- Reika’s P.O.V -
“Reika?” I heard my sister's voice.
“Josie,” I looked at her.
“I need you for something,” I spoke.
“What for?” She asked.
“I’m sure you know who shot at us tonight,” I started.
“And I need you to tell me who it is,” I tell her.
“I can’t tell you who it is, but I know it’s from Artemis,” she looked at me for a second before answering.
“Artemis?” I asked and she nodded.
“But, Malik is dead… right?” I asked feeling like there might be a possibility he’s still alive.
“Artemis is named after the god of death because they’re all killers, Reika. Just because Malik is dead doesn’t mean there’s no one else planning an attack,” she answered.
“And there’s no way you can tell us who it is?” I asked again.
“I can never see faces in my visions. I just know it’s them I saw when I meet them,” she responded.
“Even your mind control?”
“Even that. That’s why I could control Kratos alone. My brain had already recorded almost everyone’s face,”
I sighed and thought of what we could do then stood up.
“I wish I could bring you to the packhouse, but I am afraid of what the barrier would do to you,” I told her and she smiled.
“I have to go,” I said lastly and left.
I walked back to the packhouse and went straight to bed.
Of course, Ethan was already in bed but I knew he was not asleep. However, I decided not to bother him and went to bed as well.
******
The next morning, I woke up by myself in bed and couldn’t speak to Ethan at all during the entire day. I felt a little sad. It almost made me feel like what’s happening is my fault and maybe it was.
After all, if Artemis had a motive for revenge it would be Malik’s death.
I was currently in the common room talking with one of the wolves I befriended during the short time I’ve been here and although she still addresses me formally and everything I say comes out as a command for her, she is still sweet and enjoys time to time conversations with me.
“It’s just the idea of not being able to talk to him. We’re mates, we’re not supposed to avoid each other like that,” I tell her.
“Would you like me to go inform the Alpha about this?” She almost stands up.
“Talia,” I stop her.
“I’m not presenting you to do anything, we’re just talking,” I say and she smiled resting again on the couch again.
“I’m sorry, Luna,” she says.
“It’s Reika,” I correct her.
“Yes, sorry,” she apologizes again.
On second thought, I don’t think I’ll be able to befriend anyone here.
I’ll always be the Luna.
Suddenly, I spot Ethan coming in but doesn’t even give me a glance.
“Uh, Talia? I’m sorry I have to go,” I tell her then I leave.
I follow Ethan to the meeting room where his betas and he meet and closed the door.
“Luis, we-“ he started but stopped when he saw it was me.
“Reika, I’m busy,” he said.
“Busy? You’re always busy Ethan. No this is you avoiding me,” I spoke.
“Reika,” he tried to speak.
“Do you think all that happened is my fault? You think I wanted this many wolves to die?” I ask expecting an answer.
“No,” he answered but it didn’t feel like a no.
“Oh my god, you think I’m somehow involved,” I say.
I didn’t even have to listen to my wolf telling me he’s lying. I couldn’t hear it in his voice.
“Ethan I’m you f*cking mate. How could you think I did this? My own pack!” I say.
“Reika, please,” he said approaching me.
“Ethan, my mother blew up my kingdom so I could come here, I left everything to become your mate. Crescent Moon is mine as much as it’s yours, how could you think I’m to blame for what happened?” I raised my voice.
“Okay, fine. If I never came to your wedding I would’ve never met you or mated with you or became enemies with Malik making him suspect me. You’re not involved directly but all this always goes back to the center which is you,” he said.
For the first time in my life, I raised my hand and slapped someone across the face, but now I couldn’t feel nothing but the heat against my palm.
“I’m your f*cking mate. Not your fling, or girlfriend, or wife. I’m your mate,” I lower my voice while I stare at him with nothing but anger.
“I’m the Alpha of this pack. I wasn’t here since the beginning, yes, but if you ever think I had anything to do with this… directly or not… I swear I’ll reject you, Ethan, I’ll deny you as my mate and claim Crescent Moon,” I threaten him.
I turn on my heels to leaves.
“I thought you would never take it from me,” he said before I was out.
“I also never thought you’d think of me the way you did or avid me for it instead of talking to me,” I replied and slammed the door behind me.
******
That night, I was in our room first and was taking a shower when I heard the door unlock.
Ethan stood in front of me as I showered but I ignored his presence and continued my shower.
When I was done, I grabbed my towel and continued to walk out but Ethan pulled me back in.
“I want to talk about what happened,” he said.
“Now you want to talk?” I tilted my head.
“Reika, I don’t want us to go to bed mad at each other,” he spoke.
“You seemed perfectly fine with it last night,” I reminded him of last night’s situation when he completely left me alone with Luis and ignored me until I confronted him.
“I’m sorry for the way I was thinking,” he said.
“You know I could just forgive you right here right now, but that wouldn’t change the fact that you doubted me, Ethan, me,” I talked but you could hear my voice break.
“It’s my pack, Ethan. I know I don’t want to claim it as my own but it’s mine. I care about everyone, I feel connected to all of them,” I explain.
“I'm sorry but I can’t forgive you,” I speak.
“But we will find the b*tch who did this and we’re going to make him pay,” I look him in the eyes.
“We’re going to make him f*cking pay,” I repeat.
“Reika,” he said leaning against the sink of the bathroom.
“I love you. It doesn’t matter what I thought, I still love you,” he spoke.
“I never thought you stopped loving me,” I answered and he nodded.
I then left the bathroom and changed into my pajamas and went to bed.
******
The next morning, I learned from one of the betas that Ethan was having a meeting with the rest but didn’t tell me about it.
So what if did, was barge in without knocking and everyone looked at me with wide eyes.
“Reika, we’re in the middle of a meeting,” Ethan said as I sat at the other end of the table facing him.
“Exactly, one you didn’t invite me to,” I said.
“Luna’s don’t usually attend those kinds of meetings,” he said.
“So I’m just for parties and events where I simply smile and wave? I’m not this pack’s healer or gracious greater, Ethan. I’m the Luna. So whatever messed up plan your thinking of right now, I should know as well,” I said.
“Any objections,” I look at the betas in the room but no one opened their mouth.
“Great,” I nodded once.
“Now, what’s your plan,” I look at Ethan with a straight face.
******
Layer during the day, I was in the house’s library so I could learn more about wolves and Alohas in general.
I actually found an entire book dedicated to my father. It talked about the sin he committed, except they forgot to mention its name… me.
It was very interesting reading how despite everything he was respected for his powers and the immunity he provided.
It also said he eventually died but the reason was unknown.
I thought it’s because he lost his mate or his powers are him alive.
I don’t know, that entire part was a mystery to me and to the writers of this book apparently.
I came across a chapter in this same book that was even more interesting which made me think of a way we could solve this entire mystery. So, I took the book and went straight to Ethan’s office.
“Reika?” He looked up.
I walked to him and opened the book to the page I read before.
“What’s this?” He looked at the book then at me.
“My father’s journal,” I said.
“Your father has a journal?” He asked not knowing of the existence of this book.
“Apparently. This entire section of the book is him talking about what he knows, about mom and me, and his powers. I can’t believe no one read this before,” I said.
“What does it say?” He asked.
“It says the Alpha king is able to feel every wolf’s feelings after mating. Not just immunity, but what we have with each other too,” I said.
“That’s good why?” He asked.
“Because we can talk to every wolf about the incident and I’ll know who is lying or not,” I answer feeling like we’re one step closer.
“Yes, but that means you’ll feel everything they feel. Every time they touch the tip of a needle down to getting shot. If anything this is another reason for us not to mate,” he said taking us back to square one.
“Ethan we don’t even know the mating was the reason Alpha Kai died. They’re just rumors from people who wrote these books. I read three of them and each one has a different ending, this one doesn’t even have one,” I flip to the page.
“Reika, I’m not marking you,” he answered and looked at his screen once again.
“You’d be stronger, more immune, I could know and sense everything,” I said.
“You could also die!” He shouted.
“No, you understand? No!”
