Chapter 1
I have to get away, I have to get help I don’t know how I am going to do that, but I have to. Not just for me, for Blake too. I feel bad leaving him, but he made me leave. We knew this was the best chance of getting out of that hell hole. I don’t even want to think about what he will go through when dad gets home and realizes I am gone, gone. Gosh should I turn around? I don’t want him to hurt Blake, especially because I left. He has already hurt him enough because of me. No! I have to do this for Blake. We decided this together, he knew the risk he was taking making me me leave. I have no car or money so walking is my only option. Blake said we have some family from our mom’s side that lives... I actually have no idea, but he gave me a phone number that i’m suppose to call when I get to a phone. Who knows when that could be, I’ve been walking for at least an hour. Cutting through the woods in the back yard so there was no way of dad finding me once he went out looking. I’m hoping I got a big enough head start. Should I be running? I feel like I am being watched, but looking around I don’t see anyone. I am just being paranoid I know it. Just keep on track Kaycee stop working yourself up. I think I hear cars in the distance, could that be a main street? God I hope so. Walking faster, finally something to focus on other than my thoughts. The cars are getting louder. I can’t see anything ahead there are too many trees, but I can hear I am getting closer and closer. Ten minutes later I am standing on the side of a two lane highway in the middle of absolutely no where. There is a gas station across the street, other than that nothing but the road in front of me that looks like it leads in to nothing in either direction. Behind me are the endless trees. Behind the gas station is what looks like a crop from a farm. There are rows of higher dirt that sink down lower then high again. I haven’t seen many movies, but I remember seeing this in a movie dad had on one time. He had fallen asleep watching it and I watched the last hour. Looking from left to right making sure it was clear for me to cross, I run toward the gas station, hoping they would let me use their phone. The gas station is pretty empty there are two vehicles pumping gas, one is an older car of some sort and the other is a big lifted truck with all dark tinted windows. I walk inside straight to the register. I am sure I look like a mess I’d been walking for over an hour, I am sweating and out of breath from running across the street. “Hi, I am sorry to bother you but is it possible for me to use your phone? It’s kind of an emergency!” The older woman behind the register looks annoyed, she rolls her eyes and inhales a deep breath before replying. “Listen I’d love to help you, but I am just not aloud, you see those cameras up there?” she points to the left and right of the ceiling. There are two small round black balls that have red lights blinking from them. “My boss watches and he doesn’t like when people use the phone, I’m sorry I can’t.” she said. “Please I have no other choice, I have no phone or money and I’ve been walking-“ I feel tears rolling down my cheeks, I don’t want to cry I don’t know where those came from. I am starting to freak out, what if she won’t let me? I have no where to go, I can’t just keep walking. A smell interrupts my thoughts, it smells amazing like woodsy but musky also; it is heavenly. I hadn’t realized someone standing behind me. Waiting in line is a tall man with short brown hair that is neatly combed to one side, he has hazel eyes that are piercing holes through my eyes. We stare at each other for what seems like forever before the woman behind the register coughs returning me to reality. I can feel my face turn tomato red. I turn on my very sore heels and run out of the gas station. I've never been so embarrassed in my entire life.
