Cassandra grew up with a single mother who worked harder than anyone she knew to provide for her child. Her mother’s sacrifices were endless, and she, in turn, wanted to give her the best support she could in return. So, when her mother introduced her to the man she loved, she didn't argue. Instead, she supported their relationship, hoping for her mother’s happiness. Their love eventually blossomed into a marriage announcement. The day before her mother's wedding, her mother revealed that her partner had a son, three years older than her. It was a shock, but she accepted it, relieved that the son seemed comfortable with their marriage. Everything seemed set for a new chapter, but fate had other plans. On her way to the church, her mother was involved in an accident and tragically passed away. Her would-be stepfather consoled her in the wake of the tragedy, assuring her that, no matter what happened, they were already family. With no other relatives willing to take her in, she had no choice but to live with her stepfather and his son. She hoped for a peaceful life with them, but as soon as she met her stepbrother, she had a feeling that trouble was inevitable. And her instincts were right. Trouble was an understatement. The man was danger itself—one who showed his fangs and knew how to bite.

Chapter 1
Everything happened in an instant. Cassandra stood at the edge of her mother’s memorial, a soft tremor in her hands as she clutched the delicate bouquet of white lilies. The weight of the moment seemed to press down on her chest, but more suffocating than the sorrow was the cruel whisper of fate. She had thought—no, believed—she could finally feel the warmth of a complete family again. Her mother’s love had been her only refuge, her one constant. But fate, it seemed, had other plans. Her mother, the woman who had poured everything into Cassandra, was now gone. And just like that, the dream of a whole family crumbled into a broken pile of impossible wishes. A voice, venomous and sneering, cut through her reverie. “It seems even fate is against her happiness. What do you expect from a woman who doesn't even know who fathered her child?” The words stung like salt in an open wound, but Cassandra’s gaze was as sharp as a blade as she turned toward the speaker. Her eyes locked with her distant aunt’s, who, with a smug expression, tried to hide her insult behind the fluttering of a delicate fan. But Cassandra saw the mockery in her eyes, the derision veiled in false sympathy. The murmurs grew louder, each whisper more cutting than the last. Even here, in the sacred space where her mother was being mourned, there was no escape from the judgment. No escape from the cruelty of people who refused to understand. She felt the weight of their scrutiny as if it were a physical force pressing on her chest. Her mother was gone, and with her, any hope of defending the life they had built together. If only she had gone with her mother to church that day. If only she hadn’t come back early. Then, perhaps, she wouldn’t have to hear their endless chattering, their judgment. The regret clawed at her, but there was no way to undo it. A warm hand landed on her shoulder, pulling her from her spiraling thoughts. The touch was familiar, grounding, and for a moment, it felt like the presence of her mother, even though she knew it wasn’t. Cassandra looked up, her eyes meeting those of her uncle, Alex. His face was drawn with exhaustion, dark circles under his eyes from sleepless nights. Yet, despite his weariness, he carried himself with an elegance that had always made him the center of attention—both loved and admired. He had always been a presence that captivated people, including her mother. “Uncle…” she whispered, a sad smile tugging at her lips. He nodded in acknowledgment, his eyes drifting to the photograph of her mother, displayed with the brightest smile on the wall behind her. His voice trembled slightly as he spoke. “She went far too soon.” There were no tears in his eyes, but the cracks in his voice betrayed the depth of his grief. Cassandra felt a pang of sympathy for him. He had been her mother’s partner in life, and now, he too was left to mourn her absence. But more than anything, Cassandra felt an overwhelming sense of loneliness. She was now utterly alone. “Why did she have to leave so soon?” she thought bitterly. Her mother had been the only one who truly understood her. Now, all she had was an aching emptiness and an uncertain future. Just as the room seemed to grow unbearably heavy with sorrow, a sudden shift in the air made her pause. It was as if the tension in the room had been broken by a cool, refreshing breeze, though no window was open. Cassandra’s breath caught in her throat, sensing that something—or someone—was drawing near. She didn’t have time to process it fully before a rough, chilling voice broke the silence. “Dad... is that her?” The voice was low, smooth like velvet, and yet it held a certain sharpness. “My little sister, I mean…” Cassandra’s eyes snapped to the source of the voice, her heart skipping a beat. She almost gasped at what she saw. The man who stood before her was... mesmerizing. His blue eyes, bright and intense, seemed to pierce through her, as if he could see right into her soul. His gaze held a strange, mysterious depth—one that both drew her in and made her want to retreat. His appearance was striking, almost ethereal, as though he had stepped out of another world altogether. It was impossible to look away. Her mind struggled to comprehend who he was, and she heard her uncle’s voice, soft but steady, beside her. “Yes, this is her. Cassandra, this is my son, Arziah.” Arziah. The name itself sounded like an enigma, something foreign yet somehow familiar. He extended his hand toward her, and she found herself momentarily frozen. When their hands met, an electric tingle coursed through her skin. It was so unexpected, so intense, that it left her momentarily breathless. Was this how she was supposed to feel toward her stepbrother? But that sensation lingered, clinging to her even as she tried to pull her hand away. His smile was charming, but there was something unsettling about it. It wasn’t kind or comforting. There was a certain coldness behind his grin, something that hinted at a deeper, darker side to him that she couldn’t quite place. Her heart raced for reasons she couldn’t explain, and she managed to force a polite smile in return. “Thank you for coming, brother.” At her words, something flickered in Arziah’s eyes—something dark and unreadable. The air seemed to shift once more, becoming thick with an unspoken tension. He didn’t respond immediately but instead gave her a long, lingering look that seemed to weigh her very soul. Then, with a nonchalant tap on his father’s shoulder, Arziah turned and walked away without another word. Cassandra stood in stunned silence, confusion washing over her. Had she said something wrong? Was it the word brother that had triggered his reaction? Her mind swirled with questions she couldn’t answer. Her uncle, sensing her discomfort, gave her an apologetic smile. “I’m sorry, Cassandra. He’s a bit eccentric,” he explained quietly, as if to ease her worry. But Cassandra couldn’t stop staring after Arziah. His retreating form was like a shadow, a puzzle she couldn’t yet solve. His eyes, his demeanor—there was something undeniably intriguing, but also… unsettling. She couldn’t put her finger on it. For the first time in a long while, Cassandra felt a strange, inexplicable connection to someone—yet also a deep wariness. She didn’t know what to make of Arziah, and that uncertainty gnawed at her.
