Chapter one: Coffee,Rain and Crashes
“She didn’t believe in fate. But fate clearly had a twisted sense of humor.”

It was supposed to be a normal morning.
The kind where Hailey Bennett would stroll to the café with her hoodie up, earbuds in, and notebook in hand, pretending not to notice how quiet her life had gotten. The kind where she’d order her usual—black coffee, no sugar, no smile—and claim the back corner of the shop to work on the novel she wasn’t sure she’d ever finish.
But this morning had other plans.
The rain had started without warning. Colorado skies didn’t care about weather forecasts or Hailey’s mood. She gripped her tote bag tighter and pedaled harder on her old blue bike, hoping to beat the storm. But as she swerved around a parked truck on the side of Maple Street, she didn't see the man stepping off the curb.
Until she collided with him full speed.
Everything happened in a blur—her bike screeched, her bag flew, and they both hit the pavement in a mess of limbs, muttered curses, and spilled coffee.
“Are you—” he started, brushing wet leaves off his flannel shirt.
“I’m fine,” she cut in, already pushing herself up. Her knee throbbed, and her pride felt worse.
He stood, tall and annoyingly steady, holding out a hand. “I meant... are you okay?”
Hailey looked up—and froze.
His voice. His face.
No. Freaking. Way.
“Chase Miller?”
His brow furrowed, then lit with a slow, crooked smile. “Hailey Bennett?”
Of course. Of course the universe would send her ex-high school rival-turned-small-town golden boy to break her fall. Of course he’d still look good — rain-slicked hair, warm brown eyes, and that smile like he’d just scored the winning touchdown.
She groaned. “I literally crashed into my past.”
