EPISODE 1: THE MAN WHO DIED TWICE
THE ALPHA’S LAST LIE
Episode 1: The Man Who Died Twice
The dead man opened his eyes.
Seraphina Vale froze.
Three minutes ago, she had pronounced him dead. His heart had stopped, his skin had turned cold, and the silver poisoning in his blood had made saving him impossible.
Now he was staring directly at her.
“Doctor,” he rasped.
Seraphina leaned over him. “Don’t try to move. You’re in a hospital.”
His fingers clamped around her wrist with terrifying strength.
“Don’t let him marry her.”
“Who? Who are you talking about?”
The man’s lips trembled. His gaze flickered toward the door, as though someone stood on the other side.
Then he whispered two words that made Seraphina’s blood run cold.
“Your mate lied.”
His hand fell.
The monitor screamed.
Seraphina immediately began resuscitation, but it was useless. The man’s heart had stopped again.
He was dead.
For the second time.
And this time, he had taken a secret with him.
---
Seraphina had spent four years learning how to save lives. She had learned to remain calm during emergencies, to ignore frightened screams, and to accept that not every patient could be rescued.
What she had never learned was how to explain a dead man coming back to life.
She pulled off her gloves and stared at the body.
“Cause of death?” asked Daniel, the nurse assisting her.
“Silver poisoning. Severe exposure, possibly administered directly into the bloodstream.”
“Then how did he wake up?”
“I don’t know.”
It was the truth, and Seraphina hated how helpless it sounded.
She reached for the patient’s wrist to check his identification bracelet. There was none. His clothes were expensive, his hands carefully manicured, and a dark ring rested on his right index finger.
The ring bore the crest of House Blackthorne.
Seraphina’s stomach tightened.
She knew that crest.
Everyone in the kingdom knew it. House Blackthorne ruled the largest werewolf territory in New Avalon, and its Alpha, Lucien Blackthorne, was a man people obeyed long before he entered a room.
Lucien was also the man who had rejected Seraphina as his mate three years ago.
She had survived the rejection. She had survived the whispers, the pity, and the humiliation of watching him choose another woman.
She had even survived the night she promised herself she would never let his name control her life again.
But she had never forgotten him.
She leaned closer to the ring. Tiny letters had been engraved inside it.
C.A.B.
Celeste Ashbourne Blackthorne.
The Alpha’s wife.
Why would a dead stranger be wearing something connected to her?
Before Seraphina could examine it further, hurried footsteps sounded outside.
A woman entered the room, accompanied by two guards.
She wore a cream-coloured coat over an elegant black dress. Her dark hair fell in perfect waves, and a diamond rested at the hollow of her throat.
Seraphina recognised her immediately.
Celeste Ashbourne Blackthorne.
The kingdom’s chosen Luna.
Celeste glanced at the body.
Then all the colour drained from her face.
“No,” she whispered.
One of the guards stepped forward. “Your Highness?”
Celeste ignored him. She moved toward the bed, staring at the dead man as though the world had just opened beneath her feet.
“Julian?”
Seraphina straightened. “You know him?”
Celeste pressed a trembling hand against her mouth.
“My brother.”
The room went silent.
“Your brother?” Seraphina repeated carefully.
“Julian Ashbourne.” Celeste’s eyes filled with tears. “He died six years ago.”
Seraphina looked from Celeste to the body.
“That’s impossible. This man was brought in tonight.”
“I buried him.”
Celeste said it with such certainty that Seraphina believed her.
Then Celeste turned sharply toward the guards.
“Leave us.”
“Your Highness, we were instructed—”
“I said leave!”
The guards exchanged a glance before stepping outside. Daniel followed, but not before giving Seraphina a worried look.
The door closed.
For several seconds, neither woman spoke.
Finally, Seraphina asked, “What happened to your brother?”
Celeste’s expression hardened beneath her grief.
“Lucien killed him.”
The name struck Seraphina like a slap.
“Why would the Alpha kill your brother?”
“Because Julian discovered something he wasn’t supposed to know.”
“What?”
Celeste looked toward the door.
“Something that could destroy Lucien’s rule.”
Seraphina folded her arms. “You expect me to believe the Alpha murdered your brother, and now you’ve come here to tell me about it?”
“No.” Celeste stepped closer. “I expect you to believe what you saw.”
Seraphina had no answer.
Celeste reached into her coat and removed a small photograph. She handed it over.
It showed two young men standing beside a lake. One was the dead patient. The other was Lucien Blackthorne.
They were smiling.
They looked like friends.
On the back, someone had written: Before the truth.
Seraphina’s fingers tightened around the photograph.
“Why bring this to me?”
“Because Julian asked for you.”
Her heart stumbled.
“He was unconscious when he arrived.”
“Then perhaps he knew you would be here before he came.”
“That makes no sense.”
“Neither does a dead man coming back to life.”
Seraphina hated that Celeste had a point.
She studied the photograph again. Lucien looked younger, less guarded. She remembered the man he had been before their bond turned into a public humiliation.
For one foolish moment, she had believed their connection meant he would protect her.
Instead, he had looked her in the eyes and told her he would never choose a weak mate.
She had spent years wondering what she had done wrong.
Now a dying stranger had returned from death to tell her that Lucien had lied.
“What happens tomorrow?” Seraphina asked.
Celeste’s gaze lifted.
“Tomorrow night, Lucien will announce the birth of his heir.”
“His heir? You’re pregnant?”
Celeste nodded, but there was no happiness in her expression.
Seraphina looked at her stomach, then back at her face.
“Does Lucien know about your brother?”
“He knows Julian is dead.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
Celeste’s jaw tightened. “You ask too many questions, Doctor.”
“And you’re giving me too few answers.”
For the first time, Celeste almost smiled.
“Perhaps that is why Julian wanted you.”
She turned to leave, then stopped beside the door.
“Seraphina, if anyone asks, you never saw that ring. You never heard Julian speak. And you certainly never heard me say Lucien’s name.”
“Why?”
“Because if Lucien discovers what happened tonight, he won’t wait for another funeral.”
Celeste left.
Seraphina stood alone with the photograph and the dead man’s final words echoing in her mind.
Your mate lied.
Suddenly, a sharp pain twisted through her chest.
She grabbed the edge of the bed.
It was her mate bond.
Three years ago, she had thought Lucien’s rejection had severed it completely. Yet the bond had never disappeared. It had merely become a quiet ache she had learned to ignore.
Now it pulsed beneath her ribs.
Once.
Twice.
Then Seraphina heard something that made her blood turn to ice.
A heartbeat.
Not the patient’s.
Not her own.
Another heartbeat, faint but unmistakable, seemed to echo through the room.
She had heard that rhythm before.
Three months ago, a mysterious patient had arrived at the hospital with the same strange silver poisoning. He had been transferred before she could question him, and his records had vanished from the system.
Seraphina had assumed someone had made a mistake.
Now she understood that the two cases were connected.
She looked at the closed door.
Tomorrow night, Lucien Blackthorne would announce his heir.
And someone was desperate to stop the wedding—or whatever celebration was about to take place.
Her phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
One message appeared on the screen.
STOP ASKING ABOUT JULIAN. YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT LIVES INSIDE THAT CHILD.
Seraphina read it twice.
Then another message arrived.
ASK CELESTE WHO THE FATHER REALLY IS.
The room seemed to tilt.
Seraphina stared at the words, her mind racing through every possibility.
When she looked up, Celeste was standing in the doorway again.
She had returned so quietly that Seraphina hadn’t heard her.
“You received the message,” Celeste said.
It wasn’t a question.
Seraphina held up the phone. “Who sent this?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then tell me the truth. What is happening?”
Celeste’s composure finally cracked. She looked terrified.
“Lucien didn’t choose me because he loved me.”
“Then why did he marry you?”
Celeste swallowed hard.
“Because I was the only woman in the kingdom who could give him an heir.”
Seraphina glanced at her stomach.
“And the child?”
Celeste’s eyes filled with tears.
“The child is the reason Julian died.”
She stepped closer and lowered her voice.
“And because the child I’m carrying…”
Her lips trembled.
“…isn’t his.”
