BENEATH HIS SHADOW
---
The night air was thick and electric, carrying a tension that made the hairs on Lydia’s arms stand on end.
She had insisted on training alone in the rooftop garden, under the Alpha’s watchful eyes, with Helena at a distance, ready to intervene. She needed to understand the pull in her chest, the burning silver veins under her skin, the unnatural sharpness of her senses.
And yet, nothing could have prepared her for the attack.
---
It began with a whisper.
A sound so soft it could have been imagined.
Then came the smell. Metallic. Acrid. Alive.
Before Lydia could react, shadows darted across the garden walls, faster than human sight could follow. A group of figures emerged from the darkness — tall, lithe, moving with impossible precision. Wolves? Humans? Both? Their eyes glowed faintly, amber like firelight flickering over steel.
Helena’s voice pierced the tension. “Rogues. From the old order. They know you’re here.”
Lydia’s pulse slammed in her ears. Rogues.
Not ordinary enemies. Not anything she had faced before.
The Alpha stepped forward instantly, his posture sharp, predatory. Gold eyes flaring. “They underestimate her,” he said quietly, almost to himself. “And that will cost them.”
One rogue lunged toward Lydia. She barely had time to react. Her instincts screamed — move, shift, fight.
And then it happened.
Her legs elongated subtly. Her teeth sharpened. Silver shimmered along her veins like liquid light. She didn’t fully shift. She didn’t even think about it. She just moved — faster than thought, faster than perception — dodging the rogue in a fluid, impossible motion.
The Alpha’s eyes widened, then narrowed. “Uncontrolled… perfect,” he muttered.
Lydia spun, instincts guiding her as rogue after rogue advanced. She could feel every heartbeat, every intention. Each movement was predictable yet alien, unnatural. She struck without thinking, sending attackers sprawling with her speed and strength. Bones cracked audibly beneath blows she didn’t fully comprehend giving.
One rogue froze, watching her. Its eyes flickered silver for just a moment before it hissed. “Impossible… she shouldn’t exist…”
“Exactly,” Lydia whispered, her voice low, resonant, vibrating with power. She realized the sound alone unsettled the rogues. They recoiled instinctively.
The Alpha stepped beside her, moving with lethal precision, his gold eyes now fully alert. He didn’t just fight. He guided. Every rogue she encountered collided with his strikes as though he were anticipating their moves.
But something was different this time.
The rogues weren’t ordinary. Their leader — taller, broader, more dangerous — stepped forward. Its gaze locked onto Lydia. And then it snarled, exposing elongated teeth.
“You are hers,” it growled, voice reverberating unnaturally.
“She?” Lydia asked, heart hammering.
The Alpha’s jaw tightened. “Not entirely mine,” he said quietly, his eyes on the rogue. “Not yet.”
The rogue lunged. Time slowed for Lydia. She could see every movement before it happened. Every intent. Every threat. And then she struck — a silver flash from her arm, energy radiating outward in a wave that threw the rogue backward like it weighed nothing.
The others faltered. They had never seen power like hers. Even the Alpha’s usual control seemed secondary to the sheer force of what she was unleashing.
Then came the revelation.
The leader of the rogue pack — the one she had thrown back — collapsed halfway across the garden. Its body shimmered and twisted unnaturally, and then… it split. Not fully human, not fully wolf, but something in between, unstable. And in that moment, it revealed a symbol burned into its chest — the same crescent-and-line mark Lydia had seen the first night she arrived.
Her blood ran cold.
“They… know you,” Helena whispered.
“They fear me,” Lydia muttered, voice trembling but strong. Her silver veins pulsed as she realized something terrifying — the rogue leader’s attack had inadvertently awakened something in her that even she couldn’t control yet. A power they feared.
The Alpha knelt slightly, eyes on the rogue’s symbol. “This was their trap. They wanted to test you. To provoke the awakening.”
“And I… passed?” Lydia asked, unsure if relief or horror should dominate.
“More than pass,” the Alpha said softly. He stepped closer, the tension between them thick, magnetic. “You survived. And you didn’t just survive… you dominated. The city hasn’t seen this in centuries.”
Her chest burned, not just from exertion. But from the knowledge that she had crossed a line — a line even he hadn’t expected.
Then, just as suddenly as the battle began, the rooftop went silent.
All the rogues had fled, leaving only scorched marks in the garden. The moonlight glinted off Lydia’s silver veins. Her heartbeat aligned with the city’s pulse — faster, stronger, commanding.
Helena stepped forward, pale but steady. “You are… everything they feared. The Alpha was right — not collateral, not subordinate. You are a force beyond any pack’s comprehension.”
The Alpha’s gaze locked onto her again, closer now, gold and silver merging in intensity. “And now… I know what you are,” he said.
She shivered. Not from fear. Not from cold. But from the realization that she had done something the world hadn’t seen in centuries.
“I… I don’t understand it yet,” she admitted.
“You will,” he whispered, stepping dangerously close. “And when you do… the balance of this city will change. Forever.”
The rooftop garden, once serene, now felt like the eye of a storm. And Lydia Ashford — sold, betrayed, hunted, awakened — stood at the center of it all.
The Alpha reached for her, his hand hovering near hers. “You’ve made history tonight,” he murmured.
Lydia’s pulse raced. Her silver veins pulsed brighter. “And if I can’t control it?”
His lips curved, dangerously close to a smile. “Then we learn together. And they will regret ever underestimating you.”
For the first time, Lydia felt the weight of her legacy — and the thrill of power she had never imagined.
The city below remained oblivious, but above, in the moonlight, a new order was forming. And Lydia Ashford… was at its heart.
