Chapter 8

The Alpha’s Anger The White Fang Palace did not sleep that night. After what happened in the courtyard, the entire territory seemed to be buzzing with rumors. Servants whispered. Warriors exchanged theories. Even the palace wolves appeared restless. Everyone was talking about the same thing. Summit Angel Warm. The future Luna who forced a rogue wolf into submission without shifting. An impossible feat. An unbelievable feat. A terrifying feat. And unfortunately— The center of all those rumors was currently hiding inside the library. “Maybe if I stay here long enough, everyone will forget.” Metro looked up from his book. “They won’t.” Sam sighed. “You’re supposed to comfort me.” “I don’t know how.” “That’s fair.” The servant returned to reading. The library fell silent. For approximately ten seconds. Then footsteps echoed through the room. Heavy footsteps. Familiar footsteps. Dangerous footsteps. Sam groaned. “Oh no.” Metro immediately stood. The library doors opened. Froz White Fang entered. And judging by his expression— He wasn’t here for casual conversation. The Alpha’s face was colder than usual. His blue eyes were sharp. Focused. Stormy. Metro quietly left. Traitor. Absolute traitor. The moment the doors closed behind him, silence settled between them. Sam smiled awkwardly. “Hi.” Froz folded his arms. “No.” Her smile disappeared. “What does that even mean?” “It means no.” “No to what?” “Everything.” That was somehow the most Froz answer possible. Sam rubbed her forehead. “What did I do now?” The Alpha stared. Long. Hard. Dangerously long. Then finally spoke. “What were you thinking?” The question caught her off guard. “What?” “You heard me.” His voice remained calm. Too calm. Which somehow felt worse. “You ran toward a rogue wolf.” Sam blinked. “Oh.” “Oh?” The Alpha took a step forward. “Do you have any idea how reckless that was?” His voice grew sharper. The frustration finally becoming visible. “You could have died.” The words echoed through the library. Sam stared. Surprised. Not by his anger. But by the reason behind it. For a moment, neither spoke. Then she quietly said: “But I didn’t.” That was the wrong answer. She realized it immediately. Because something flashed across Froz’s face. Not anger. Not exactly. Fear. Fear quickly hidden behind irritation. “You don’t understand.” The words came out harsher than intended. Sam’s expression softened slightly. Then something unusual happened. Instead of arguing— She listened. Froz sighed. Running a hand through his dark hair. The gesture looked oddly exhausted. “That wolf was poisoned.” “I know.” “It wasn’t thinking.” “I know.” “It would have killed you.” The room fell silent. Sam looked away. For the first time since arriving at White Fang Palace, she saw genuine emotion beneath his icy exterior. Not annoyance. Not frustration. Concern. Real concern. And somehow— That felt far more dangerous. Later that day, rumors became a bigger problem. Much bigger. Everywhere Sam went— People stared. Servants. Warriors. Guards. Everyone. The attention made her uncomfortable. Very uncomfortable. She hated being treated differently. She hated being placed on a pedestal. She hated being looked at like some kind of mystery. Which was exactly why she found herself hiding in the stables. Again. The horses didn’t ask questions. The horses didn’t gossip. The horses didn’t stare. Well— Not much. Sam brushed one of the palace horses gently. The animal nuzzled her shoulder. “There.” She smiled. “You’re normal.” “Talking to horses now?” Sam jumped. The horse looked offended. Froz stood near the stable entrance. Of course. Apparently the Moon Goddess enjoyed tormenting her. She crossed her arms. “You keep appearing out of nowhere.” “No.” “Yes.” “No.” “Yes.” The Alpha ignored her. As usual. Then his gaze landed on the horse. The animal immediately straightened. Interesting. Very interesting. Even horses respected him. Froz stepped closer. “You’re avoiding people.” Sam frowned. “What?” “You’re hiding.” She hated when he noticed things. “Maybe.” The Alpha leaned against a wooden beam. Watching her. Not judging. Just watching. The realization felt strange. Eventually Sam sighed. “I don’t like it.” “The attention?” She nodded. Everyone suddenly thought she was special. Powerful. Important. The truth was— She didn’t even understand what happened. How could she explain something she didn’t understand herself? Froz remained silent for several moments. Then quietly said: “Good.” Sam blinked. “What?” “Good.” She stared. “Can you stop saying that?” “No.” The horse snorted. As if agreeing. Traitor. That evening, Queen Rhed summoned both of them. Which immediately made Sam suspicious. Very suspicious. The Queen sat comfortably inside one of the palace lounges. Tea already prepared. Cookies already arranged. Everything looked harmless. Which meant it definitely wasn’t. The moment Sam and Froz sat down, Queen Rhed smiled. Dangerous. Very dangerous. “I have an announcement.” Froz sighed. “No.” The Queen ignored him. Sam immediately became interested. “What announcement?” The older woman looked delighted. “A festival.” The room went silent. Sam blinked. “A festival?” Queen Rhed nodded. “The Winter Moon Festival.” Sam brightened instantly. The Warm Clan had festivals all the time. She loved festivals. Food. Music. Games. People. Everything. Meanwhile— Froz looked like someone had informed him of a natural disaster. “No.” The Queen smiled. “Yes.” “No.” “Yes.” The battle began immediately. Sam watched happily. These were her favorite conversations. Eventually Queen Rhed turned toward her. “You’ll help organize it.” Sam gasped. “Really?” “Of course.” The Queen then looked toward Froz. “And so will you.” The Alpha looked personally betrayed. “Mother.” “No.” The answer came surprisingly fast. Froz stared. Sam laughed. Queen Rhed had mastered his own technique. The next few days became chaos. Absolute chaos. Festival preparation chaos. Sam loved every second of it. Froz did not. At least— That was what he claimed. In reality, he spent most of his time following Sam around and preventing disasters. Unfortunately, Sam created disasters naturally. Like breathing. Or blinking. For example— She climbed a ladder. A very tall ladder. A very unstable ladder. A very dangerous ladder. Because apparently someone needed to hang lanterns. And apparently that someone was her. Froz arrived just in time to witness it. “What are you doing?” Sam looked down. “Hanging decorations.” “No.” “What?” “No.” She frowned. “What does that mean?” “It means get down.” “I’m fine.” The ladder immediately wobbled. Froz closed his eyes. Asking the Moon Goddess for patience. Again. The ladder wobbled harder. Several servants screamed. Sam squeaked. And suddenly— She was falling. Everything happened fast. Too fast. The ladder tipped. The lanterns dropped. The servants shouted. And before Sam hit the ground— Strong arms caught her. Silence. The world stopped. For a brief moment— Neither moved. Neither spoke. Sam stared. Froz stared back. Too close. Way too close. Her heart skipped. Then another beat. Then another. Something strange settled between them. Something warm. Something dangerous. Then Froz ruined it. Naturally. “You’re an idiot.” Sam immediately pushed away. "Take it back." “No.” “I was perfectly fine.” “You fell.” “Technically.” “You were falling.” “Details.” The Alpha looked exhausted. The servants looked amused. Metro looked unsurprised. Apparently this was normal now. Later that night, snow began falling again. Soft. Gentle. Beautiful. The palace grounds glowed beneath moonlight. Sam stood alone near the gardens. Thinking. The last few days had felt strange. Different. Ever since the rogue wolf incident. Ever since Froz’s anger. Ever since she realized something. The Alpha cared. Not openly. Not dramatically. Not romantically. At least she didn’t think so. But he cared. And somehow— That mattered. A lot. Footsteps approached. She didn’t need to turn around. She already knew. Froz stopped beside her. Silent as always. The snow continued falling. Eventually Sam spoke. “Are you still angry?” The question lingered in the cold air. Froz looked toward the sky. Then answered honestly. “Yes.” She blinked. “What?” His gaze shifted toward her. “You scared me.” The words hit harder than any insult ever could. Because they were honest. Completely honest. For several seconds, Sam couldn’t speak. Neither could he. The confession seemed to surprise them both. Then she smiled softly. A real smile. Not playful. Not teasing. Just genuine. “I’m sorry.” Froz stared. The sincerity caught him off guard. Because Summit Angel Warm rarely apologized. And when she did— She meant it. The Alpha looked away first. A mistake. Because it allowed Sam to grin. “There you are.” His eyes narrowed. “What?” “The real you.” The words made something tighten inside his chest. Dangerously. Uncomfortably. Because somehow— She saw more than anyone else. More than his warriors. More than his clan. More than the entire world. And that frightened him. Far more than rogue wolves. Far more than enemies. Far more than war. Because for the first time in years— Someone was getting close enough to reach the heart he’d buried beneath ice. And despite every warning in his mind… Despite every scar from his past… Despite every reason to stay away… Froz White Fang found himself taking a step closer instead of away. The first c***k had appeared. Now it was growing. And neither of them could stop it.
