The Fateful Contract
Nina Tran stood still before the massive door of the luxurious mansion. The evening sun painted the sky golden, casting shimmering light on the marble floor. But inside her, only darkness reigned. Everything had happened too fast, like an unending nightmare. Her family — once one of the most powerful clans — was now on the brink of bankruptcy. Sudden crises, baseless lawsuits, frozen accounts... all left them lost and nearly broken.
To hold on to the last remnants of honor and wealth, Nina was forced to accept a condition any twenty-one-year-old girl would refuse: a contract marriage with Lucian Han — the coldest and most fearsome man in the financial world.
She sighed softly, telling herself, "Just one year, Nina. Just one year to protect your family."
The mansion’s door creaked open, and Lucian Han stepped out. His eyes were sharp as blades, each step measured and steady. The black suit hugged his tall frame, making him appear even more commanding and distant.
“Come in,” his voice was cold and mechanical. “We start today. This marriage is a contract, not a love story.”
Nina lowered her head lightly, a learned reflex after countless moments of swallowing her pride. “I understand.”
She stepped into the luxurious space with gentle steps, the pale yellow lights casting a falsely soft glow. Each footfall echoed like a bell signaling an unpredictable life ahead — a world full of secrets, lies, and hidden dangers beneath the glitter.
Nina sat down on the chair near the living room window, her eyes vacant, staring at the darkening sky. Memories of the innocent girl she once was, cradled by her parents, had become distant. Now, all she could cling to was willpower — and a silent promise: to protect those she loved.
Lucian sat opposite her, his face emotionless like carved stone. He was a man who always controlled — not just multi-million-dollar contracts, but even his own feelings. For him, this marriage was just a part of a strategy.
“Do you know this marriage benefits both sides?” He held a glass of wine, his voice deep but cold. “I don’t want trouble. And neither do you.”
Nina didn’t take her eyes off the cooled tea in her hands. “I won’t disappoint you.”
He curled his lips into a slight smile. The answer surprised him but also made him wary. Women usually seek love, but this girl... there was something different.
After the tense dinner, Nina was taken to her room. Unlike newlyweds, there was no intimacy, no congratulations, no affection between her and Lucian. Just two strangers signing a paper — but it decided their whole lives.
Her room was fully furnished but impersonal. No flowers, no pictures, no personal marks. Just a space for a temporary resident. Nina stood silently in a corner, the dim light reflecting on her eyes, slowly moistening. Her breaths grew uneven as memories of her family flooded her mind — the house full of laughter, the golden sunlight on her father’s face — the man who once was a strong support for her and her mother. But now, all was fragile memories, broken like shards of glass at her feet.
Inside Nina, loneliness and the longing for love awakened pains never spoken. She wondered if life could give her another chance to start over, or if fate would forever imprison her in shadows of secrets and misunderstandings?
She sat by the window, gazing at the distant city lights, her heart in turmoil. “Does anyone ever dream of a moment like this in a wedding dress? For me, it feels like being sent to a battlefield.”
Her phone buzzed. A message from the family asset manager: “Debts have been fully paid. Shares remain. Your family is safe, Miss.”
A soft sigh escaped her lips. But peace didn’t last long before another message appeared: “Don’t trust him. Lucian Han never acts without purpose. Be careful.”
Her face turned pale. Who sent it? And how did they know so much?
At the same time, Lucian sat in his study, eyes fixed on the computer screen, fingers lightly spinning a glass of whisky. On the screen was Nina’s detailed file — childhood photos, academic achievements, family relations, and... an unknown note: “She is not just a pawn.”
Lucian frowned. He once thought this marriage was a simple exchange — but the look in her eyes, the first time she met his gaze, unsettled him. There was something deeper, nameless.
Night fell. The mansion sank into silence. But Nina didn’t sleep. She sat up straight, opened her laptop, and searched every piece of information about Lucian. Vague news, rumors about his b****y past, deals that made rivals disappear from the market...
“Am I living with a monster?” She swallowed hard. Then clenched her fist. “No. If he’s a monster, I’ll be the tamer.”
Not far away, Lucian stood by the window, his sharp gaze watching her, suspicion suddenly rising in his heart. He had caught a glimpse of Nina’s laptop screen lighting up with his information. But instead of reacting, he pretended ignorance, silently observing her every move. “She’s researching me,” he thought, “but what’s her real purpose?” Suspicion and curiosity intertwined, making Lucian unable to take his eyes off her.
That moment was like a milestone in their calculated game. Secrets slowly unveiled, and a life that seemed peaceful suddenly became more tangled than ever.
The sky outside was pitch black, and Nina’s future was no brighter. But one thing was certain...
This marriage would not go according to plan. And Lucian Han — the man who seemed to control everything — might be the first to lose his way in this game called... love.
