Chapter 1
Chapter 1
Dancing lights shimmered across a large pond. The hot sun glaring from above into the clearing that was nestled deep in the woods. A light breeze caused the tall evergreens to sway back and forth. The serene silence was interrupted by laughter ringing through the air. A young girl toppled forward, her blonde hair whipping around her face. Her short legs weren't able to move fast enough. A boy a few years older followed closely behind her, tapping her roughly when he finally caught up.“Tag! You’re it, Davina!”
“Not fair, Isaac! You didn’t give me a head start.” She pouted and forced her eyes to water, knowing it helped her get her way.
“You’re no fun!” Isaac frowned at his little sister. His sandy brown hair was plastered to his forehead with sweat which he roughly pushed back.
“Kids, enough arguing.” A tall, slender man said, emerging from the brush and into the opening, “let’s get settled down so we can eat.”
The two stopped bickering and walked over to their parents, their mother emerging only a few seconds after their father. She was also tall and slender, a common trait among wolves. Young Davina could've been her clone, if her blonde hair was only a few shades darker. Isaac grabbed the blanket from his mom and pulled his dad towards the pond to find the perfect spot to lay it out. Davina grabbed her mother’s free hand, swinging their arms as they followed. The small family settled on the large checkered blanket around the wicker picnic basket. Their mother absentmindedly set out their lunch as she looked around the clearing. Davina had just finished eating and was absentmindedly looking around when everything went black, “mom! dad!” She cried out in fear. She heard her father let out a ferocious growl as she felt around blindly. Her mother pulled her into her arms, cradling her before turning over and shielding Davina from any harm.
“Davina, stop!” Isaac yelled, confusing Davina, who held tight to her mother. Tears were streaming down her face as felt as her mother ripped away from her. She yelled out, trying to find someone to help her. She crawled on her hands and knees, searching desperately. A splash of warm liquid doused Davina, causing her to yell out again in fear. She curled herself into a ball, too scared to move anymore. “Davina, what did you do?” Isaac sobbed.
“Isaac,” she sobbed, “what’s going on?” She heard loud paws thundering towards the clearing, their pack coming to their aide after receiving a quick mindlink from their father. The blackness slowly began to fade, her vision finally returning. She sat up and looked around, sniffing through her tears. The picnic blanket was torn to shreds and covered in blood. The same blood she was drenched in. Isaac was looking at her in horror as he told the alpha how she turned into a wolf and killed their parents. The warriors turned to her in disgust. Her sobbing picked back up, she was only six, she didn’t even have a wolf. How could she have hurt her parents?
“Davina, what do you have to say for yourself?” Alpha John boomed. He was a large man and at that moment was extremely intimidating to young Davina.
“I didn’t do anything,” she continued to sob…
Present day
Thunder clapped loudly from above, causing Davina to abruptly wake. Groaning, she stretched her sore body before sitting up and rubbing her sleep-ridden eyes. She silently thanked the loud thunder for waking her from a recurring nightmare she'd had since she was six; all she could ever remember was cold, black eyes staring out of the dark woods. She looked at the old clock situated on a makeshift night stand. It was just past five in the morning. She thought she might as well start her daily duties now, then maybe she could retire a little earlier tonight.
Davina was on her hands and knees later that evening, scrubbing the mud-trodden floor. Soaked through to the bone from the earlier rain with tinted blue lips. The cold tile floor, bruising her bony knees. She was lost in thought, thinking about the day she'd be able to leave this horrible place she called home when she felt a sudden sharp pain in her side. Davina collapsed onto the floor and looked up to see Victoria and Leanne laughing. "Move, mutt!" Victoria hissed after she'd kicked her in the side while walking by. Davina turned back over onto her knees and began scrubbing the floor again, attempting to ignore the two. “Hey, I’m talking to you,” Victoria shrilled, as she kicked her again. Davina fell to her side again, clutching her broken ribs. She sucked in a shaky breath, trying not to cry in front of the two. Victoria threw her blown out bleached hair over her shoulder and crossed her arms, puffing out her full chest which guys drooled over. She currently had the alpha’s son in her sights, clinging to him any chance she got. He’d let her hang onto him at social events and, in turn, he had a warm body to keep him company at night. He didn't take their "relationship" seriously though, knowing Victoria was not his mate and was not fit to be the next Luna. The two walked away, laughing. Davina felt a tear escape, rolling down her cheek.
“Here, sit up,” a voice whispered to her and a pair of strong hands pulled her up. Davina opened her eyes to see a pair of concerned, hazel eyes staring back at her. They belong to her only friend, Lane. He and his parents were the only ones that have shown her any kindness since her parents' death. Davina sat up slowly, holding her breath and only breathed out once she was against the cold brick wall. Lane handed her a plate of food, which she scarfed down hastily.
“Is it your ribs?” Lane asked, noticing Davina was breathing with difficulty.
“Yes,” she whispered, “I should be okay in a few days.”
“I’m sorry,” he whispered, “I wish there was something...”
“You’ve done enough,” Davina stopped him, “you’re kind when no one else is. You feed me while they watch me starve. I know you can’t be found helping me, so trust me. This is enough.”
“It’s not enough, I need to do more, say something….”
“You’re in line to be the next gamma. You can’t. I understand.” Davina said with a sad smile.
“You need to rest.”
“I’m almost done cleaning, then I will.”
Lane nodded his head and left before anyone else could walk in. Davina finished scrubbing the floor then headed back to her room, a dark corner of the basement in the pack house. A small cot was pushed in the corner with her dresser across, creating a small wall which blocked her from anyone making their way into the basement. She pulled off her soaked rags and slipped on her ratty nightgown. Davina laid on her good side facing the cold, cement wall and thought back to the worst day of her life. Her father was the beta at the time. Their family had gone out to the lake for a picnic where they were attacked by a group of rogues. Her mother sheltered her as her father tried to fight them off. Davina had curled into a ball out of fear, blinded by darkness and unable to see anything but could feel when her mother was ripped from her. They left Davina and her brother unharmed, covered in blood, and without their parents. When Alpha John found her, there wasn’t any scent of the rogues and, from her brother’s testimony, accused her of murder on the spot. She was only six then and hadn’t even had her wolf yet. Her brother, who was nine at the time, even blamed her. She couldn't understand why he said she killed them. Ever since she’s been treated as a slave. She’s constantly tortured and starved. She replayed the incident, constantly, to try and understand what had happened that fateful day. Every night it was the same nightmare and she was still unable to piece it together. The only kindness she received was from the gamma family and they kept that a secret. Her brother tended to ignore her, not joining in on the abuse, but didn’t try to stop it either. Davina cried herself to sleep not understanding how her life ended up here.
