“They’re coming,” a voice hissed urgently in the dark. “Who?” Elizabeth tried in vain to make sense of the darkness enveloping her. Moonlight slowly spread out around her, and she saw the eerie shapes of people walking along the street. Their steps dragged, their arms swung too slow, as though trapped in molasses. All the shops around them were shuttered; no life stirred within the boarded-up windows, nor did any light escape from beneath the thick black curtains. Colors blurred together into a range of blue and gray shadows until it hurt her eyes to try to see anything around her. “They’re coming,” that voice said again. Elizabeth rushed toward the nearest person she could find on the street. It was a man. She grasped his arm, pulling him to a stop. His feet ceased their restless shuff
