Part 2: Chapter 1: The Balance

- Ethan’s P.O.V - It’s been almost two weeks since Reika was officially declared Luna of Crescent Moon and to be honest she was fitting in rather fast. Everyone loved her and respected her already and not because she was my mate but because they actually felt close to her. There was one problem however, I did not mark her. Why? Because of a lot of things. I know I was the one who always brought up the mating but after I found out what this mark would do I chose not to go through with it. All these things about the Alpha king and the powers that come with it… it all seemed too good to be true. The full moon was close and the pack believes that now that Reika and I were mated, they won’t have to worry about it anymore. They think they have immunity against it when in reality, they still are very much vulnerable. I was currently seated by myself in the common room where I and my betas meet to discuss the pack’s issues. *flashback* “It’s called The Sin,” the witch said. “What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked approaching her once again. “You think you’re Alpha Kai’s descendant?” She smiles. “You’re not,” she said. “I don’t tolerate lying and I don’t care what your coven will think if I k*ll you,” I threaten her. “But I’m not lying my Alpha, witches aren’t allowed to lie,” she spoke. “Then who’s descendant am I?” I sat back down. “No ones. After what Alpha Kai did, the coven punished him by breaking his bond with the future cubs of the pack,” she explained. “And what did he do?” I asked. “He fell in love with a human,” she said and I laughed. “That’s impossible,” I said. “A wolf only mates with one of their kind,” I continued. “And if anything other than that happens it would break nature’s balance, I know,” she finished my sentence. “And us witches are supposed to make sure that balance remains. Which is why we did what we did with Alpha Kai’s pack,” she explained. “Let me tell you something, Ethan,” she spoke without honorifics. “After Alpha Kai mated with the human something unbelievable happened. He was able to grant his pack immunity against everything. In nature, everything comes and goes, but with this mating, this rule was broken, werewolves were becoming stronger and invincible. And above all that, the full moon no longer had an effect over them,” she explained. “With all that power, Kai started losing his strength. His human mate got pregnant around that time and gave birth to a girl. Of course, she’s a girl she couldn’t become Alpha, but with everything not making sense in Crescent Moon, the girl had her father’s powers. The only problem was that as a human, you don’t have the emotional attachment a wolf has to their partner, so she escaped with the child and married another… a king. Of course, Kai couldn’t take this loss so he eventually died,” she continued and I couldn’t help but start putting the pieces to the puzzle together. “The pack died with him. Want to know why? Because all their strength came from Kai, and the second he died their strength died with him. The coven tried to stop this but by the time we found a spell half of Crescent Moon was gone. So we broke the bond but couldn’t stop every generation from being very vulnerable,” she continued. “Where’s the daughter?” I asked. “They say that everything goes comes around,” she spoke in analogies. “Where’s the daughter?” I asked. “She’s the black wolf. She’s not Luna she’s an Alpha, her wolf was asleep for a long time and woke up. She is stronger than any other wolf and her finding her mate will begin the countdown to her life,” she said. “Her name means wolf queen,” she said. “Reika,” I whispered. “And if you love her, don’t mate,” she said. “What about the pack? They all believe that after I mate with her they will have immunity, what do I do?” I asked. “I do not have all the answered my Alpha, but your mark will activate the powers Reika’s father transmitted to her, that also means your mark will kill her,” she said. “But why? I’m a wolf too, she’s not altering with the balance,” I say feeling anxious. “She’s not 100% wolf, is she? That’s why w call it The Sin,” she told me. “And the balance is not to be overpowered because nature will find a way to take control again,” she continued. “Is there a way to keep that from happening? A way to stop her from giving her power to the rest of the pack?” I asked but she shook her head. “None that we know of,” she said. “So if I want her to stay alive… “ I start. “You make sure you don’t mate,” *end of flashback* “Alpha,” I hear someone say. “Alpha?” I hear once again. “Alpha, I’ve been calling you for a minute,” it was Luis. “What is it?” I asked. “The full moon is soon, what are we going to tell the pack when they find themselves shifting?” He asks. My Beta always knows everything that’s happening. Luis is like my right hand which is why I told him. Of course, Reika asked me a couple of times about the same thing a couple of times but I always avoided her question. She thinks she’s a Luna when actually she’s just like me, maybe even stronger. After what the witch told me, the pack is actually hers. “I don’t know, Luis. Should I tell the truth, they will think we’ve been lying to them about the immunity. This could make them lose respect for me,” I tell him. “They will find out eventually when the full moon starts to break their bones so telling them the truth could avoid a lot of suspicions after,” Luis said and he was right. I nodded. “Send me Reika,” I said and he bowed his head before leaving the room. A couple of minutes later, my mate entered the room and sat next to me. “You wanted to talk to me?” She asked. “I wanted to talk to you about something,” I start winning over her full attention. “I think it’s time to tell the pack that they don’t immunity,” I said. Reika stayed silent for a while then opened her mouth to say something. “But that would make them lose their respect for the both of us, you especially,” she said. “I know, but what will happen in two days when they start transforming in their homes and kill each other?” I asked. “We’ll have to hope they continue to be a part of the pack regardless. At the end of the day, I protected them for a very long time,” I told her. “Do you think that’s enough?” She asked. “I hope so. And if not, then did they ever truly respect me?” I said and she nodded. “I’ll support you no matter what,” she held my hand. “Although I don’t understand why you didn’t mark me, I’m hoping it’s a good reason after everything that’s happened,” she said. I do have a reason and that reason is to keep you alive. I held her hand as well and kissed her forehead. ****** The following day, I asked all my betas to announce that I had something to say so here we were, standing on my podium with Luis on my right side and Reika on my left, and the entire kingdom in front of me. “I’m sure you all have better things to do right now, however, what I’m about to tell you may come as a shock to all of you. I wished I didn’t have to stand here and say this but unfortunately, nature has its way of staying in control,” I started. “As we all know, I am supposed to be Aloha Kai’s descendant, and after mating, I was supposed to have the power to give you immunity, however, I talked with the witch of the coven and was informed that although this was true and not a myth, this would alter nature’s balance eventually destroying us,” I explained and no one said a thing. “So what I’m trying to say is that… tomorrow… we will all go to our caves and chain ourselves up because none of us have immunity,” and now the whispers began. “I know this wasn’t the news we wanted to hear but for my and your safety, keeping the balance is more important. Now I understand how this could change your view towards me which is why I chose to speak the truth, so I would like to give you the choice to either stay in Crescent Moon… or leave and become lone wolves,” I said. I finished my word and turned around and saw Reika staring at me. What I said last was not expected but I had to do what’s best for the pack. I couldn’t allow the werewolves who were against to continue to live amongst us. I was very fair but also very brutal. At the end of the day, I was still the Alpha. ****** At the end of the day, I was back in my room and I hadn’t spoken to Reika since my speech. Soon I hear the door open and she came in. “What was that today?” She asked. “I had to,” I said taking off my shirt. “No, Ethan, you didn’t have to tell them to leave the pack if they weren’t okay with what you said,” she spoke. “What, so it’s better if I kept the wolves that didn’t want to listen to us with us? We’re wolves Reika, yes we love each other and consider ourselves family but that doesn’t deny the fact that we’re half animals. That means we will do anything to survive even if that meant disobeying the Alpha,” I explained. “I thought disobeying the Alpha was not a choice,” she said sitting down on the bed. I didn’t answer. “Ethan, why didn’t you mark me?” She asked. “I told you I have my reasons,” I said without looking at her. “What are those reasons? Is it possible that you have another mate?” She asked. “What? Absolutely not,” I furrowed my eyebrows. “Then why?” She asked again. “Not now, Reika,” I said while walking to my side of the bed. “No, no you don’t get to sleep without telling me the truth,” she stood up and stopped me from getting under the covers. “Reika,” I looked at her. “Ethan, please. Stop lying to me,” she looked at me. I clenched my jaw and stayed silent. “Ethan speak already. I still remember all those days I went back home angry because we would fight over why I wasn’t mating with you and now that I’m here you refuse to mark me,” she started. “Because you’re the Alpha King,” I stopped her. “W-What?” She stuttered. “You’re Alpha Kai’s daughter. You have the power to make us all immune to the full moon because your mother was human and your father was an Alpha,” I continued. “I can’t do anything, you’re the real Alpha,” I said and sat down. “What does this mean?” She asked. “This means that Crescent Moon is yours,” ~ To be Continued ~
