GOING ON THE RUN
Jace's P.O.V.
I am grateful for my father's indiscretions. Because of him, I am used to keeping a getaway bag under my bed. I change out of my bloody clothes and grab it.
I rush past the fresh dead body, giving it one last look. I still can't believe I killed somebody. I press all the four elevators eager to get out of here.
The entrance of my apartment building is filled with men who are easily identifiable as part of the BLACK SWANS.
I put on my hoodie and make sure to cover the best part of my face.
"What is taking the boss so long?" They are waiting for the guy lying in my living room in a pool of his own blood.
"How long does it take to kill a lawyer?" One of the guys asks, moving awfully close to me.
"Maybe he is defending himself," they all burst out, laughing at the weak attempt of lawyer humor.
"I heard the big boss wants to meet him within an hour," I slow down so I can hear.
"Who? Alex Carter?" Another one asks.
There are like ten of them, standing around. Some are leaning on the building, others on their black SUVS.
When I pulled that trigger, I had thought he was the boss of the most feared mafia group, Alex Carter.
If not, then who did I just kill?
"Let me go check on what is taking him so long?" When two of them go into the building, I hurry to my car. I need to get out of here fast.
When today started, I did not see it going this way. As I make the last turn to my mother's house, I see an ambulance rush towards the direction of my apartment.
"We need to go now," I say anxiously, putting their bags in the trunk of my car.
Both my mother and sister are giving me curious looks, but I don't have time to explain.
I drive as fast as I can. I am grateful for the silence and their restraint so far. I am sure they have a lot of questions.
But how do I tell them that I just won a case by implicating the strongest and most feared mafia group?
Not only that, but I have just killed a man who is obviously not the boss in self-defense. But still a man important enough for the whole group to retaliate.
How do I tell them that just because I couldn't lose in court, their lives are now in danger?
"JACE STOP!" Jenny, my younger sister, screams out of nowhere. I abruptly.
"What?" Both my mom and I look back at her. She raises her hand and points outside, at the side of the road.
"There is someone there," I look at where she is pointing at.
There is someone lying by the side of the road. From the car I can tell she is a woman from the way her long hair is covering her face.
I want to drive past her, but the look my sister is giving me won't let me. I sigh before opening the car door and running to her.
"Hey miss, are you okay?" She doesn't answer. I kneel before her. She is lying on her side.
I give her a nudge. She falls to her back. That is when I see the blood that is all over her white silk vest top.
I don't know what to do. With this much blood, I doubt if she is still alive, and even if she is, I doubt she will be for much longer.
I look back at the car. My sister has rolled down her window and is watching me eagerly.
I look back at the bleeding lady in front of me. "Please," she mutters beneath her breath.
I look up at her face. She is beautiful. I get up. I look at her one last time before lifting her and carrying her to the car.
I have killed one person today, I might as well save one too.
Jenny opens the backseat door and I place the stranger on my sister's lap.
I drive away with no idea of where I am going or who I just saved.
