Chapter Six After dropping off Billy Jo, Mark didn’t like the thoughts that plagued him. He knew and looked up to Gail, and he just didn’t understand how the story of abuse in her family could be true. He couldn’t make sense of the possibility that Gail, who was the buffer between him and the chief, could know something like that was going on right under her nose. The story couldn’t be true, because it would rock not just her world but her entire family’s. He was still uneasy, too, about the way Billy Jo had been looking at him from across the table.
