Chapter 20

"Ahh!" Pearl suddenly cried out as she hunched over in her seat and the car swerved off the road. I rushed to grab the steering wheel to get the car back in control just before we hit the tree. "What's wrong?!" I yelled in panic as she screamed again, this time her hands going to her stomach and her legs slamming on the breaks. "It hurts!" She screeched as she went to grab the door handle and kicked the door open, "help me!" She yelled, her voice high pitched and pained. "How?!" I asked in panic as I rushed to her side and tried to hold her, to offer some comfort, but she just pushed me away and shrunk further into a ball. "Help me, Diamond!" She repeated, her voice causing my heart to pick up speed. I frantically ran my hands through my hair as I looked all around us, seeing nothing but trees and empty road as far as the eye could see. "Somebody, help!" I yelled in a fruitless attempt to call for help from anyone as I rushed back to the car and rummaged through it to see if there was an emergency phone or anything that could be of help. "We don't have a phone!" I stressed as I heard Pearl scream even louder. "Diamond please!" She sobbed as she writhed on the floor, her screams piercing through the silent air. "Help!" I cried out as I ran to the tree lines, thinking maybe I'd see something there. "Can anybody hear me?!" I pleaded to anyone that can hear me, "Pearl!" I rushed to her side when I saw her choking and then she threw up, gagging and gasping. "Pearl!" I heard another voice yell. Before I could even turn my head in the direction of the voice, the person was already besides me, holding Pearl in his arms. "Let her go!" I fought as I tried to beat Isaac with my fists as he held my sister in his arms but someone held me back. "Let me go!" I exclaimed as I tried to hit Artur with the back of my head, but he managed to get me still in his arms as he dragged me back, away from my sister. "Get your hands off my sister! Don't hurt her!" "Diamond, Diamond," Arthur spoke harshly into my ear, "he won't hurt her." "Get your hands off me," I said through gritted teeth as I flailed my arms but he was much stronger and in no time he had his arms wrapped around my body, keeping me still and weak in his arms. "He won't hurt her," he repeated, much softer this time, "see." I looked up to see and indeed, Pearl had stopped screaming. She laid limp in his arms, her head placed on his shoulder as he held her body up bridal style. "Wai- where are you going?" I asked, my heart picking up speed as I saw him walk back to my sister's car, "get back here! Isaac! Stop!" "Diamond he's not going to hurt her! He's taking her somewhere where she can be safe!" "No! Arthur let me go with him!" I fought as Arthur did the opposite and instead held me closer and started to take slow steps backwards. I watched Isaac get into my sister's car, literally reverse and make a u-turn to drive down the road, back to New Cresthill where Pearl and I were trying to escape. "Let go of me!" I exclaimed, finally free as I turned around in his arms and tried to slap him, "get away from me, you- you- monster!" Arthur sighed as he ran his hand through his hair, "Diam-" "D-don't you dare say my name," I warned, hating how I loved the way my name rolled off his tongue. "I need to tell you the truth." "You think?!" I gasped, "you turned into a big dog-" "A wolf." "A dog, and then y-y-you start fighting with Isaac who turned into another big dog-" "Wolf." "And then my sister was crying and screaming, and I just want to know what the f**k is going on!" I let out in a frenzy before I stood there heaving, unable to breathe, "what's going on?" "I didn't want you to find out like this, Diamond, but now that the cat's out of the bag, I must tell you." I crossed my arms and tapped my foot, "the sooner you start, the better. What are you?" "Can we at least sit down?" He suggested as he pointed at the hard ground and I glared at him. "Sit down?" I repeated, "sit down?! You want me to sit down?!" He paused, his eyes looking over my facial features, "uh...I guess not." "Can you just talk?" He held up his hands, "ok, I'll talk. I'm a werewolf, Diamond." "What's that?" "A person who has the ability to turn into a wolf..." "You don't sound very sure." "I'm sure, I think. Ok sorry, I'm not in the right state of mind at the moment and I'm not alone in my thoughts so I don't know how I'll be able to carry on this conversation. Can we please not talk out here in the open? I'd rather we go back and -" "Oh no," I shook my head, scoffing, "oh no, I'm not going back to New Cresthill. Never!" "No harm will come to you. I promise you that, Diamond. In that way, you can see your sister, and then after that you and I can sit down and have a lengthy conversation. In fact, Isaac and Pearl will be included and I can tell you the whole truth." I looked around me, turning to see where I could go to, I didn't care for his explanation. I just needed to get out of here, but I couldn't leave without Pearl. "Where have you taken my sister?" I accused him as I frowned at him. "She's gone to the pack doctor, that's where Isaac has taken her." "What's that? What's a pack doctor?" "It's a doctor who deals with wolves, like...uh...you know because Pearl is pregnant, so only a pack doctor will know how to help..." He took a step towards me and I took one back, "I can't tell you this right now. It's a lot to talk about, and we're wasting time. The sooner you go back with me, the sooner you see your sister-" "And the sooner I can leave," I finished for him as I uncrossed my arms, "I don't care for your explanations or reasonings or whatever the hell you want to call it. How are we going to go back to New Cresthill because your genius ass let Isaac drive off with my sister's Bentley?" He moved his shoulders and then bounced once on the spot before looking at me, "you've ever rode on the back of a wolf?" He asked me and I blinked, my silence acting as my confirmation and he chuckled before covering it up with a cough. "I've learnt one thing today," I mumbled to myself as I took a step back and started walking down the road, refusing to ride on the back of that man, "and it's that there’s a first for everything," I finished. I'd rather walk a thousand miles in my designer heels which were completely destroyed, than ride on the back of a wolf that can turn into a man or is it the other way around?
