Chapter 1: Petals in the Rain
The rain came softly, like a lullaby whispered from the sky. Elara Bennett stood behind the counter of Petal & Promise, her fingers gently arranging a bouquet of soft pink peonies and baby’s breath. The scent of roses and lavender danced through the air, mingling with the faint aroma of cinnamon tea she’d forgotten on the side. Outside, the world blurred behind the foggy window—gray clouds hanging low, leaves trembling under the soft drizzle. It had been two weeks since her grandmother's funeral. Two weeks since she’d opened the shop again, not because she was ready—but because the silence in the house had become too loud. The little bell above the door jingled, delicate and hesitant. Elara looked up, brushing a loose curl behind her ear. A man stepped inside, his dark coat damp from the rain, his hair slightly tousled as if the wind had combed through it carelessly. He was tall, with soft brown eyes that scanned the shop like he’d stepped into a memory. Something about him made her pause—not in fear, but in curiosity. “I… um,” he said, his voice deep yet gentle. “Do you sell... flowers that speak without words?” She blinked, unsure if she’d heard him correctly. “I mean,” he added, clearing his throat, “a bouquet. Something… that says something, without me having to say it.” Her lips curled into a soft smile. “That’s what all flowers do.” He seemed relieved. “Then I’m in the right place.” She moved from behind the counter, walking to the nearest table filled with blooms in all shades of morning light. “Who is it for?” He hesitated. “Someone I haven’t met yet.” That made her glance at him again. There was something in his tone—melancholy, but not bitter. Like he was reaching out to something distant and tender. “Then it should be hopeful,” Elara murmured, more to herself than to him. Her fingers danced over the petals as she picked sun-touched chrysanthemums, soft violets, and a single white daisy. “And a little brave.” She tied them with twine and tucked a small dried forget-me-not in the ribbon. He watched in silence, the corners of his mouth twitching with the kind of smile people wear when they find something they didn’t know they needed. When she handed him the bouquet, his fingers brushed hers for just a second—warm despite the rain. “This is perfect,” he said softly. “Thank you.” She tilted her head. “Would you like to leave a note? Some people do.” He shook his head. “I’ll wait. The flowers will say enough.” With that, he left, the bell chiming behind him like a sigh. Elara stared at the door long after he’d disappeared down the misty street. She didn’t even know his name. But as she turned back toward her work, a single rose petal fell from the bouquet she’d been making earlier—quiet and soft, landing near her feet. And just like that, her heart whispered: Maybe today was the beginning of something. ---
