treatment, yearning to break free, to explore the universe they've finally unveiled to us. I'm on Mars, a planet designated mostly for medical care—my care. Yet, despite the advanced technologies at my disposal, I can’t shake the feeling of being trapped. What I truly crave is to venture beyond, to see other worlds. I’m sick, battling both chronic illness and infections, fighting to get better. My companion, Tommy, stands by me. He's a robot I named myself, programmed to assist with every need. Efficient and tireless, Tommy is my constant companion in this sterile environment. Yet, he’s not what I imagine traveling with. I dream of exploring the cosmos with someone—or something—that shares my sense of wonder and adventure. I used to live in Earth and I know how it’s evolved into a paradise where healthcare is not only more advanced but also deeply personalized. I ended up in Mars Because of one bad decision. One day, when I’m finally healed, I want to see it for myself again. I dream of Earth often, imagining its vibrant landscapes and flawless skies, and how the air must feel against your skin—unblemished by the sterile environment of this medical hub. The holograms they show us of Earth seem almost too perfect, but I want to believe they’re real. Mars is functional and utilitarian. Everything here is designed for healing, not living. I feel like a prisoner of my own recovery, confined by the very technologies that are supposed to save me.
