Kael, a 22-year-old hitman with a rare shadow-walking ability (teleporting through darkness), is blackmailed by a sorcerous crime lord to kidnap Princess Elyra, who possesses dormant starfire magic. The lord threatens to kill Kael’s younger sister unless he delivers Elyra, whose magic can power a world-destroying ritual. Elyra, 19, flees her kingdom to avoid a forced marriage to a tyrannical warlock king. When Kael tracks her, he finds her cornered by bounty hunters and, moved by her defiance, saves her instead of abducting her. Forced to travel together through a monster-filled wilderness, their mutual distrust sparks into a f*******n romance, complicated by the magical bond forming between their shadow and starfire powers. As the crime lord’s deadline looms, Kael must choose between saving his sister or protecting Elyra, whose awakening magic could either save or doom the world.

Shadows Of The Hunt
Kael melted into the shadows, his blade cold against his palm, but the thought of his sister’s life in the sorcerer’s chains burned hotter than any mark he’d ever taken. The forest was a labyrinth of moonlight and thorns, its silence broken only by the distant howl of a nightwolf. His shadow-walking gift let him slip through darkness like water, unseen, untouchable. But tonight, the weight of his mission anchored him to the earth. The sorcerer-lord Varkis had been clear: bring him Princess Elyra, the starfire-blooded heir of Valoria, or his sister Lila would pay. Kael’s jaw tightened as he pictured Lila’s tear-streaked face, her twelve-year-old frame shivering in Varkis’s obsidian dungeon. One week. That’s all he had before the sorcerer’s blood curse drained her life. Elyra’s magic, Varkis claimed, could fuel a ritual to shatter kingdoms. Kael didn’t care about kingdoms. He cared about Lila. He crouched behind a gnarled oak, his black cloak blending with the night. His mark was close—Elyra, the runaway princess who’d fled Valoria’s palace to escape a marriage to Warlock King Draven, a tyrant whose dark magic choked the realm. Whispers on the wind said she was headed for the Free Cities, but Kael’s sources—thieves and spies who owed him favors—pinned her to this forest. Alone. Vulnerable. A twig snapped. Kael’s senses sharpened, his shadow-walking tingling like frost in his veins. He slid into the darkness, reappearing ten paces away, silent as a specter. There—by the river’s edge, a cloaked figure stumbled through the underbrush. Elyra. Her hood was down, revealing auburn hair that caught the moonlight like fire. Her breath came in sharp gasps, her emerald eyes darting for signs of pursuit. She was younger than he’d expected—nineteen, maybe, with a fierceness that didn’t match the delicate gowns of court. Kael’s fingers tightened on his dagger. One swift move, and he’d have her bound, delivered to Varkis by dawn. Lila would be free. But something held him back. The way Elyra clutched a stolen sword, too heavy for her untrained hands. The defiance in her stance, despite the tremble in her legs. She wasn’t just running from a marriage—she was running for her life. A low growl rumbled through the trees. Kael froze. Elyra spun, her sword raised, as three bounty hunters emerged from the shadows, their blades glinting with enchantments. Draven’s men, no doubt, sent to drag her back to his altar. Their leader, a scarred brute with a fire-rune tattoo, sneered. “Princess, you’ve made this too easy.” Elyra backed toward the river, her voice steady despite her fear. “You’ll have to kill me before I go back to that monster.” The brute laughed, advancing. “Draven wants you alive. Your magic’s worth more than your corpse.” Kael’s mind raced. If the bounty hunters took her, Varkis’s deal was off—and Lila would die. But if he intervened, he’d blow his cover. His shadow-walking pulsed, urging him to act. Damn it. He couldn’t let them have her. He stepped from the darkness, his form coalescing like smoke. “She’s not yours to take,” he said, voice low, lethal. The hunters whirled, blades raised. Elyra’s eyes locked on him, wide with suspicion. “Who the hell are you?” the brute snarled. Kael didn’t answer. He shadow-walked, vanishing and reappearing behind the brute in a heartbeat. His dagger found the man’s throat, a clean cut, and the hunter collapsed. The other two lunged, but Kael was already gone, slipping through shadows to strike again. One fell with a blade in his chest; the other screamed as Kael’s shadow-wreathed fist broke his jaw. In seconds, it was over. Elyra stood frozen, her sword still raised, staring at the bodies. Then her gaze snapped to Kael, sharp as a blade. “You’re no hero. Why save me?” Kael wiped his dagger, his heart pounding. Up close, she was striking—freckles dusting her cheeks, eyes blazing with a fire that wasn’t just fear. He should’ve bound her then, dragged her to Varkis. But her question cut deeper than it should’ve. Why had he saved her? “Does it matter?” he said, stepping closer. “You’re alive. For now.” Her lips parted, but before she could retort, a pulse of heat flared between them. Kael staggered, his shadow-walking sparking wildly, like it was answering something. Elyra gasped, clutching her chest, where a faint glow flickered beneath her cloak—starfire, dormant but awakening. Their eyes met, and for a moment, he felt her—her fear, her fury, her heartbeat—through a connection he couldn’t explain. “What… was that?” she whispered, stepping back. Kael’s throat tightened. A magical bond. Varkis hadn’t mentioned this. It could complicate everything—or make Elyra’s power even more dangerous. He forced his voice steady. “Stay close, princess. Draven’s not the only one hunting you.” She narrowed her eyes, gripping her sword tighter. “I don’t trust you.” “Good,” Kael said, turning to the forest, his mind a storm of guilt and duty. “You shouldn’t.” But as they vanished into the trees, the bond pulsed again, a thread of shadow and starfire tying them together. Kael didn’t know if he was saving her or dooming them both—but for the first time, he wasn’t sure he could hand her over to Varkis.
