Chapter Fifteen
When Mark stepped inside the station, what hit him first was Gail’s empty desk. He dragged his gaze over to Carmen, who was sitting at her desk, her eyes on him as if waiting for someone to tell her what to do.
“Where is Gail?” he said.
She only pointed to the door that led back to the cells. Mark took in the chief’s empty office, then nodded as he closed the station door behind him. He tossed his keys and sunglasses on his desk, feeling Carmen tracking his every move. When he heard the squeak of the chair and glanced over, she was looking at the closed front door.
“Where’s your girlfriend?” she said.
Right now, he didn’t really want to address how everyone had been tossing out that title for so long, assuming he and Billy Jo were an item when, in fact, they were stumb
