Part 1: Chapter 3: Dormant

In the evening, Rieka and her husband were getting ready to go to bed. The lady was changing her clothes into something more comfortable while Malik was in the bathroom.

“Honey, I have a question,” he asks drying his hair with a towel.

“Does Josette have many dreams like these?” he continues.

“Why are you asking?” Rieka is confused.

“Just asking,” he tells her.

“Yes, she always has similar dreams but this is the first time she actually gets scared,” she explains and he nods.

“Don’t you think she needs help?” Malik suggests.

“Help?!” Rieka widens her eyes at Malik’s words.

“Malik, she’s just dreaming,” she protests.

“I didn’t mean to offend you. Josey is like a little sister to me I was simply worried,” he changed his words as soon as he sensed his wife’s tone.

After their chat, they turn off the lights and go to bed. As soon as Rieka closes her eyes, she is in a deep slumber, one she’s never had. She watches herself running in the woods as if she was running away from something or someone.

She’s scared but does not know why or how she even got here. Rieka felt the ground touching her legs which made her even more scared because a part of her still believed she was in a dream. A minute later, she falls on the ground and everything becomes black.

Rieka wakes up in the middle of nowhere, just like her dream, or so she thought. She started looking around but all she saw were trees everywhere. She gets up worried and searches for a way back to the palace. Suddenly, she hears cracking and thinks someone is there.

“Who’s there?” she speaks but no one answers.

The silence creeps Rieka so she starts to run in any direction hoping she doesn’t get caught by whatever is following her. She remembers Josette’s dream and couldn’t help but see the difference. There was none.

She’s living her sister’s nightmare.

The more she runs the more scared and lost she gets.

Rieka feels like the creature is getting closer to her but she was caught by someone else. She couldn’t see the person’s face as he had her pressed against him. She felt his heart’s rhythm and slowly calmed down.

She tried to look up but he wouldn’t let her. As soon as it became silent around them, the man took it as a sign that they were safe so he loosened his grip on the girl.

She looks up at him and widens her eyes.

“Ethan?” she says.

“I’m sorry, Rieka,” he speaks confusing her.

“Why are yo- “she feels a sting on her neck and in a matter of seconds, everything went black again.

- Ethan’s P.O.V –

I was in my workroom finishing up some stuff for the pack when I felt my heart beating faster. What’s happening?

“Luis, Luis come here,” I call my beta and he comes rushing.

“Alpha?” he sees me and the sweat dripping from my forehead.

“What’s wrong?” he asks and I shake my head.

“I don’t know. My heart started beating fast out of nowhere and I was… scared,” I explain thinking of what could’ve happened.

After a few minutes, my pulse went back to normal, but I felt a thud on my head.

“Ow!” I held my head.

“Ethan, do you think…” Luis says.

I look at him for a second and that was all it took me to understand what he meant.

“Have three beta’s search the woods, let’s go,” I said and rushed out of the palace.

I ran into the forest searching for her but I couldn’t find any trace. I needed her to wake up so I can sense her but for now, I continued to run.

Soon, I felt my pulse get stronger which meant she was waking up. I ran in her direction and found her trying to escape something. I looked behind her and it was one of the pack wolves trying to capture her.

I grab Rieka and pull her to my chest and soon she calmed down. I stared at the wolf and he bowed seeing it was his alpha. He turned his head and walked away in the opposite direction. When we were alone, I loosened my grasp and she widened her eyes when she saw it was me.

She was injured, that’s the thud I felt on my head, I had to take her back to the packhouse to heal her since her wolf obviously wasn't but I couldn’t risk showing her the entrance to the place.

“I’m sorry, Rieka,” I put a needle in her neck and a second later she was asleep in my arms.

I carried her to the packhouse and placed her on one of the beds. The pack doctor healed her wound and left after that, leaving me and Luis with her.

“Alpha, if she’s a werewolf how come she didn’t heal?” he asked.

“I don’t know, and I have a feeling she doesn’t know her true form either.” That was the only explanation.

“But why didn’t she react to the wolfsbane today?” he spoke.

“Maybe they kept her powers dormant and the wolfsbane triggered them,” I said.

“What do you mean?” Luis furrows his eyebrows.

“I think we mated, today at the coronation, we mated when we danced together,” I explained.

“And how will you tell her that?” he asks.

“I won’t have to, she’s my mate, she should feel it herself,” I said hoping I was right. After all, she doesn’t know she’s a werewolf.

An hour later, she starts waking up and I look at her from afar. She looks around and notices that she’s not in her room nor in the woods anymore.

“Where am I?” She asks with a dry voice.

“You’re in my palace,” I fill a glass with water and approach her.

“Drink this,” I give her the glass and she chugs it down.

“I don’t understand, how did I get here?” she asks.

“What do you remember?” I grab a chair and sit next to her.

“Not much, I remember running away from something, then I woke up from my dream in the woods and started running again. Now I’m here,” she recalls.

“You said you were dreaming,” I narrowed my eyes and she nods.

“Rieka, you weren’t dreaming, all of it was real,” I explain.

“How is that possible?” she looks confused.

“I have to tell you something,” I spoke realizing she knew absolutely nothing.

“You’re a werewolf and I’m your mate,” I said.

She looks at me with a straight face and suddenly, she starts laughing.

“Why are you laughing?” I ask her.

“A werewolf? You sound just like my sister,” she says.

What does her sister have to do with any of this?

“It’s not a joke, Rieka,” I say seriously and only when she sensed my tone, she stopped her laughter.

“Werewolves aren’t real, and what even is a mate?” she speaks.

I can’t believe her family robbed her of herself and hid the wolf in her.

“If werewolves are not real, how come I found you, how come you felt connected to me today?” I explain.

“That’s not true, I’m married,” she speaks.

That word angered me knowing she’s married to my enemy, the man who wants to find me to kill me.

When an Alpha king is killed, every werewolf from his line dies instantly, so if Malik captures me, he would have the power to kill every wolf in the Selene or as we call it, Crescent Moon.

“Rieka,” I start.

“I’m your friend’s wife. How dare you tell me such a thing,” she cuts me off.

“I’m not his friend,” I say.

“Malik is a hunter, he captures werewolves and kills them, he wants me too,” I explain hoping this could change her mind.

“Then how come you’re still alive,” she asks.

“Because he doesn’t know I’m the Alpha, he doesn’t know who any of us are. If he gets lucky and finds one mid-transformation, he captures them and kills them,” I explain.

“This is just nonsense. I want to go,” she tries to get up but I caught her before she lost her balance.

“Let me go,” she wouldn’t even look into my eyes, so I did as she asked.

Rieka started walking away and as soon as she opened the door, Luis came in. He bowed his head slightly and let her pass.

“Rieka,” I called her.

“When you get back, ask Malik about werewolves and watch his reaction,” I told her.

“Why would I do that?” she spoke.

“Just do it,” I approached her.

“And if you need me, go to the forest and scratch your arm with a knife. I’ll feel you and I’ll come to get you,” I gave her a small knife to keep with her

She looked at me for a second then rolled her eyes taking the piece of steel from my hand. When she was out of sight, Luis approached me.

“She doesn’t believe you?” he asked and I shook my head.

“Not one bit,” I answered.

“What are you going to do?” he asked.

“She’s my mate, Luis. I want her, she’s my Luna and I’m sure she’s going to realize that soon,”
