Chapter 1: "Pretty"
Sierra's Pov
“You're elegant.” He said as he kissed me again.
He was obviously drunk but I didn't care. He held a strand of my hair and tucked it behind my ear.
He slowly removed my dress.
The air in the room smelt like it was alive.
“Are you sure?” He asked me.
I just nodded.
He put his hands in mine, they were cold, but they fitted into mine perfectly, he kept on looking into my eyes like he could see my soul.
When the night was over, we just stayed cuddled up, staying in that position as he caressed my legs.
I was breathing fast, clenching my thighs together.
“You're just a bab-”
“Mommy, wake up, let's play hide and seek” I heard a little voice say.
I blinked my eyes open, it was Katie, my baby girl.
“You now show up in my dreams, great.” I whisper under my breath and roll my eyes.
I was wet beneath. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, and ushered Katie to the bathroom to get her ready for school before I went to the bakery.
The images from that night just kept on replaying in my mind, like it was yesterday, silly me, six years ago. If only I had resisted I would have been somewhere different. If only. I looked at my Katie and smiled because at least she came out of that night.
After I dropped Katie off at school, I walked down to my bakery to resume for the day. I had just finish baking my first bread when she came in, Jasmine. My best and only friend.
“Are you just going to stand there or run and give me a hug?” She asked sarcastically.
“Go away.” I say laughing.
Jasmine had been my only friend before I had Katie, when I had Katie and till now, she was fierce and had supported me through every phase of life. When she saw I hadn't sold any bread for the day, she bought one, she did anything to make me happy.
We chatted for a while and then she had to leave for work.
“Two loaves of bread please.” A customer said.
“Coming” I answered from the back.
When I came to the front, I was stunned. Whoever this woman was , she was beautiful, she didn't look like she would come to a local bakery here when she could go to other fancy restaurants. I didn't know the brand of clothes she wore, but they looked expensive. Everything about her was gorgeous that I just stood there gaping and staring at her in awe. Sometimes I think of myself to be dressed like this but then I look at my sales and stop being delusional.
“Pretty, would you give me the bread please?” She said bringing me back to reality.
“I'm sorry, you just look so… good.” I said.
“And your bread is the best in the area, pretty.” She said and smiled.
She paid me excess, even when I said that it was much, she insisted. She said she would come back again more often. The money she gave me was enough to cover this months rent so I wouldn't have to deal with the landlord.
Evening came and I paid the tip into my cash app and went home, Jasmine had promised to pick up Katie, but when I got home, they weren't there. I started panicking I looked at my phone and I had five missed calls from Jasmine and a text message saying they were going to the amusement park and that I should come join them because they'd be waiting for me.
I ran down there and saw them in a slide. I was grateful for both of them in my life, I couldn't afford to loose either of them.
“Okay that's enough for today girls.” I said walking up to them.
“Awww mum, pretty please.” Katie said holding my hands and giving me puppy eyes.
She knew it always walked for me.
“Yes mummy, pleaseee.” Jasmine said pouting and then we both started laughing.
“Mummy is just joking, but there's a limited time you know-” I was saying and cut mid sentence as Katie screamed “yay” and went back to the slide.
After an hour Katie was dizzy, so we decided to go home, Jasmine insisted wmwe stopped for a milkshake and she offered to pay even when I had insisted.
As we got home, I put Katie in bed and was about to tell Jasmine about the beautiful woman who came by the shop earlier, but then I realized my phone wasn't with me, I must've dropped it when we stopped for milkshakes. Jasmine was sleeping over, so I went back to get it, when I got there, I didn't see my phone. I couldn't afford to get a new one, phones were expensive now these days and the money I had saved was for the bakery's rent.
“No, no, no, Sierra think.” I kept whispering to myself.
“Any problem dear?” The waiter asked me.
“Uhm…” I hesitated first, then I spoke.
“Did you buy chance see an iPhone in this table here, with a black pouch?” I asked him.
“This?” He asked showing me my phone in his hand.
I thanked him and collected my phone, I was walking back home because I had forgotten my purse. I began window shopping, I saw doll Katie said she wished she had, I closed my eyes and smiled imagining her face if I bought the doll for her.
“Snap out it already.” I told myself, reminding myself of my situation.
His face flashed through my memories again making me remember what happened this morning. I just shook my head like the memory would go out.
As I kept on walking, I just kept imagining myself in places I would love to be, and Katie in a mansion being the princess she always has been. Then cold water splashed me. It was a speeding car.
“Damn it asshole!” I shouted.
The car reversed like they had heard me. I stood there.
“Don't you have eyes?” I ask, dusting the dirt away from my shirt. I could hear the glasses wind down.
“Oh, I wouldn't say that, pretty.” The lady from the car said.
My jaw dropped.
