The Angst of Zefora
" I don't know, mom. I hope it works." I sighed with distress. If there is something we're both afraid to do, it's this—using mom's ability. All I can hear is the soft whistle of the cold thin air from the trees swaying above us and the palpitating pulse of the lake that calms me down. The grass I walk on with my bare feet tingles, yet I feel like I am connected with this strange immense feeling of home with nature. I sat down as instructed. "Reis, honey. When you can't handle it anymore, shout out the words I just said and I will stop it." She smiled and placed two of her fingers on my forehead; She marked two circles and printed a thumb. "Revela ei quod ex praeterito vidi!" I collapsed. "I think my wa-" "I see it's a-" Tapping the floor and searching for something to hold, I found myself seeing what I was not supposed to see. It's weird. Is this what they call colors? But it's distorted and I don't seem to find a solid figure. I hear two voices and I can identify one, which is from my mom. Then, it suddenly depicted a clear vision. "Wow!" I whispered in amusement. I'm in a small space. I presume this is what a room looks like. There are two small figures on the wall on a frame; a big bed with a thick cover; small drawers and a big cabinet. I can identify those even when I'm blind, because mom taught me names of things I used to touch while I was growing. I can picture out what it's like. *door creaks from behind* "I think my water broke. Okay, Fieta, breathe in... breathe out." she urged while trying to calm herself in her state. "Fieta?" I glanced in the direction where the familiar sound came from and I saw a woman in a pink floral dress. A kindred spirit aroused from her aura. That's definitely my mom. I am so stunned to speak and I can't hold back my tears. I took a step forward and tried to reach her, but she was intangible. "Mom?" I asked in a c***k voice. Right, this is mom's vision and all I can do is see it without having to touch it. She is beautiful and her presence is so calming. No wonder why people say she's a godsend creature, primarily, because she looks like one. But her stomach is big and she's holding it firmly while struggling. "Remi! I need your assistance!" she opens the drawers, searching for something. I can't identify why she is struggling and it worries me. I can feel the pain depicted in her eyes. Shortly, the ambience changed and an orange hue slowly crawled on the edge of the room near the door. A figure appeared. I am confused by the setting and all I can do is watch from afar. *soft cackle* Mom glanced behind and her eyes widened. She is frightened by what she saw. Her lips moved a little and she whispered something while moving her fingers slightly. The figure suddenly disappeared and moved to my mom an inch away. It is a woman in a satin white dress with unusually colored cheeks and wavy hair. She's as pretty as mom but not with her energy—it's full of anger. "I'll be here, peacefully. You've got nothing to worry about, Fieta." she touched mom's stomach and her eyes switched to another color that I cannot identify. "I see it's a boy. Oh, so delicate. Fieta, I left a gift-" The ceiling cracked a bit and the floor shook for a second. "What gift are you talking about, Zefora?! Remove it or else-" "Or else what? Cast a spell and wish I never existed? Come on, go on." Zefora inserted. "-you don't know what's coming ahead of you. I have no time for your angst." exclaimed mom as she distanced herself. "Oops, I'm afraid I might've sent the wrong one. Maybe not a gift, but a curse? *laughs loudly* Sorry, I cannot stop laughing. How can someone like you not get any protection? Where's Remi, darling, he's late!" Zefora uttered in a sarcastic tone. I knew by then why mom had a big stomach. "That's what pregnancy looks like." I whispered in the middle of the commotion. Mom is in her labor obviously carrying me and not my sister. So I amn't born with a curse, instead, I am cursed by Zefora. This is the truth that mom hid from me for 21 years. And the fact that this was the time my dad wasn't anywhere else to be found until now. I can't express enough empathy about how hard it was for my mom that time. "He'll be here. I promise that-" "What if he's gone for good?" Zefora interrupted with a disturbing question that my mom burst into tears in her disbelief. Mom rushed to her drawer and lifted a glowing stone. "How can you say that? Take it back!" Suddenly, quickly, Zefora flicked the stone out of mom's hand. "No use, dear. Don't waste it on me. And oh, you sent Reis here..." she slowly looked over her shoulder in my direction. Frightened by what she said, I moved back a little. "You shouldn't see things. I see your mom put her vision on you." she crossed her fingers and laid a thin wall of air. Her facial expression changed and all I could see was her anger. "Do it a little more and you'll see why your father disappeared." The thin layer gradually grew and covered my entire body. After it closed in all spaces, it grew smaller until it crawled into my airways and I couldn't breathe anymore. I am panicking and all I can think of is how I can survive this. Suddenly, I remembered what mom told me to speak, in case something went wrong. "Fieta, I am done with this vision!" I shouted at the top of my lungs. I am back to reality. My eyes are filled with tears and I slowly open them hoping to get my vision, yet I still see nothing. My mom rushes to hug me and I can hear her sobbing. "My son, I am so sorry." *thunder rumbles* "Hold my hand, it'll be raining soon." she tightly gripped my hands and we walked slowly towards our house. As we were walking, I just couldn't stop thinking about having to see the world one day. "It's beautiful to see colors, mom."
