Unguarded Love Chapter 6: The Ultimatum The sun rose slowly over Havenville. Golden light spilled across skyscrapers, luxury estates, and busy streets, but for several people in the city, there was no warmth to be found. Only uncertainty. Only fear. Only choices that could no longer be avoided. For Prince Alex Whitmore, the day began with a nightmare. He woke suddenly, breathing heavily. In the dream, he had stood at the altar waiting for Alice. Guests filled the church. The music played. Everything seemed perfect. Then Alice appeared. Not smiling. Not happy. Heartbroken. She held photographs in her trembling hands. Photographs of him and Angela. One by one she tore them apart. Then removed her engagement ring. "I trusted you." Those three words echoed through the dream. Before Alex could answer, she disappeared. Leaving him alone. Alex sat upright in bed. His heart pounded violently. For several moments he simply stared into the darkness. Because deep down, he knew the dream wasn't really a dream. It was a warning. Across town, Alice Summers stood before her bedroom mirror. She adjusted a pair of pearl earrings and tried to focus on the day ahead. Yet her mother's words continued echoing inside her mind. "Trust isn't pretending questions don't exist." The sentence refused to leave her thoughts. Alice loved Alex. There was no doubt about that. But lately, something felt different. Something felt hidden. And she was beginning to wonder if love alone was enough. Her phone buzzed. A message from Alex. Lunch today? Alice stared at the screen. Then smiled. Perhaps this was exactly what they needed. An honest conversation. A chance to clear the growing shadows between them. She quickly replied. I'd love that Meanwhile, Sandra Davis sat inside a small café near Azure River. Her hands trembled around a cup of coffee. Jason had agreed to meet her. Not immediately. Not warmly. But he had agreed. And now she waited. Nervous. Anxious. Terrified. The café door opened. Jason entered. The moment their eyes met, Sandra felt her heart tighten. He looked different. Stronger. Calmer. Still handsome. But there was a distance in his eyes that hadn't existed before. A distance she had created. Jason approached the table. "Hi." Sandra swallowed. "Hi." Neither moved. Neither smiled. Finally Jason sat down. The silence felt endless. Eventually Sandra spoke. "I'm sorry." Jason remained quiet. "I know that doesn't fix anything." Still silent. Tears began forming in Sandra's eyes. "I hurt you." Jason looked out the window. "You did." The honesty stung. Yet she deserved it. Sandra nodded. "I know." For several moments, only silence remained. Then Jason finally looked at her. "Why did you leave?" The question hit harder than she expected. Because she had asked herself the same thing countless times. "I thought I was in love." Jason's expression remained unreadable. "And now?" Sandra lowered her gaze. "Now I realize I confused excitement with love." The words hung heavily between them. Jason didn't respond immediately. When he finally spoke, his voice was calm. "That realization came too late." Sandra's tears escaped. Because she knew he was right. At noon, Alice arrived at an elegant riverside restaurant. Alex was already waiting. For a brief moment, seeing him made everything feel normal again. Familiar. Comforting. The man she had loved for three years smiled warmly. And yet... Something still felt off. After ordering lunch, conversation flowed naturally at first. Wedding plans. Family updates. Work. Safe topics. Comfortable topics. Then Alice decided to be brave. "Alex." His smile faded slightly. "Yeah?" "I need to ask you something." Immediately his stomach tightened. "What is it?" Alice hesitated. Then spoke softly. "What's going on with Angela Louis?" The question landed like thunder. Alex froze. Only for a second. But Alice noticed. A tiny hesitation. A tiny crack. And suddenly her heart sank. "Nothing." The answer came too quickly. Too rehearsed. Too perfect. Alice studied him carefully. "Then why was she in your office?" Alex forced a laugh. "Business meeting." "Really?" "Yes." Again. Too quick. Too smooth. Too practiced. Alice wanted to believe him. Desperately. Yet something inside her whispered that he wasn't telling the truth. Elsewhere in Havenville, Angela Louis sat inside her penthouse reviewing documents. The photographs lay spread across the table. Evidence. Proof. Weapons. She wasn't proud of what she planned to do. At least that's what she told herself. But pride no longer mattered. Love had become obsession. And obsession rarely follows rules. Her phone rang. Alex. Angela smiled. Then answered. "You finally called." "What do you want?" Straight to the point. No greeting. No affection. Just frustration. Angela leaned back. "I want honesty." Alex laughed bitterly. "Coming from you?" "I mean it." "You threatened me." "I gave you a choice." Alex clenched his jaw. Angela's voice softened. "When are you telling Alice?" Silence. That silence gave her the answer she needed. "You still haven't." "No." Angela closed her eyes. Then made her decision. "If you don't tell her by the end of this week..." Alex already knew what was coming. "I will." The line went dead. That evening, Alice walked beside Azure River alone. The city lights reflected beautifully across the water. Usually she loved this place. Tonight it felt different. Her conversation with Alex hadn't reassured her. If anything, it had raised more questions. For the first time in three years, she doubted him. Not because of evidence. Not because of proof. But because of instinct. And instincts can be difficult to silence. Nearby, another figure stood watching the river. Jason Wilson. Neither noticed each other. Not yet. Separated by only a short distance. Two strangers carrying similar wounds. Two lives moving steadily toward the same destination. Destiny continued arranging the pieces. Patiently. Carefully. Waiting for the perfect moment. Later that night, Sandra returned home emotionally exhausted. The meeting with Jason had brought neither closure nor reconciliation. Only truth. Painful truth. She had broken something precious. And now she had to live with the consequences. For the first time, she genuinely understood loss. Meanwhile, Daniel sat alone in his apartment. Sandra hadn't answered any of his calls. And for once, he felt worried. Not because he loved her. But because he disliked losing control. A dangerous trait hidden beneath his charming exterior. One that would soon become impossible to hide. Near midnight, Alex stood on the balcony of the Whitmore Estate. The cool night air offered little comfort. Angela had given him an ultimatum. Alice was beginning to ask questions. His lies were collapsing. And time was running out. For months he had delayed the inevitable. Now he faced a choice. Tell Alice the truth. Or let someone else do it. Neither option ended well. Far away, Alice stared at her engagement ring. Sandra cried over her mistakes. Angela prepared for battle. Jason unknowingly stood at the edge of a new chapter. And Havenville slept peacefully beneath the stars. Unaware that a storm far more destructive than rain was approaching. A storm of secrets. A storm of betrayal. A storm that would soon change every life involved. Because some truths arrive gently. Others arrive like lightning. And when this truth finally emerged... Nothing would ever be the same again.
