CHAPTER ONE: First Impressions
"Late again, are we, Miss Sydney?" A voice came from behind the door just as she snuck into the common room of the office. Eva froze, standing in front of the glass door with her hand still gripping the handle. She was contemplating whether to go back outside or turn around to face her predicament. Could this be it? Getting fired on her second week on the job, Eva thought to herself. She took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves and gather the courage to turn around. With a mixture of dread and determination, she turned around to face her situation. She saw an average middle-aged man grinning at her with a look that was both mocking and amused. "Oh, Mr. Spencer," she managed to say, forcing a smile onto her face that seemed more like a frown. Her voice, though attempting to sound happy, was filled with worry. "I didn't see you there," she added, trying to sound nonchalant despite the uneasiness in her chest. "Clearly, you didn't," he fired back at her with intended sarcasm in his tone. His eyes narrowed slightly, making it clear he wasn't buying her explanation. "What happened this time?" he asked, mockingly, pretending to be interested in her excuse. His body language suggested he was more amused than sympathetic. "Well, Mr. Spencer, I am just returning from the hospital," Eva explained, her voice filled with nervousness. "Mhmhmm," he said, straining his eyes at her in suspicion. "My mom is currently at the hospital, so…" Eva stopped midway, uncertain whether to continue explaining to Mr. Spencer, who clearly did not believe her. Mr. Spencer was a middle-aged man in his thirties with a petite stature that made it believable that he was much younger than his age. He was the supervisor of the department of executive finance, headed by the son of the CEO, whom Eva had just been employed to assist. He tucked his hands into both sides of the pockets of his carefully ironed cotton trousers. The trousers were held in place with a leather belt boldly flaunting the 'Saint Laurent' badge, with a neatly ironed 'Saint Laurent' shirt tucked in. He tilted his neck to the right, raising his eyebrows and grinning as he waited for Eva to continue her explanation. "Anyways, if I were you, I would be on my way to pay salutations to my boss," he said, straining his eyes mischievously. "Boss? I thought he wasn't coming back into the country until two months or so," Eva said, her confusion evident. Mr. Spencer let out a loud sigh and slapped his right hand against his forehead in frustration. "Do you not get any information about what goes on in the office?" he asked, his frustration evident. "Anyway, the boss just came into the UK last night for an urgent meeting with the CEO, and if I were you, I'd get familiar with him soon enough," Mr. Spencer informed her, shaking his head in disapproval. "He also left a message for you to run an errand for him," he added, handing her a sticky note with a message written in bold black ink. 'I'd like a cup of black coffee on my table before ten o'clock,' Eva read aloud. "The message seemed quite demanding and very impolite," Eva thought to herself, her frustration growing. "I'd better get going then," Eva realized, her determination strengthening. With a heavy sigh, she dropped her bag on a couch in the common room. "Make sure to be back before ten. That's when his meeting starts," Mr. Spencer added, turning his back to her and heading to his office. "Right," Eva answered him, looking down at her wristwatch, which showed the time was already thirty minutes past nine. "I can do this," Eva encouraged herself as she ran out of the common room with the sticky note. "No sweetener or cream, ma'am?" The café attendant behind the counter asked Eva, holding a pen and notepad. "No cream, please," Eva replied, knowing any small mistake could jeopardize her job. "Oh, and no sweetener added. Thank you!" she added just in time before the café attendant made his way to submit her order. "Ugh! This should be ready before ten; if not, I'm toast," Eva groaned to herself, lifting her wristwatch to her face, which showed the time to be already twenty minutes to ten. She stood by the counter, leaning in to catch a glimpse of the attendant coming back with her order. She stretched impatiently as far as her silver flats would allow. A few minutes later, the attendant came back to the counter with Eva's order. "Here you go, ma'am. That'll be ten dollars," he said, handing her the hot cup of coffee. "Thanks," Eva responded hurriedly, placing the money on the counter and dashing out of the café. ******** "I'm here with it!" Eva panted as she entered her supervisor's office. "Well, right on time, Ms. Sydney," Mr. Spencer said, looking up at the wall clock on his wall that read five minutes to ten. "If I were you, I'd go to his office to hand it to him before the meeting," Mr. Spencer warned, his tone carrying a hint of urgency. He glanced at the clock and then back at Eva, indicating the importance of speed. With that, Eva dashed out of his office and headed for the passage that led to the office of the CEO's son. It was the only room at the end of the passage, with no extension offices next to it. The door looked like it was made out of finely polished foreign timber. "Okay, then, there it is," Eva whispered to herself beneath her breath, her nervousness mixed with excitement. She was anxious and excited to finally meet her employer. She hoped that what she had heard from the other coworkers about the son of the CEO wasn't true—about him being arrogant, uncompassionate, and inhumane. She walked down the passage till she came face to face with the door of his office. Holding the cup of coffee to her chest, she placed her other hand on the doorknob, gathering up the courage to go in. As she was about to open the door, the knob twisted from the inside, causing the door to swing open. Just then, someone hurriedly walked out of the door and bumped into her in the blink of an eye.
