Chapter 20 – Brandon Things were going slow and casual with Miriam. I wasn’t really sure what I was doing. She was a beautiful girl, but I knew there was more to her. She seemed simple and uncomplicated on paper when I read her file. Now, she was this regal person who commandeered a room and brought everyone to attention. She had an aura, a strong aura and every time I was around her, I sensed it stronger. She also seemed… expensive. She did not dress or have the mannerisms of the girls from the Mother Mountain. She reminded me of the girls from the city when I was at university. Even with all the mystery around her, she was someone I could see as Luna to the pack. But that something about her that I couldn’t place, left me perplexed. When I heard her name over a year ago as the educator the Canon Mountain pack would be sending us, I felt like I couldn’t wait to meet her. And now here she was, and she was the biggest contradiction I had ever met. My wolf liked her, and if I wasn’t mistaken, he was fiercely loyal and protective of her. But she wasn’t my mate, and that left me feeling defeated. Over the last several years, since my twin brother took a chosen human mate, Daisy, I was feeling drained and like I was lacking. After Daisy and my brother married through the human church and completed the pack mating ritual, the pack was in a state of bliss. A feeling of completion and strength overtook every single one of us. That’s what a Luna did for her pack. Even though Daisy was human, she completed the Golden Cross pack. We had been without a Luna for years after our mother was taken and probably killed by rouges. After we lost Daisy, no one suffered like Nathan, but her absence was most definitely felt throughout the pack. She dutifully emersed herself in her Luna role. She was a sweet girl, and she was missed. No one blamed Nathan, but we all knew he blamed himself. Now I was here, with this strange and almost enchanting girl. She was doting and loving on the Arabians that belonged to the Tenok family. And they took to liking her fast. Which was in itself odd. They were old horses, set in their ways and didn’t like new faces around. I could almost feel her wolf call out to them. We had mostly humans attend to theses horses because they would get restless around most wolves. But they took great to Miriam. It was a shame they were old and suffering, they would be gone soon. When I heard the shouts and arguing coming from the silos, I was surprised Miriam heard it as well. It was a good two miles toward the east. With numerous scenarios running through my mind, I ran to the SUV with her following close behind me and I was surprised she could keep up with me at every turn. It momentarily made me think of her wolf. When we reached the silos, the scene was not what I was expecting. There were teenage weres huddled over something or… someone. I ran over and the teenagers parted without saying a word. I could feel their surprise at seeing me here, and their fear. I saw a human teenage boy whom I immediately recognized. I had been to see his sister and her Golden Cross warrior mate this morning. She was already on bedrest because of the stress from her pregnancy, carrying a were pup, and the scare she received from the f***ers from the Moonstone pack. Seeing her so frail and pregnant with our warrior, Micah, worried over his mate and unborn pup because of sorry excuse of an alpha already had my blood boiling. If I ever saw Dean again, I swear to the goddess I would rip his throat out, laws be damned. We now had her brother, Frank, to contend with. He looked terrible, his body was twisted at odd angles and his heartbeat was very faint. I didn’t even have to ask what happened, it was clear he fell off one of the silos. Before I could ask the teenager werewolves around what had happened exactly, Miriam was on the ground beside Frank. She seemed to be looking over him, assessing his injuries. “We need to call an ambulance. He needs medical attention now, he’s still breathing!” she shouts. “We don’t have ambulances.” One of the teenage weres scoffs. At that I let out a strong growl at him making them all bow and cower down, submitting their necks. “We need to get medical attention, NOW!” Miriam yells and I can feel all of our wolves submit to her indirect command. She starts setting us in motion, “you, go find something flat and sturdy, a board or something. Alpha Brandon could you call the hospital or clinic and let them know we are coming in?” She starts to feel over his extremities and is calling out to him. “What is his name?” she asks. “Frank.” I answer. And I notice the teens’ surprised faces. They must have thought I didn’t know this kid, probably due to him being a human. I notice the kid Miriam told to find a board or something start looking for one. I pull out my phone and call the pack hospital. We usually don’t treat humans there, but the humans only keep a clinic in town and its not really set up for emergencies. But this is our warrior Micah’s brother-in-law we’re dealing with here. If it affects his mate, it will affect him and their pup. I let the nurse that picked up, know what the situation is and tell them to be ready. When I turn back around Miriam has the teenagers at attention while her and the one other kid get Frank on what looks like an old and weathered board. Looks like the one of the ones we had to replace in the distillery warehouse where we keep the barrels. The other teens look like they want to walk away from the situation but Miriam’s command has them in place. My jaw goes slack at that. How did she do that? She’s not even a part of this pack, yet she commanded these wolves easily. One of the teens looks at me, “can we go Alpha?” he asks making it obvious he’s annoyed with being here. “What happened?” I ask him specifically, letting my alpha aura out to let him know I want answers. Just then, I recognize him. He is one of my father’s warriors’ son. His father continues to work for my father; as protection since dad cannot defend himself as well anymore because of his injury and Nathan and I also know he sends his trusted men out to scout and gather any new information about the attack that took mom from us. I also remember the rumors we’ve gotten about this kid, Jeffery, and his little group causing trouble in town and at the school. They’re a bunch of bullies apparently and have been getting away with making trouble thanks to who his dad is. All of this leads me to believe that Frank’s fall might not have been an accident. I see Jeffery steal glances with his friends. “I asked you what happened, pup!” “Nothing really Alpha, the guy was trying to keep up with us and jumped off the silo to try and impress us. That’s all.” He responds, his heart beating frantically. He’s lying, I know he is and my wolf can confirm it. “Alpha Brandon, we need to load him in the SUV.” Miriam calls out to me. I move to help her and the kid that’s been assisting her. I link some warriors while we make our way to the SUV to come for Jeffery and his group and keep them secure on the spot. I also link Tony and Nathan to let them know what the situation is. Miriam ran ahead of us and is preparing the back of the SUV, laying all the seats flat to fit Frank there. She starts talking to Frank as she climbs in the back with him. “This is going to be a rough ride Frank, but you’ve got to stay calm. Okay? You have a couple broken bones and we have to determine what the damage to your spine is. You’ll also have internal injuries, but we’ll do everything we can to help you and make you comfortable. Just keep a steady breath for me and you’ll be fine, concentrate on that for me.” I am driving as fast as can while trying to also drive as smoothly as I can, missing any potholes. I never imagined my day going like this. I know some weres have low opinions of the humans. But they know where the pack alphas stand on the matter. Daisy was a human and we accepted her as Luna of the pack and everyone else knew to fall in line or leave the pack. This accident will worsen the relations between the pack and humans. We were all already on edge because of what happened with Daisy. My phone rings and I answer it on speaker since I’m driving like a mad man. Its one the pack doctors. “Alpha, I don’t think it’s a good idea to bring a human into the pack hospital. He should go to the town clinic— “ “I didn’t ask what you think, I gave an order to be ready to receive him and that’s final” I say trying desperately to keep my cool. “But alpha, we’re not used to treating humans. Its too high of a risk.” He continues. I hear low growl from the back and I look in the rearview mirror to see Miriam fuming mad. “Be ready to take him doctor. You were trained in human universities; you are a professional or are you not?!” Miriam says and I feel a powerful force come from her being, making my breath hitch. “Y-y-yes. Of course I am, we’ll have everything ready but I will not touch the boy it’s too risky and I will not—” at that cut the call and glanced up at Miriam when I catch her eyes glowing gold, something I don’t think she was aware of. F***! Who is this girl? *************** When we arrive at the clinic there are two nurses waiting outside with a gurney. I pull the board with Frank on it out almost all the way and hold it while Miriam and the nurses transfer Frank and the three of them rush him inside. I jump into the SUV to move it out of the way when I get a mind link from one of the warriors guarding the teenagers. “One of them cracked like an egg, alpha. They were daring Frankie to jump and when he turned them down and went to climb down he was pushed. Though they all swear they didn’t mean to make him fall, they wanted to scare him. Micah found out and he had to be restrained. He wanted to come and deal with them himself. Alpha Nathan had to alpha command to stand down…” he continued. I finished parking and made my way into the hospital. First thing I noticed was the sour faces and crossed arms on most if not all the staff. “Alpha Brandon,” a young unmated she wolf walked up to me. “Who does that cheap wolf think she is? She’s nothing but a teacher and she came in here bossing us around and ordered us away from the patient. She needs to leave the hospital immediately, she has no right to come here and—” she stops her rant and submits to me after I growl at her having had enough of her idiotic complaints. “What’s Frank’s status?” I ask no one in particular. “That teacher and Randi and Paige took him to get tests done, alpha. The teacher was saying that they were the only ones allowed to treat the human or even be near him. We’re professionals, we would never harm a patient and she’s all but saying out loud that we would. Furthermore, she’s a teacher, not a doctor. She has no idea what she’s doing.” The doctor that called me about not wanting to accept Frank here for being human said. Dr. Kelly was an old timer that stuck to the old ways of running a pack. We were already a one-of-a-kind pack sharing land and a village with humans. But Dr. Kelly was always complaining about the humans and his words rubbed off on others at the hospital. I rubbed my hand down my face, having had enough of their ranting and complaining. One of the other nurses spoke up suddenly and shocked, “Paige just linked me. They need anesthesiologist they’re operating on Frank asap!” she shrieked. At that, we were all left speechless.
