The sound of the slap echoed down the corridor. My head whipped sideways, the sting spreading across my cheek. For a moment, I just stood there, wide-eyed, shaking. Zamora's chest heaved, her eyes blazing with fury.
"What—" My voice cracked as I tried to speak. "Why did you—"
But before I could finish, the door beside us swung open.
Anna stepped out, blinking in confusion, her hair slightly disheveled from sleep. "What in the world is going on here?" she asked, her eyes darting between us.
I ignored the throbbing on my face and grabbed her arm, panic rising in my throat. "Anna, please—something's wrong with him! My husband is in pain, he—-he could barely breathe!"
