Chapter 14

The Uncontrollable Wolf “Wake up.” “No.” “Wake up.” “No.” “Summit.” “No.” A pause. Then— A bucket of snow landed directly on her face. Sam shot upright. “WHAT WAS THAT?!” The freezing cold sent her scrambling across the bed. Her blankets flew. Her pillow hit the floor. And standing beside her bed— Looking entirely too pleased with himself— Was Froz White Fang. The future Alpha calmly set down the now-empty bucket. “You were difficult to wake.” Sam stared. Then stared harder. Then pointed dramatically. “You threw snow at me!” “It worked.” “You’re insane.” “You were sleeping.” “It’s dawn!” “Exactly.” “It’s illegal to be awake at dawn.” The Alpha crossed his arms. “Get dressed.” “I hate you.” “No, you don’t.” Sam immediately froze. Because that was the exact same response he had given days ago. The annoying part? He sounded confident about it. Dangerously confident. Before she could respond— The Alpha left. Leaving her sputtering. “One day I’m getting revenge!” His voice echoed from outside. “I look forward to seeing you try.” Sam grabbed her pillow. Then threw it at the closed door. Unfortunately— The door survived. Thirty minutes later— The training grounds were once again covered in snow. The northern sky glowed with early morning light. Several warriors had already gathered. Apparently watching Sam suffer had become everyone’s favorite hobby. Traitors. Every single one of them. Metro stood nearby. Holding another clipboard. Naturally. Sam pointed toward him. “Why do you always have that thing?” Metro looked down. “I honestly don’t know anymore.” For the first time, she respected him. A little. Only a little. Meanwhile— Froz stood in the center of the field. Waiting. Patient. Terrifying. Like a wolf preparing to hunt. The moment Sam approached— Training began. Unfortunately. The first half of the morning focused on combat. Which was a disaster. An absolute disaster. Because Sam quickly discovered one important fact. Froz was unfair. Completely unfair. “Again.” Sam groaned. She picked herself up from the snow. For the seventh time. Or maybe the eighth. Possibly the fifteenth. She had lost count. “This isn’t training.” Froz raised an eyebrow. “No?” “It’s bullying.” “It isn’t.” “You threw me.” “You attacked me.” “Because you told me to!” The Alpha looked completely unbothered. “Again.” Sam narrowed her eyes. One day. One day she was absolutely pushing him into a lake. The thought gave her strength. Temporary strength. But still. Strength. She charged forward. Fast. Determined. Focused. Froz easily sidestepped. Sam flew past him. Straight into a snowbank. The warriors exploded with laughter. Metro lowered his clipboard. Possibly to hide a smile. Traitor. Absolute traitor. Hours later— Training shifted. The joking stopped. The atmosphere changed. Became serious. Because now they were moving on to the reason Froz brought her here. Her power. The mysterious force hidden inside her wolf. The power neither of them understood. Froz stood opposite her. The snow crunched beneath his boots. His expression hardened. Immediately. Sam recognized it. The Alpha was worried. Again. “Show me.” She sighed. “I don’t know how.” “Try.” “I did yesterday.” “Try again.” Sam resisted the urge to throw snow at him. Barely. Then she closed her eyes. The field became silent. The warriors stepped back. Even the wind seemed to quiet. Waiting. Watching. Sam focused inward. Searching. Looking for the strange force she had felt before. The same force that appeared during the rogue wolf attack. The same force that had made every wolf bow. At first— Nothing happened. Seconds passed. Then a minute. Still nothing. Frustration stirred. “I can’t find—” Suddenly— A pulse surged through her body. Power exploded beneath her skin. Ancient. Wild. Alive. Sam gasped. The snow around her trembled. A strange silver glow flickered across her hands. Then disappeared. Everyone froze. Including Froz. The Alpha’s eyes narrowed. “What was that?” Sam looked down. Her hands appeared normal. Completely normal. Yet she had seen it. The glow. The light. The power. “I’m not sure.” For the first time since training began— Genuine concern crossed Froz’s face. Because that definitely wasn’t normal. The rest of the morning passed in silence. Not uncomfortable silence. Thinking silence. Froz observed her carefully. Too carefully. Like he was trying to solve a puzzle. Sam noticed. Of course she noticed. Eventually she couldn’t take it anymore. “What?” The Alpha blinked. “What?” “Stop staring.” “I wasn’t.” “You were.” “No.” “Yes.” “No.” “Yes.” Metro quietly turned a page on his clipboard. Apparently this argument had become routine. The Alpha sighed. Then finally spoke. “The glow.” Sam’s smile faded. “What about it?” Froz folded his arms. “I’ve never seen anything like it.” Neither had she. And honestly— That terrified her. A little. Maybe more than a little. Because powers were supposed to make sense. Alpha powers. Beta powers. Healing abilities. Enhanced senses. Those things existed. They were known. Understood. Normal. Whatever she had? It wasn’t normal. The realization sat heavily in her chest. For a moment— The cheerful mask slipped. And Froz saw it. The fear. The uncertainty. The loneliness. The same expression she’d worn when she first arrived at White Fang. Something tightened inside him. Immediately. Unexpectedly. Dangerously. “Hey.” The word escaped before he could stop it. Sam looked up. Froz hesitated. Then continued. “We’ll figure it out.” Simple words. Nothing dramatic. Nothing poetic. Yet something about them made her chest warm. Because he said we. Not you. We. Together. The realization lingered. Long after the conversation ended. By midday— Training finally paused. Sam collapsed beneath a large pine tree. Exhausted. Completely exhausted. She was certain her legs no longer worked. Her arms didn’t feel much better. Her pride was definitely dead. Meanwhile— Froz remained standing. Looking annoyingly perfect. As usual. “How are you not tired?” The Alpha glanced down. “I train every day.” “That’s not healthy.” “It is.” “No.” “Yes.” “No.” “Yes.” Sam groaned. The conversation felt familiar now. Comfortable. Natural. Dangerously natural. Froz eventually sat beside her. Close enough that their shoulders almost touched. Almost. Neither mentioned it. The silence settled comfortably. For several moments neither spoke. Then Sam suddenly asked: “Were you always like this?” The Alpha frowned. “Like what?” “A grumpy ice wolf.” The answer came immediately. “No.” Sam blinked. That wasn’t what she expected. The Alpha stared toward the mountains. Lost somewhere in old memories. “There was a time when I laughed more.” The confession surprised both of them. Because Froz rarely spoke about himself. Almost never. Sam turned toward him. Interested. Curious. Dangerous combination. “What happened?” Silence. The wind drifted through the trees. Froz’s expression hardened slightly. Then softened again. “My father died.” The simple words carried years of pain. Years of responsibility. Years of loneliness. Sam immediately regretted teasing him. A little. Only a little. She nudged his shoulder. Gently. The Alpha looked at her. “What was that?” “A comfort nudge.” “A what?” “A comfort nudge.” “That’s not a thing.” “It is now.” For a moment— Neither moved. Then something unexpected happened. Froz laughed. Actually laughed. Not a small breath. Not half a laugh. A real laugh. Short. Deep. Genuine. Sam froze. Completely froze. Her eyes widened. Her jaw dropped. The Alpha immediately realized his mistake. Too late. Far too late. “You laughed.” “No.” “You did.” “No.” “You absolutely did.” The grin spreading across her face was blinding. Triumphant. Victorious. Annoyingly adorable. The Alpha stood. Immediately. Attempting escape. Sam jumped up. “Oh no.” “Summit.” “Oh no.” “Summit.” “You laughed.” The warriors nearby turned. Confused. Curious. Interested. The Alpha sighed. His dignity was gone. Completely gone. That evening— After training ended— Sam wandered through the palace gardens. The snow-covered paths glowed beneath moonlight. Everything felt peaceful. Quiet. Beautiful. Yet her thoughts remained tangled. The power. The glow. The training. Froz. Especially Froz. Something was changing between them. She could feel it. Every conversation felt easier. Every argument felt lighter. Every moment together felt… Important. The realization both excited and frightened her. Footsteps approached. She didn’t need to look. She already knew. “Following me again?” Froz appeared beside her. “I was walking.” “Liar.” The Alpha ignored that. A wise decision. They continued walking together. Moonlight reflected across the snow. Eventually Sam spoke. “Do you ever get scared?” The question surprised him. “Of what?” “Failing.” Silence. Then— “Every day.” Sam stopped walking. The honesty caught her off guard. Froz continued staring ahead. His expression unreadable. “When you’re responsible for others, failure matters.” The words felt heavier than usual. Because she knew he wasn’t talking only about leadership. He was talking about her. The training. The power. Protecting her. The realization settled quietly between them. Neither acknowledged it. Neither needed to. Because somehow— They both understood. Later that night— Long after the palace had fallen asleep— Froz returned to the library. Again. Ancient books covered the table. Dusty scrolls. Forgotten records. Legends. Myths. Everything connected to the symbol he discovered. Hours passed. Page after page. Nothing. Then— A passage caught his attention. His eyes narrowed. The text was damaged. Old. Barely readable. Yet one sentence remained intact. The Alpha read it twice. Then a third time. His heartbeat slowed. Because the passage described a wolf. A wolf capable of forcing submission. A wolf marked by silver light. A wolf connected to the Moon Goddess herself. And according to the ancient records— That bloodline had vanished centuries ago. Extinct. Gone. Impossible. Yet Froz had seen the silver glow with his own eyes. The book slipped slightly from his fingers. For the first time— A dangerous possibility entered his mind. What if Summit Angel Warm wasn’t simply powerful? What if she was something much more? Something the entire werewolf world had forgotten? The Alpha stared at the ancient page. While far above White Fang Territory— The moon shone brighter than usual. As though watching. Waiting. For a destiny that had already begun to awaken.
