Chapter 1
The air was cool and dry. Although the winter hadn’t begun, the rains were receding fast and the air getting drier. king Louis a man in his early forties, huge and handsome was bathing after a very long and hectic day with the council and the maids were busy preparing dinner for the royal family Then all of a sudden a shrill, chilling cry came from queen Agnes quarter and for a moment every activity was stopped Fast call the king she has stopped breathing queen Agnes shouted at the top of her voice. It’s queen Agnes and her daughter again, said Hannah a fat sluggish woman who was know as the village gossip as hurriedly ran towards the palace, a small crowed has gathered outside the palace wanting to know what was wrong, as soon as Hannah arrived everybody and heard the news that the princess has fainted again she Hannah started crying all the other women who were outside the palace joined her as promptly as if hers was a signal, like the ringing of a bell. They wept earnestly as the moved forward as in one surge towards the large compound with an umbrella in the middle of it. They were not allowed to enter inside the palace. Queen Agnes was sitting on her bed with her daughter lying on her outstretched legs she was shaking her head and toes and weeping silently now as the palace maid move in and out of her chambers Princess moo has fainted while singing with her mother in her room, she suddenly sneezed thrice almost at once, told her mother she was feeling dizzy and then slumped onto the floor. Her mother Queen Agnes rushes to her side and gave out a shrill cry that brought the the maids and the other queens out of their chambers. King Louis hurriedly wore his rope and ran out of the bathing tub when he heard queen Agnes scream. He heard thought he would have a quiet with his family but princess has spoilt his evening again, it was becoming a habit with her these days to faint at nothing at all. What a curse it is to keeping having these cursed children, these children who kept coming into the world only to tease their parents or a while then die off. Well; he sighed. As he walked into the his chambers to wear his robe before going to queen Agnes chambers to know the cause of the commotion Princess moo lay quietly in her mother’s arms; out stretched and almost breathless as soon as the king enter the room queen Agnes stared crying again My king I am finished my only child wants to leave me I am lost my king she cried. Yes said Mary, ‘ why won’t she say she is lost? How can one woman be cursed with these wicked children that won’t stay? Why? She is lost, and I pity her!. Shut up the king shouted at her from where he bent over Moo. Is that how you pity her? Is it by asking her to feel lost and die that you help her? What have you done? She murmured something about having helped sprinkle cold water on the princess and then walked out of the room. The other women looked at her and hissed as she went out. That woman again said Hannah the gossip, she wants to see every woman’s child dead.with the knowledge that she’s a witch who will never have a baby of her own; there was a giggling from the other women and then one suggested. How can we tell that she didn’t eat up all her prospective children at the full moon witches conference hall, during the night?’ They were referring to Mary because she was childless and they called her a barren witch. There was more subdued laughter but this time, one of the women did not join. She looked hurt. The laughter was however short-lived because princess moo suddenly stretched out her hand as if frightened of some sight. Go away she yelled. Go away! Don’t come and take me O. Go away!’ She became quite again as though she had been the one who had just shouted. Queen Agnes gave a sigh of distress My queen said lady viola the village mid-wife,’ don’t worry anymore she will stay this time, she doesn’t want to go!’ But sobbed queen Agnes why do the spirit keep pestering her, why won’t they leave her alone?’ Well, thank you my people said king Louis, you can all go to you various houses and retire for the night. The princess is breathing well now now. She will soon be all right.’ The crowed soon stared despairing to the various houses. But two other women remained unmoved. The were queen Agnes’s mate, and senior queens of king Louis. Queen Ayesha the most senior queen, was a woman in her late thirties, who king Louis had married when she was only sixteen. They had been very much in love with each other the first year of their marriage. But soon after that, when there was no sign that a baby would come king Louis father insisted that he take another wife that will give him an heir. And that was how queen Hannan came into the family. Queen Hannan was a thorough spit-fire. Her main pride was that she owned the palace, she was the mother of the heir to the throne, her son prince Carson was young man of sixteen, her other children princess Anastasia a girl aged ten, Princess Victoria another girl aged five and prince phill another son aged one was all her children that the king could boast of aside princess Moo. Had queen Hannan’s two other children a boy and a girl not died two years ago, he would have been a father of seven. But he did not seem destined to father a legion, like his younger brother whose wife bore him ten children all nine boys and a girl. Despite the fact that Queen Ayesha had no child she was the king favourite queen and he is always unhappy whenever he found queen Hannan quarrelling with her. Queen Ayesha is a very quiet and loving woman but despite all the money all the money spent in treating her barrenness she still had no luck. That was why she found the joke of Mary’s barrenness rather sour. Almost thirty nine years old she had no child of her own. Queen Ayesha remembered on one occasion while she was outside watering her rose plant in her small garden she heard Queen Hannan shouting at princess Moo Moo!’ Queen Hannan called maliciously, so these papers are still here? Why haven’t you swept them you pig? I am not a pig !’ Moo replied insolently and hissed. Queen Hannan approached her and gave her a sharp slap on the back,’ do you think you can talk to me like that and get away with it? Fumed queen hannan fumed Moo gave out a piercing cry and ran to To queen Ayesha.
